Re: Thread Search
most of you will remember my idea that stopped the horrendous flow of nu-metal tabs, in which a certain band name is typed, the submitter is re-directed to the FAQ.
well, i am hoping to implement a similar idea for old threads. having just replied to possibly the 20th melodic metal thread since i came here in 1/04, perhaps we could implement a similar feature whereby it matches threads that haven't been closed, and the newb is re-directed to that thread to either ask his or her question, or look up a response, and come away more knowledgable. just a thought. |
thats a good idea. most people stay away from the search button, but this way, they can be just directed to the older thread.
|
yup. opeth is the other main offender, great band, but too many threads.
|
Not a bad idea but I'm not sure whether this could be implemented easily.
|
yea sounds like this coudl be a bitch, however new threads of older ones arnt that bad. i agree it gets fucking annoying to have 5 opeth threads within the first two pages. however if the thread hasnt been around for a while and got locked (say due to getting off topic) then with the new members they could have something valuble to put forth if/when the topic is re-introduced

Doesn't it show up a warning if you try to make a thread with the same name as a pervious one?
|
i dont think it does

nope. that was mostly what i was suggesting, but that sounds like a much easier system to be honest. |

That is just it. But I don't mind. It isn't much work to tell the culprit to search next time, then close the thread. |
if it can be used for nu-metal tabs, then cant the same be used for repititive threads? i dont think it cant be implemented...cuz again, its just a database search.
|
Its most likely way to much work... and new threads keep this forum alive, yes they are annoying, but its just something we have to get used to.

The way that the auto-rejection thing works (i think) is nomad has some kind of external stable text type file that the imput scans through and if a match is found, then its rejected. What this suggestion would require is searching through all the static thread names to find a match. This is difficult as acording to computers the following are all different things (if case sensitive, i don't know much about vBuliten, but most programming things are) Opeth opeth OPETH OpEtH oPeTh OPETH!!!!111OMG LOLZ!!!111one My porgramming skills are probably not quite up to the level that nomad's are, but from what i can tell, for the most part it would be difficult to filter these without the use of some wildcard. So you would have to use some kind of wild card. So fo instance somebody wants to make another thread about 'Death'. They put this in, and it does a wild card search for anything like 'Death'. This could be rejected because it finds any of the following thread titles: Napalm Death - New album Favourite Death Metal Album Best Death Metal Vocalists Death to Nu-metal Im not saying that it *can't* be done, but think of poor nomad, who publishes this site as a hobby! |
Exactly, he seems to have a hard enough time adding the new tabs to the site.. Im sure he has better things to do than implement this idea.
