fuck that, was flipping through stations on the way home from work and they were talking about it and played some song from it, the beginning wasnt bad but i soon lost interest. i tried to listen to it without any pre-notions but it still stank

MetalThrashingMad 2008-09-11 19:52

Yeah I heard one of the new songs on the radio... I thought it was the white stripes at first. Very disappointing, as is their last 20+ years. Metallica started to suck after they ran out of Dave's ideas.

A friend of mine and me listened to a song from the new album a few days ago and immediatly afterwards checked out master of puppets live in seattly 1991 to hear how big the difference actually is. and it was really shocking to hear (and see), that it was even bigger than expected...

anyway, i think it wasn't only dave - they also got much worse, after james stopped drinking alkohol and taking drugs ;) and after kirk stopped doing cool and interesting lead parts to become more commercial

Heard a song on the radio, I couldn't tell it was Metallica until about halfway through. It sounded awful.

Then the song ended, the DJ came on and said "Amazing. So amazing."

Sigh :(

I really like a few songs off the new album. I think The Day That Never Comes is pretty fucking sweet. No it's not exactly like old Metallica, but then again they aren't what they once were. I say it sounds pretty good considering how things went after the black album...

Yeah, I think this is the best they could do at this point. I'm really suprised that I like this album as much as I do.

I heard it harkens back to their older, thrash days of good. Realistically, it's just a cheap attempt to regain their original fan base and fans of their GOOD work since their newer stuff has been so bad that even the mainstream fans have abandoned them. It's just too bad it's working. If metal fans rejected them wholesale, Metallica would be like a child stuck in a well, except nobody cares. That would be incredibly hilarious.

Interesting new scientific study may explain the decreasing quality in Metallica's material:

far_beyond_sane 2008-09-13 03:48

Instead of being a completely rancid pile of shit, it's transparently Metallica. They have a few of the structural elements back. It's also bad, lazy music. That's all the time we need to spend on it.

This is something I've been saying for years - stop caring about this ridiculous trainwreck. We live in a marvellous world full of new, exciting music. New bands spring up every day, new releases that would cut your head in two are being pressed in studios (and loungerooms, and basements). Example - I just got the latest Sea of Nectar release. Think early Opeth garnished with bits of doom metal, Green Carnation, Rush and King Crimson. A little derivative, maybe. But it's a little derivative for interesting, modern, progressive metal - play this for the uninitiated and they'd explode. And that's just what I have to hand... how many fascinating new bands have you heard in the last six months? Where is music going?

Fuck Metallica. Metal is alive and well, so why are we poisoning it talking about these groaning, ancient turds in the artistic waterpipe?

One last thing - saw video clip for Day That Never Comes. Didn't know trite came in that many flavours. Baskin Robbins would be embarrassed.

Absolutely can't argue with that. Metallica needs to get back onto alcohol and drugs, and Slayer absolutely needs to lay off off the drugs.

Edit: well actually, scratch that. No one needs those two anymore.

TruthDevoid 2008-09-13 14:32

ah fuck you. Christ Illusion was good

I personally hated this album it sounds a LITTLE better than St.anger I honestly think mettalica will never return to the metallica we know and love the guitar riffs were simple and bad the vocals were soft and didn't sound like metal at all but rather "radio rock" the lyrics and vocals of The unforgiven III sounded emo this album wasn't worth my 13 dollars

davie_gravy 2008-09-13 16:20

I think their tone on this album sounds pretty damn good too. It's thick as hell. Just really listened to the instrumental Suicide & Redemption, that song is pretty badass. Metallica was always really good at creating a melodic theme and creating music around that theme relevant to it.
