another Q from a non-drummer
i saw this guy playing the other day, and he hit the crash then after the did that he kinda faned it with his hand near the bell part of it, what does that do?
|
faned it, do you mean like move his hand up and down real fast next to it?
cause I have NEVER heard seen or otherwise anyone do that. unless it is some cool new technique but yeah, if you could describe it a bit more I might be able to help. |
maybe he had an itch in his hand :)
I dunno, I've seen drummers mute the cymbals with their hands too but that was just weird. |

yea thats what he did, like if your hot and you fan yourself with your hand |
Maybe it smelled funny... or he did and he tried to make it look like it was the cymbal. :stoned: :D
|
Maybe he thought is would sustain the symbol ring or something?
|
well next time I practice (and no one is looking) I will try doing this and see if it dose anythig, it could be that he hit his hand and it hurt....
not that I have EVER hit my hand.... |
What? My face has a couple of stick bruises. When he "fanned" it, was he touching it or not? Maybe he just choked it that way.
|
nah he wasnt choking it cause the symbol didnt "die out" maybe he was trying to get a "wavy" effect to it?
|
how many drummers here are good at playing/transcribing/understanding meshuggah songs?
|

my best bet. |

a bit OT... |
he might have been trying to do the doppler effect thing...the pitch bends when your hand gets closer to the bell, kind of like the sound a horn makes from a speeding car as its approaching you.
|
I think you may be talking about when you hit the crash a repeated amount of times to make the sound last a long time. I have no idea what its called though.
|
you mean a cymbal roll?
well if he was trying to do that, he would be hitting it with his sticks. |
