This tone...
Someone can help me tuning my bass to this 'crunch' tone like in this video
is that some kind of reverb effect or some tuning? please help me :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpKV0UYbPNk before the breakdown you hear it well my rig: Esp F255 Crate Bt100 amp the video is also kind of funny so have fun! :P Thanks! |
Haha, I've seen this video before, it's great.
He isn't using any 'special' tuning to get that tone, he did tune his bass to drop D...but that doesn't make a difference in tone. As you can see clearly in the video, he is using 2 Ampeg cabinets, probably Ampeg heads too. Ampeg heads are 'tube' powered (or 'valve' as they would say in England) tubes can cause some distortion when the gain is turned up, causing your final output to have a crunchy/gritty/growly/burpy tone (whatever you want to call it) However...there are some effects that can emulate the tube "burp" effect without having to buy an expensive tube head or preamp. Tell me if you want any help finding these and I'll gladly list some. ~Cheers  |
It is a distortion effect, that much I know. I'm one of a billion guitar players in the world, but I know overdrive/distortion when I hear it. I'm sure other bass players here at metaltabs will be able to provide you more info how to zero in on your desired tone.
BTW, I love this video too. Anyone notice the Megadeth parody... "*remote to the head* Wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, wenala, what do you think of that, Blawhahahahaa" |
SansAmp
Yeah... It can be effects or natural tube drive. Effects are the way to go if you don't want to lay out too much paper. One of the best effects for bass distortion is the 'SansAmp Bass Driver D.I.' made by Tech.21.NYC. Great tones.
You can read more about it here : http://www.tech21nyc.com/bassdriver.html And if you want to hear some sound samples of this unit, download these sound files (MP3's) to hear what it can do : http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/lan...nds/Bassman.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/lan...nds/DI_mike.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/lan...sounds/PJam.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/landmark_sounds/SVT.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/lan...sounds/Tool.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/lan...sounds/Warm.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/landmark_sounds/Yes.mp3 Hope you enjoy some of those sounds, if you want me to show some more products just say so and I'll list some more. Hope that helps :) ~Cheers  |

Appropriate? What do you mean by that  lol |
This pedal is somewhat cheaper and still sounds great if you don't want to drop alot of $$$ on the SansAmp. There are sound samples on this page :

Sorry to dig this up but...
About 30 seconds in the song The Striker Strikes the bass plays by himself for like 2 seconds, but with a terrrrriffic tone. Anyone know which pedal or whatever could be responsible for a tone like this one? |
I'd say, mail the band and ask.
