The sound i most try to emulate is probably Eric Langlois' on None So Vile, heavy but with all the lows (Graves Of The Fathers) and highs (break in Slit Your Guts) nice and clear.

But best bass...

All of the ways listed above are valuable, and probably the 'neatest' way of tying 2 riffs together, but if you're feeling lazy (as i frequently am), just stick a big snare roll over the end...

As for circular breathing, loads of people do it, sax players etc.
