it depends on the style of Black Metal. i mean there is a distinc difference between Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor and Cradle Of Filth (yes i would argue they are a BM band at heart).

personally for symphonic Black Metal i would say Emperor - Into The Infinity Of Thoughts

for the rawer style of BM i would have to go for Darkthrone - Kathaarian Life Code (will someone PLEASE tab this?)

Cradle of Filth are still as underground as fuck, fellas. They are just so damn awesome, that they get more recognition. So that has what to do with them sounding as "black metal" as any band? I don't see a connection. They didn't stop playing black metal. Their albums are the same. Some just have a little more guitar in them.

I think From the Cradle is still pretty black. Not as black as dusk... but still. And Midian is more or less black. BSTS, however, is not black at all, but pop(well, maybe not pop, but not black). That last album does kinda reek of "ooh i'm so famous, that whatever the fuck i do, everyone will like it". I just hope they'll lose that attitude.

also i don't think From The Cradle To Enslave is black because the title track is as mainstream as they've got. also Perverts Church is shite. Aside from that EP i love everything COF have done. Midian was a masterpiece and Bitter Suites material wise was alright but it was regurgitated old material that should have been left untouched (especially Black Goddess which now unfortunately sucks).
