Falsetto?
 

I am having a hell of a time trying to understand the difference between falsetto and head voice.

Are they the same thing?

If they're NOT the same thing, which one is that classic "metal high voice"? You know, the really high power metal style?

Yeah... Personally I have a lot of trouble (I can't do it) with vibrato.

I think that's because I did straight toned choral singing...

I think falsetto is the type of shit you hear in a lot of R & B and pop, like Mariah Carey when she just goes off into her own little brief vocal improv on the last note of a passage, and it's higher pitched than her normal range.

Righteous fucking vocal range and control Jim Gillette's got. At the end when the note flutters up and down, that's vibrato, whereas falsetto is less objective because it can be more improvised with. Get it?

Falsetto isn't your regular voice, it's like voice you use to scream like a girl trying to scream as high as you can (try it).Listen to some King Diamond (i.e. Evil from Melissa - thats Mercyful Fate) and you'll hear the difference between regular voice and falsetto.

Falsetto it's an high pitched and somehow distorted voice that does not belong to the normal range of your voice, it's not a case that it means "false". It's not the one used for power metal vocals. An example of falsetto are the higher screams of Dani Filth.

At times he uses falsetto (for the high scream bits), but I think for most of the singing he is using head voice. Really fucking phenomenal head voice I might add.

I would theorize that the singer is a tenor that had probably had opera training.

How do you use your head voice then?

If you've got a mic, record a slide from your lowest note to your highest non-falsetto note.

When I did it I clearly heard what are called 'breaks', they are the transition between registers.

Head register is when the air is resonating in your head, and chest register is resonating in your chest. To get head (tee hee hee) imagine that the note is not originating from your throat, but coming from higher up around your nasal area.

so head voice is just like a regular singing voice, and falsetto is that Judas Preist/ 3 inches of blood style.

Falsetto is beyond your range, no power metal vocals are not usually falsetto, falsetto vocals are vocals that don't use the proper vocal chords.

a falsettos is usually below or above your range, but in some cases can be in between the two.

inhale vocals are generally considered falsetto vocals since they do not strike the vocal chords, or at least in the same way as you would by exhaling.


alot of crazy noise/grind bands use falsettos.

3 inches of blood yes. Judas Priest, sometimes. Rob Halford has an incredibly powerful natural voice, so his head register does go very high, but in a fair amount of tunes here and there (especially in older material) he does use a falsetto beyond his natural range.
