FTP Instructions

This document is specifically written to apply to Nihilist's FTP, access can be granted by contacting him. The document is also written fo use with the program LeapFTP. This can be downloaded from the following website: www.leapware.com/download.htrml.
The following is the information needed to register the program:

This is written based around the idea of using a home PC, rather than a school or a library one, in which case different steps to insure the privacy of the FTP will need to be taken. The example page is also not using any specific FTP site, with any luck it will be updated in the future to adequately reflect the use of the FTP site in question. It was also rushed towards the end as I foresaw the FTP being completed while I was away for a couple of days, and I wanted to have this complete when the FTP became available. I encourage feedback, ANY issues to do with use of this document should be e-mailed to me, the_yurtle@hotmail.com and I will endeavor to respond within 24 hours.

Getting Started

An FTP program (e.g. LeapFTP) is like like using Internet Explorer to access a website, where LeapFTP is similar to internet explorer, and the website is similar to the FTP, you can look at the site, and put stuff on it, but you cant do that unless you have the right program, when Nihilist gets to it, he will be giving out the site address and the user access (a user account so people have their own access) that will be used to access it. You will need to have your own copy of a program that you use to utilise thse things (like you use Internet Explorer to access the web).

To start using FTP, you will need to download LeapFTP from the website above. Once this is done install the program and register it using the information above. Once installed, you should see the following screen.

This is a screenshot of what you will fisrt see when you start LeapFTP. As you can see, i have also labeled the four primary areas, which i will now explain.

1. Your Computer
This shows your computer and it's files. When the program is run, this will always default to the directory on which you installed leapFTP. This can be navigated using the drop down menu at the top of this section, as well as using the up arrow to go to the previous directory, and double clicking on folders to access that folder. You do not need to connect to anything to try this, so i recomend playing with it, in order to become comfortable with this type of navigation.
2. FTP Site.
FTP sites are basically hard drives on other computers that you can access, and thus they are navigated in a similar way to which you ill navigate your own computer. Things are located in folders and you need to open those folders to access them. To specifically navigate these folders on the FTP you do this in the same way you navigate folders in the "Your Computer" section.
3. Transfer Que
This section holds the files that are queued up for transfer, either from your computer to the FTP, or from the FTP to your computer.
4. Status Log
This shows what you have been doing, things like connection and trasfer history. You shouldn't need to worry about this, unless you are contacting someone with a problem, at which time you might be asked to read what this says. You can also cut and paste it into a text file or e-mail to send to somebody.

Doing Something

By now you are probably thinking, "enough of this shit, I want to upload me some good files". Well first thing you will need to do is set up a connection with the FTP. I feel that the best way to do this is to permenantly save the addresss into the program (somewhat like an e-mail address book). This is done using the "Site Manager". This is done by pressing F4, or going to Sites->Site Manager in the menu at the top. This will bring up the following screen:

At this point hit the Add site button, this will bring up a new window prompting a site name, in this window you will be required to enter a name that the program will refer to the site to, an appropriate name might be MetalFTP.
This will make a profile for the site, that will be in the list on the left, above MIT. Click on this.
All the details on the right will be blank at this point. First enter the address supplied by Nihilist, then unclick the Anonymous box. This will activate the Username and password section. It is recommended that if you are using a public computer (i.e. one shared by your family) that you only supply the username (unclick the save password, and then enter it), if this is done, you will be asked for the password each time a connection attempt is made. Then click connect.
If these steps were followed correctly, the box in the bottom right should be moving showing that you are connecting to the FTP.

The Following sections will contain explanations on Downloading and Uploading, however i have yet to finish these sections, and will complete them specific to where things will be located once the FTP is done.

Thank yous go out to: Nihilist, for providing the FTP, guitar_demon, as questions help with everything and Nomad for multiple things that are way too numerous to mension.
