String gauge for D standard
 

Anyone recommend asuitable gauge for D standard, need resonably tight tension but other than that?

Depends on what scale length you have.
For a normal strat-style-scale 25.5" I`d recommend 10-52.
LP-Style (which is 24.75") I`d take 12-54.

I think 11s are the all-around best choice for standard D. The 12s may be a bit tight.

Yeah, thanks guys. I have an S series Ibanez so it's a 25.5" scale.

Um, do you guy's have any preference to brands?? I usually use Jim Dunlop or 12-58 set's from a Aussie company called Death Wish strings when I was tuned to B standard.
Ideas??

My choice is Ernie Ball Power Slinky on my Yamaha 25.5" for E and Eb.
On my Ibanez ADC I have Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky for D, Db, C and B.

I prefer DR Heavy Bottom- sets, with .011 being the highest string and .52 the thickest.

i use rotosound pure nickel now. Cheapest strings ever, made in britain, sound really sweet. Almost the same tone as d'addario nickel plated steel, despite not having any steel in them :)

Used to use d'addarios, but they have steel in them, and i have nickel frets, so that translates to fretwear.

every time i've used ernie balls, they've gone rusty in a week. Plus theyre really loose and gooey feeling. I avoid them outright.

D'addario or Ernie Ball, however if you've got cash to spend the fucking Elixer all the way. Their acoustic strings are fucking heeaaveeennllyy, too.

Thanks heaps for the replys and the advice. I ended up going with the Jim Dunlop's 11-52, they were cheap and my priority is to save as much as I can for my new guitar, not strings! lol

I use .12s for Drop-C, but I think that for D standard .11s would probably be your best bet.

Wow. Everyone's using pretty thick gauges for D. I've got Ernie Ball Power Slinky's for the higher 6 strings of my A standard-tuned 7-strings. Right now I have a 58 for the low A, but when my local has them in, I use a 60.

way back when, when i was a little 11 year old goth kid and played marilyn manson covers (in D) I'm pretty sure I used regular ass thin strings, ernie ball super slinkies I beleive.

I use 10's in D and they feel great. They sound good too. I also find it hard playing lower gauge strings sometimes cause they feel kinda flimsy especially after using higher gauges, but I guess that's how most people feel about it. I think it gives you a heavier/thicker sound too, right?? lol...

I've been using 11s (Power Slinkys) in D standard since 2002. I've tried 10s and 12s, but I eventually settled on 11s. Anything lower than 10s in D standard seems a bit crazy to me!
