2 string or 3 strings powerchords?
Which do you prefer, and why? Or do you like to switch it up, depending?
2 string power chord: A:-5- E:-3- 3 string power chord: D:-5- A:-5- E:-3- I've always used 3, and didn't know most people used 2 until I started playing with other guitarists. I like 3 better, personally, and I find it easier for myself. I use 3 fingers rather than barring with my ring finger. |
I don't see the point of this. Surely it depends on what sound you want. It's like asking "what's your favourite note?"

i agree. i voted i switch it up sometimes. i mostly use 2 strings, but sometimes i'll use three if i want some extra sound in there. i find it easier to use 2 for really fast parts as well. |
I switch it up. When I want to go fast, i do two notes. When I go slow or medium, I usually do three.

My exact reason. 2 strings for fast stuff, 3 strings for a more full bodied power chord. |
oh goddammed, what kinda fuckign shit is this now???
dont you fucking have something better to do than bring kinda lame shit up. i wish i was a mod, id ban the shit out of peeple like this right away... if they'd allow me |
I voted switch it up. I use each type depending on the type of sound or speed i am trying to achieve.

3 string sounds more poppy, but also adds more grit to the distortion. 2 string sounds dead. This is a stupid fucking thread. I rhymed :)
|
I'll play 2 notes when I'm playing something fast, and 3 notes when it's not so fast.
I use my pinky finger to get the 5th and octave notes fretted. On any power chords where I'm playing a power chord on the 5th string, using the pinkey is convenient in case I want to hit the major 3rd on the 2nd string. |

you should do that all the time :p |
depends on what kind of feel i want. if i'm playing fast palm muted, heavy stuff its always gonna be 2 strings. but anything strummed its going to be 3 strings
|
Wtf?
Well, for palm muted shit, 2 string all the way for the lower chunk, but for rythm and cool rock and power metal it's gotta be 3 strings to give it that nice ring imo. I actually always finger a 3 string PC even if I just play the bottom two strings, I find it easier for some reason. |
4 strings. What a shit thread! :uzi:
|
2 most of the time...just learned that way...i think the funniest power chord is the "super" power chord...or at least that is what I call it.
Code:
that stuff cracks me up... yeah... |
I can't beleive no one has mentioned that if there are not at least three tones played simultaneously, then it is not a "chord" at all...
|
Yeah, good point it's technically a diad innit?
|
Or just an interval.
Try four note powerchords ... In a drop tuning you can get five, and it sounds enormous. |

oh man... i love that. PERFECT for droning stuff... works really well if you tune your guitar like Strapping Young Lad [(G)CGCGCE] you can just bar an entire fret and drone. |
Why is this considered a shit thread? Geeze :P
|
Kinda pointless thread, but anyways, i usually use 2 notes. i use 3 if i wan the chord to stand out more
