You can't get them until 2004, but you can win a pair of the Vans Slayer Old Skools. Check out the shoes, enter the contest, watch some video and leave your name to be the first to get your hands on them."

...and thus ends slayer's reign as the only big 4 metal band that stayed true...

It's sad......maybe it has something to do with getting older. Or maybe it's just King's fault, who knows.

But like Dead, i will most likely still go see them in concert. One thing's for sure......the energy at Slayer concerts is unsurpassed.

Did the band have anything to do with it?
I mean, it seems like it wouldn't be any different from selling a tee shirt or something. But the whole idea of them making shoes is just pretty lame to begin with.....

I dont know, I dont think its that big of a deal. Oh well.

memnoch
2003-12-28, 22:10
You do have a point, but the band had to "ok" the whole deal. So all in all it's still all Slayer's responsability.

Gigantic Penis
2003-12-28, 22:17
Eh, you guys are making too big of a deal. So what? If I was in a poular band like Slayer, I would think it is cool to have a shoe. I mean, don't get me wrong, those are ugly shoes, but it would still be cool for a band, after making how many different shirts, to get something new.

Bands start with shirts, then move on to hooded sweatshirts, or maybe jerseys (personal opinion: I think band jerseys are retarded). After that, it's just another interesting piece of band paraphanalia.

Megadeth had a comic book deal, several bands have had action figures. Slayer has a shoe.

Look at it this way: Slayer are getting the metal name out there. If they have to do it with a pair of nasty ass shoes, then so be it. I wont stop in their way.

An (ex)extreme band getting advertising that way. Shit, i would do it in a heartbeat, and so would every one of you assholes. You dont have to admit it, but dont deny its good advertising.

i don't think this is selling out at all. I always want more merchandise from my favorite bands, and if slayer was my favorite band i'd be ecstatic (example, i want a Dream Theater coffee mug....i'm dead serious).

the shoes aren't that bad looking....

i'm not too knowledgeable about Slayer, but how does endorsing slayer shoes make them sell out?
how is this different than band shirts, hoodies, etc?

Selling out is when you compromise your music for the sake of money, how does the shoes affect the music?

There isn't anything wrong with getting your name out there, but how you get your name out there. How can one be proud of a shoe unless your are a participant in something that usess shoes (i.e. Michael Jordan). This shoe is just another weasly way to suck out an extra 40 bucks (probably more) out of his fans. Its music; not basketball, football, or volleyball. Pathedic.

FearFrost
2003-12-31, 20:56
Someone on this site said it about the boxset, and the same still goes for the shoes, "only a true die hard fan would buy it, or someone new to them would". Think about it, if some guy (or girl) who has EVERY THING Slayer, would buy it to say the have it all, or some little Slipknot kid would think its evil to own a pair.

But there is a Kery King clothing line comming out so if you want to point a finger at someone its him, but hell he was the one started the band, so he can kill it off if he wants to.

by that logic, you could say that band-shirts don't get used in music. Often bands play live without wearing any shirts at all.
how do you respond to that Mr. darko?

and how can one be proud of it? well they're the first real metal band to do this (to my knowledge)

I bealive you misunderstood my post. Band shirts do get used in music but it dosen't inhance the music at all, same with shoes. But the shoe dosen't make you a better skater, fan, or metalhead. Although the same thing goes with shirts. But along with Shirts, Necklaces, Patches, Stickers, Sweaters, glasses, CDs, DVDs, Box Sets, and a new clothing line.. A shoe isn't very important. I didn't say that Slayer sold out for making a shoe, I said that they are trying to make more money.

I was incorrect on the proud statement, anyone can feel proud. I could be the first guitarist to make a T.V. and be proud of it.

which band isn't, though?
bands have bills to pay too.

perhaps other metal bands haven't tried this before, because they probably weren't able to get a respectable shoe brand to actually go along with it.
and since Slayer is able to, imo, more power to them.

bands and bandmembers aren't as closeminded to ideas as you think they should be.
example, Kerry King appeared in the Sum 41 video, and he had a fun time, he didn't care about what people thought about him jamming with a pop-punk band.
i'd say it makes him MORE of a bad-ass.

Now I agree with that a lot, but still they are not sell outs.

You can say what you what about what is a music product and what isn't (sports players endorsing shoes, and bands endorsing guitars, etc.), but Slayer, like many other metal bands, have $75 hooded sweatshirts, and jerseys that I've seen for almost $100. A shoe isn't that big of a deal. It is just more band apparal. Not that big of a deal.

On a side note, if my band ever gets successful, I'm gonna endorse totally unrelated products if I can, like engine oil, shaving cream and oven mits.

I'll only do it for like a month, I'd sign really short term deals, then in 1-2 years, there would be all sorts of discontinued band shit out there.

Before i knew shit about anything metal-related, when i first heard Slayer, Jeff immediately became my guitar-God. I didn't have any knowledge of their history, or who wrote which song.......but Jeff just looked way "cooler".

When i see king in videos, whether it's Raining Blood/Black Magic from the early 90's, or just recently at a show, he gives me a "show off-y" vibe. He seems to want to look the angriest, evil-est guy out there. While on the other hand, i look over at Jeff (and Araya too) who are both just having a blast doing what they love.

I could even go as far as comparing King to Ulrich. (please don't start an argument about THAT band) I mean, King is far more talented, but he seems just as money-hungry and wants just as much popularity.

I don't think we'd ever in our lifetimes catch Jeff appearing in a 10-second solo clip (which by the way SUCKED FUCKING CUNT ASS) for some pop-punk band that's barely out of their teens. And by the way, Jeff also wrote most of "Diabolus in Musica" and personally i think that album rules. King wrote most of GHUA and it's nu-metal trash.

I'm a huge Slayer fan. I've followed them since i was 14 years old, i have bought every studio album except the punk-one (for obvious reasons). GHUA was a big disappointment, and since it's release i've been weary of new things Slayer. This shoe is another point which i view as the "Downfall of Slayer". It's a point in life i never wanted to witness, and hopefully they can redeem themselves with a brilliant release (which will hopefully be written by Jeff)....otherwise we will inevitably face Slayer as sell-outs.

I don't think they are just yet.....but if things continue the way they have for the past 2 years, then it will come.

Slayer have been around for a long time & the name of metal has been tainted by new school homobands. It was only a matter of time until a marketing agent sunk his teeth into such a classic musical behemoth.

Their not total cunts, they're just getting old & starting to think about how their going to pay for whiplash treatment throughout their twilight years. They may be Slayer, but they're still humans & they can't go on forever.

Blame Vans & the inhuman pipe-weasel that sold them this shitty idea in the first place, THEN blame Slayer.

Exactly, like in that lame Sum 41 video, He coems out and everyones like OMFG!!! HES BADASS!! and hes hailed as a king (pun intended) just so he can play sum weak 5 sec solo. HIS FUCKIN ENTRANCE IS LONGER THAN THE SOLO! As for GHUA it was a nice angry album i guess, but there was NO technicality and the satanic imagry and lyrics (sung by a christian i might add) was a lame ass atempt to impress rebelious 14 year olds that also like to listen to sum41. But this new record should be better, DAVES BACK!

Yes King is much more technicaly adavnced than Jeff and is more 'professional' live in that he nails everything perfect where Jeff usualy messes up a solo or two (drinky drinky?). But Jeff is a majorly better songwriter.

I also head about the Kerry King clothing line and I thought it was stupid because to me, his fashion sense is awful. I mean, he's in a fucking thrash metal band and wear stupid ass jersies and a pair of glasses trying to be like Heavy D. And when you look at Jeff, his fashion sense is all thrash, I have never seen him wearing those dumbass basketball jersies, hes always keeping it thrash-like.
