Sweep Picking Technique?

This isnlt a HOW DO I DO It, thread, or i would of searched for it.

I know you gotta do it alternate picking...

but i play it best downstroke, i can do it shit fast with a downstroke, it sounds the same, is that still sweeppicking?

morbid_death 2002-10-01 02:32

if you go TOO fast down it will loose the whole feel and would be nothing more than strumming a bunch of notes.

but ye, and can still be considered sweeping without the upstroke, but without the up your losing a whole lot of future possibilities, doing different note shapes/combinations on the way up (little different from wat you did on the way down) adds a really nice feel and being able to go down AND up is the key to being able to master the art of sweeping arpeggios.

CtHuLhU DaWn 2002-10-01 16:10

Well the point is, Not being a showoff, but i am Rather fast, and i can cope with "accept/Dimmu boprgir - metal heart" all downstrokes (the solo), i was wondering if it was the same, thats all

morbid_death 2002-10-02 00:10

but you have to remember, lots of sweeping arpeggios and solo's are played differently on the way up, therefore, NO, its not the same if you constantly play it down.

eg; (sweeping minor arpeggio with a veriation on way back)

----------------8h12p8------------------
------------10-----------10--------------
---------9--------------------11---------
-----10--------------------------10-----
-12-----------------------------------10
-------------------------------------------

now, are you trying to tell me you would play that:

----------------8h12p8------------------
------------10-------------------------10
---------9-------------------------11----
-----10-----------------------10---------
-12-----------------------10-------------
-------------------------------------------

?????????????????????????????????

if so, yes, its still sweeping...but, its WRONG! it does NOT sound the same

upstrokes take practice....but trust me, when you get them as good as your down you can pull off some killer arpeggios ;)

i'm sort of having trouble understanding your question.......but one thing i definatly dont understand is....why there hell dont you learn to do upstrokes?!!??!!?

No you dont, the whole idea of sweeping is so you DONT have to alternate pick across strings

this makes no sense to me, you really got to tab the part you wanna play, because unless you are sweeping the pick across 2 or more strings you arent sweep picking.

Becker, on the first 2 quotes...

EH?!
Explain...

2nd...

I meant Like Up on the D, Down on the G, Up on the B etc...

Morbid, you missed my point too...

I MEANT.... when i head up i still use down strokes, Look at first example you posted, i'd do the entire thing on down strokes, 2nd one, i dont do..

ALL I WANT TO FUCKING KNOW!

is it still sweeppicking if you downpick EVERY NOTE (on the way down (up in pitch), i.e D - G - B - E, then downpick going E, B, G, D, As your meant to Up, then down, then up, then down, etc, i wanna know iof its still sweeping if you just downpiack everynote

Becker rules 2002-10-02 17:05

NO. to sweep you have to sweep the entire passage in 1 movement, now if your playing downstrokes on the way up, you arent sweeping, sweeping is going across the strings in 1 pickstroke, e.g. you do 1 long strum and play 12 notes. To sweep you have to use 1 downstroke for notes going from low e to high e and 1 upstroke going from high e to low e. Six notes in each direction with 1 pick stroke. The idea of sweeping is so you dont have to continuosly pick each note, when you sweep you get 12 notes for 1 pickstroke.

morbid_death 2002-10-03 02:10

ahhhhhhhh now i understand the question.

no, if you single pick/downstroke each note on the way up, that is NOT sweeping.

Right man, thanks, thats all i needed to know

Pablo 2002-10-03 20:16

I'm completely sure this is a sweep

mrweijia 2002-10-05 14:26

is it possible to sweep this?

yeah but what alotta ppl dont realise is those 5 Ds have to be done in one big downstroke rather then 5 seperate downstrokes, and the 3 U's have to be done in 1 upstroke.

yes.

mrweijia 2002-10-05 23:18

how? whats the fingering?

morbid_death 2002-10-05 23:46

it'd be a little tough because as you go to the next string you would have to release one 12 and head to another trying not to let them ring

mrweijia 2002-10-06 00:07

it'd be pretty hard because of the one finger moving and pressing, then moving and releasing.

Squall 2002-10-06 00:36

no no no...with one finger will be a torture...almost unhuman....the thing is that u can do it withone finger used as bar....but when u play a note and then the next one, the last note musnt be sounding, so, it doesnt have to sound as a chord, thats the point of sweeping.....to make each note sound separetly...and thats a big deal//

morbid_death 2002-10-06 03:44

you could roll your entire finger, i spent the last 10mins trying and its not that hard.

mrweijia 2002-10-06 10:46

oh, ok. i guess. but you must have some flexible fingers.

morbid_death 2002-10-06 12:35

no, it hurts like hell, they cramp up after about 10-15seconds of doing that :D not to mentioned hearing the bones crack in your knuckles as they roll over the string:) :D
