Song to play at a funeral...
The grandmother to one of my friends passed away recently. My friend want's me to play something classical acoustic guitar stuff. You know, clean and silent, just for 2-3 minutes. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what I should play?

for a funeral, mozarts requium comes to my mind first (you could take some parts from it). however, i don't know how it sounds with just one guitar...
|
probably not good for a grandma but when my brother died we played megadeth - a tout le monde.

try Martin Taylor's 'I Wish I Knew (how it would feel to be free)'
if you manage to play it with a nice, full sound and warm dynamics you might be able to jerk some tears. It'll take some time to master it, not that its very complicated, but just because you really need to try 'n catch the right feeling. this is a really fast and somewhat happy version of it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFSdZqHHRyw if you would like the mellow mp3 version just mail me |
Can't go wrong with these:
Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" Bach's "Air on a G String" John William's "Cavatina" (the one from Deer Hunter) Tomaso Albinoni's "Adagio" (aka Adagio in Sol Minore) - this one is a favourite at funerals. Do you have any ideas about what the Grandmother liked? Maybe she had some favourite classical pieces you could choose from; the family would appreciate that, I'm sure. I hope it goes well for you mate, can't be an easy gig. |
Did your friends gran have a music collection, or did anyone know her taste?
I think the most beutifull and fitting thing for this kind of situation is looking in someones music collection, listening, trying to find something that she liked or would like, and is fitting for that moment. |
i dont know alot of classical shit but you could try those three acoustic/classical pieces by dissection crimson towers/ into infinate obscurity and fethers fell

Thanks for the help guys, I played at the funeral today and it went really good, I decided to play a piece called Lilium (don't get me wrong, all your suggestions were great) and the guys liked it. Thanks for the help once again.

from final fantasy? Me and two other guys sung that one (plus piano) to accompany one guys high-school music graduation. Very atmospheric piece

The one that I played is the intro to "Elfenlied" if you've ever watched it. I don't know if that's the same as in final fantasy. |
"Burn in Hell"- The Dimmu Borgir version

yeah Elfenlied indeed, i dont know if its from FF aswell, since I have no affinity with those kind of games whatsoever :p |
Grab a bass, a fuzz pedal, and a wah. People at funerals love to hear Anesthesia ;)

Rednecks are a strange breed. Very strange. |
Every funeral I've been to (2) has had a Skynard song played at it.
oh shit... |
I'm sorry to hear that. The only thing I can think of is church songs.

That seems like it'd be quit normal. I'd have to go with the Full House theme if you haven't done it yet, Iron. |
