Tom Araya

We all know his band is awesome and his fucking voice slays(get it?),But how are his bass playing abilities?what are some examples of his best bass playing?

BassBehemoth 2007-02-13 14:52

lol. I don't think his abilities are very good. He plays with his fingers on "Show No Mercy". He does a few riffs mimicking some guitar that might be a tad bit challenging...but nothing too special.

YOUR_GOD_IS_DEAD 2007-02-13 15:06

what about my bass playing skills? ;)

hes alright, some basslines he does do fuckign badass like Necrophiliac but some bass lines he does are just

Requiem 2007-02-13 15:29

I dont think that there is one good bass player that also does vocals, except Geddy Lee.

Now that we've all proven that Requiem is an idiot..Back to the original topic!

Oh, wait..The topic was lame to begin with.

haha.

Yeah, lame topic indeed. Maybe you should look for more into half decent metal bassists..which are well...almost everyone except Tom Araya.

Yertle4 2007-02-13 18:50

What he does with his bass is perfectly fitting with Slayer's music.

aFarewelltoKings 2007-02-13 19:39

THANK YOU

He is known as the supportive bass player. He plays what is needed for the song nothing more, nothing less.Thats why hes one of my favs

Cassius 2007-02-13 20:00

Sounds to me like Yertle was saying they both suck...Could just be me though.

so youre fine with just doing the bare minimum, and not over achieving in life?
I hope you dont take yourself seriously as an aspiring musician, because you wont make it very far in the business at all with that state of mind.

just accepting the mimimum gets you a C average, which even thou can make you the president of the united states apparently. But it wont help you anywhere else. trust me.

aFarewelltoKings 2007-02-13 22:06

i dont remember saying that is how i play or view my role as a bass player.I like his style is that a sin/crime?

PST 88 2007-02-14 01:28

There's a difference between getting by in life on a C average and doing what's best for a song. A lot of bassists here think that the best thing to do would be to come up with the most exciting bassline for every song, but a lot of the time what Tom does will end up being better for the song and the band, even if it's not as great a showcase for a bassist. There's a lot to be said for doing what the song needs, and not ruining it by doing more any more than you would by doing less.

Of course, in Tom's case it seems to be a lack of talent and imagination as a musician, which can't exactly be lauded. But, at least he knows what he can do and doesn't do anything to detract from the song or band.

Indeed. On Hell Awaits his basslines (and bassplaying) is quite great, some of the riffs on Necrophiliac/Kill Again/At Dawn they Sleep... Dayumn shizzle.

sixsicsix 2007-02-14 07:36

Im not saying that you should kill yourself on every song from exhaustion.
Just push yourself.
If you're telling me that a better bassplayer wouldnt make slayer a better band as a whole than you are full of shit.
Dont take examples from lemmy and araya's bass playing, they're mediocre bassists. NEVER accept a plateau in your abilities.
