good black metal bands
i am a newb to black metal, and id like to know a few bands, other than immortal, Old Man's Child, Rotting Christ, and the more mainstream CoF and dimmu borgir.

go ahead, laugh at my ignorance, but thats why i ask questions, to learn, that i dont listen to shitty music and get turned away from the genre.

The only one I can stand is Absu.

Agent-Orange 2004-02-19 04:56

Destroyer 666
Impaled Northern Moonforest

Nihilist 2004-02-19 05:07

Zyklon aren't that black metal.

Def 2004-02-19 05:22

bathory and destroyer I can stand but I don't like BM at all.

destroyer was gay live too :D

Darkenelf 2004-02-19 05:54

Ancient is cool!!!

Forgotten Woods is Awesome!!

Bathory sounds ok!!

Emperor is nice!!

Immortal is kinda good!!

Ancient Wargod Sucks!!

johnmansley 2004-02-19 06:44

For starting out I'd try Akercocke because they're a really good link between death metal and black metal. They have both black and death parts to their songs so should ease you into other bands such as Emperor who offer a more full blown black metal experience.

Despite liking these two bands, I can't abide black metal.

What are Absu like, Nihilist? Their name sounds kinda Egyptian so I've got an image of Nile playing black metal *froths at mouth*

Nihilist 2004-02-19 07:19

Absu.. thrashy/black metal. Unreal drummer, though. I'd advise you to check out Melechesh, if you're looking for Nile-ish black metal. Same drummer in that band too.

johnmansley 2004-02-19 07:23

Yeah I've heard of Melechesh but the reviews I've read have been differing so I'm not sure of which ones to believe. When I get a job and I'm earning millions (!) I'll just buy it anyway, I guess.

The drummer's Proscriptor, right?

Nihilist 2004-02-19 07:41

Proscriptor, correct! It's a decent album, I'd enjoy it more if I liked black metal.

Agent-Orange 2004-02-19 08:23

Aura Noir is pretty good Thrash/Black metal band, as is early Sodom.

Vargsang. :)

Raagshinnah 2004-02-19 11:13

some Ancient
Ancient Rites

Bones98 2004-02-19 11:38

Marduk are awesome because they dont use distortion on their vocals like Dimmu and cof. And they have one of the most craziest drummers. As for Immortal, UHHHH! I never liked them. Mayhem is pretty good but not quite really fast with blast beats but its a good example of what old school BM is all abot. Possesed and Bathory are one of mine and my brother's favorite old BM bands.

BestialWarrior 2004-02-19 12:33

As far as Black Metal goes..I'd have to go with:
3.The Abyss..
5.Old Man's Child.

Sankmark 2004-02-19 13:55

-Impaled Northern Moonforest!!!
-(old) Satyricon, until Nemesis Divina was pretty fucking majestic!
-Hate Forest, Black with deathvocals.
-Dawn, Melodic black
-Kvist, Melodic black
-Aurora Borealis, technic black (Nile-ish)
-Funeral Mist, "True" black
-Ondskapt, "True" black
-Thyrane, sounds like Dimmu Borgir, but better.
-Graveworm, melodic, sounds like a mixture of cof and dimmu
-1349, Frost on drums, quite fast and "true"..

metal=life 2004-02-19 16:34

Marduk is pretty brutal (check out the song Dark Endless or anything from the album PAnzer so brutal. One of the most brutal songs is Christraping Black Metal

Absu's good too, not really black though. Tara is a good album from them

Ancient Rites kick a lot of ass

xdislexicx 2004-02-19 16:56

i don't know about you guys, but i think cof is like the blink 182 of black metal.
i don't dig on much of the black metal stuff, alot of it just seems like people are trying too hard to be "evil".
i like a few black metal bands like old mans child, dimmu, and mayhem, plus a few others, but most of the scene for that shit has gone to crap in my opinion.
