Opeth are without a shadow of a doubt thé most innovative and great band that I have heard up until now. although I seriously doubt whether any other band will be able to dethrone them. personal fav is 'my arms your hearse', but love the other albums as well.

i'll put it simply...
Fave all time band: Opeth
Fave all time album: Morningrise
Fave all time song: Black Rose Immortal.
Spectacular. Exquisite musicianship! One of the tightest bands I've seen.

i had always considered Opeth as exquisite musicians until i sat down to learn Black Rose Immortal ..... it sounds complicated but its really quite simple! This isn't a bad thing. They can capture a persons attention for 20 mins in one song and still leave them wanting more without being overly flashy. They can change moods and an atmosphere as good as any classical composer using much less tools. If any other band wrote songs as long as Black Rose Immortal i'd be bored shitless (yes even Edge Of Sanity's Crimson can bore me in parts). It is these facts that make Opeth musical geniouses.

So true, and I must say, the songs with the soft vocals still kick alot of ass, like Harvest.

I need to get more of their shit....

wise words. but must wait, because i'm skinned right now. curses!
i think the songs that show a lot of interaction between vocals give opeth that extra dimension. and not only can michael sing good, he's also got a grunt that makes me jealous. wish i could hurl like him.

What can I say about Opeth?
Amazing tone, amazing song structuring, amazing vocals, and hell, everything else.
Still Life is my favorite (though I've only heard Morningrise, Still Life, and BWP) album, "Serenity Painted Death" is my favorite song of theirs, (maybe, I suck at picking favorite songs :P), as far as I'm concerned they're the best band still going (well, they're tied with Nevermore).
I agree totally!!!
1. still life (although I think "face of belinda is my fave song)
2. black waterpark
3. morningrise
4. my arms.........
5. orchid
thats my personal ratings!!!
I was luckey enogh to see them live last summer.
of course I was nervous about how they would manage with all the changes to
acoustic ect. but they sounded just like the recorded versions´...
well maybe a little more dark hehe
i don't get what's the fuss is about... Opeth is allright, but they're not super-duper-shit-melting-great. I mean, i just can't see what's so good about em

This will probably be ignored as usual when I dig up old threads but eh.
Producer ANDY SNEAP In Talks To Mix New OPETH CD - July 16, 2002
Acclaimed producer Andy Sneap has been in discussions with OPETH about mixing the group's forthcoming two CDs, which they're scheduled to begin recording at Nacksving/Maestro Music studios on July 22nd with producer Fredrik Nordström.
As previously reported, OPETH are planning on issuing two separate CDs at the same time—one heavy, one mellow. The heavy CD will be typical OPETH with all its ingredients, including mellow parts, while the "mellow" CD will have more laid-back material. A late 2002 or early 2003 release is expected.

OPETH Set Release Date For Fothcoming CD
OPETH's as-yet-untitled new album, which is currently being recorded at Nacksving/Maestro Music studios with producer Fredrik Nordström, is scheduled for a worldwide release on October 28th, with an extensive tour to follow.
As previously reported, OPETH are planning on issuing two separate CDs several months apart—one heavy, one mellow. The heavy CD will be typical OPETH with all its ingredients, including mellow parts, while the "mellow" CD will have more laid-back material.
OPETH are tentatively planning on issuing the second of the new CDs on March 15th, 2003.
In other news, the limited-edition, deluxe two-CD version of OPETH's Blackwater Park CD (containing additional music and video footage not available on the original version) is now officially out of print following its release last week.

everyone always says this on this forum. i think that there are so many more innovative bands than Opeth like Type O, Dream Theater, Iced Earth at times, Bal-Sagoth and Moonspell.
G.P. has bad taste in music, i believe. All the bands you just listed sound like the shit that comes out my ass-crack. Seriously, ALL of them blow goats. Type O- sucks all 'round, Dream Theatre- sweet solos is the ONLY thing they have, the riffs and vocals and everything else sucks, Iced Earth- barely even metal at all, Bal-Sagoth- sucks all 'round, Moonspell- sucks all 'round.
Doom Metal makes me wanna vomit like a bulemic girl, it's just plain stupid, it doesn't sound dark at all, it sounds like big gay nerds who are way too into vampires and satan and all that bullshit.

ok, I love Iced Earth, Type O and Moonspell as well, but Opeth is still better.
it's good to get a discussion going at least, but let me found my opinion:
in my metal career (*grnf*) I have not yet come across a band that can integrate melody and agression into a coherent song. Opeth can. besides, they prove that you don't have to use your standard powerchords to make kickass music. besides, no one has a cool grunt like mikael akerfeldt.
iced earth is still a metalband, but let's not get started on who is more pure, because that never gets resolved.

by more pure i dont mean who is more "metal", i mean, many bands have fall into different genres:
in flames-melodic death metal
naplam death-grindcore
moonspell-goth metal
etc.
iced earth is like iron maiden, judas priest etc. back awhile ago, when there werent so many genres, those bands were just known as metal bands, or heavy metal bands. the term "heavy metal" is rarely used today. iced earth is like them, yet they do add their own innovation, with many acoustic parts, female voices etc. So to say IE is not metal is insane, they are like the old bands that are just plain metal. although by now with so many genres, all these bands fall somewhere.

That's arguable. Yes, they are very talented, but I dont dig their sound.
I used to be really into Opeth. I used to listen to them while I took psychadelic drugs and trip out on the complexity of things.
But, I soon got bored with opeth. I refuse to listen to blackwater park because I think it sucks. The only good albums in my opinion Opeth have are Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse. Why do I think this? Well, its obvious that Opeth stopped coming up with music before going into the studio after MAYH, or even perhaps before that album. The music sounds rushed and I dont like the themes of the later albums. Morningrise has the most emotion to me, but as I listen to it more the production starts to bother me, as does the guitar sound.
I saw Opeth live, they were pretty cool but I enjoy the energy of deathmetal more.

Now, topic related, Opeth's good, but honestly I thought they'd be better considering how highly they're usually talked about around here. Some of the stuff I really really like, but other songs are just "yep, a song"

walpurgis, i'm not an idiot, i just get sick when someone starts a thread about a band, with the intention to provoke positive conversation about that particular band and GP or some other asshole (even me sometimes) decides to respond negatively to the intentionally positive and productive thread. everyone was having fun talking about their fav opeth album and fav songs and why those are their particular favs and i'm about to respond with my fav opeth shit, with only constructive intentions in mind and GP has to post some bullshit about -whats all fuss about opeth?- -these bands are more talented- and then procedes to list bands that are far less talented than opeth, and i think "how 'bout you just start your own thread about these other bands instead of bothering the fans of another band and talkin shit about the band that everyone is talking positively about. so i got put out and frustrated, and just decided to throw out some random shit back, that doesn't make me an idiot, that just makes me impulsive and irrational.
and how come no one seems to be that into still life? that was the first opeth album i ever bought, and i didn't even know who opeth were at the time, i like the way the theme of the album is really accentuated, i didn't really find it that aperent in the other albums. MAYH didn't really seem to have a theme, neither did morningrise and that was the thing that first interested me, was that the album had a theme. i haven't heard BWP though and i may be mistaken about the lack of theme with the other albums.

Opeth will never even come close to Zeppelin's status. not even if they had 50 years. Why? Zeppelin is more accessible to a wider audience. Opeth has some soft songs, but they have lotsa heavy guitar riffs and low growls.
i wonder if Opeth's decision to release two albums at once is an attempt to widen themselves to a bigger audience by having a whole cd thats mellow........

This is it! Opeth, the greatest fucking metal band in history! No doubt about it. I mean, there's Iron Maiden and Testament and what not, but fuck them man! Opeth just totally ass rams all of their silly carcasses like a freaking necrophile! Everything, the composition, the perfection, the untiring songs that just leave you asking for more, Mikaels orgasm-inducing vocals, Everything! I've listened to a shitload of metal, over 600 bands man, I take Opeth over anyone, without minor hesitation.

Anyone who disrespects Opeth should be crucified upside down.

I agree, I'm not as much of an Opeth fan as I once was.....which is pretty sad considering my username:rolleyes:
St Peter disrespected Opeth, did he?
And yeah, Opeth the best? I'm gonna have to go with no.

and again, we come down to that tedious thing called 'personal preference'. Opeth are definatly my favourite band, and in my eyes they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but as far as i'm concerned there is no such thing as a greatest band!!!
one person said a few threads up, that anyone who disrespects opeth should be crucified..well, i agree with, i dont give a flying fuck if you like opeth or not, even if you hate them, they definatly are great musicians and composers.

Listening to the new album...
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:
Very hard to rate Opeth objectively, given expectations...
It's *almost* brilliant... but doesn't quite have the relentless movement and inventiveness of some of the other stuff. It's a little bit more-of-the-same'ish for the first time... I'm being too harsh. This is my favourite band and I place gigantic expectations on them to continually produce my new favourite CD... Deliverance is definately the stand-out track... DEFINATELY... perfect exposition of style...

Yep, I've dl the album from there. It's not bad, but I guess I'm just not a hardcore opeth fan like I use to be. Thrash metal will always be my favorite!:D

Wreath is definately growing on me... maybe it's a hair better than I first thought... It's a more dense sound, not necessarily heavier... definately the drum lines doing it...

The tracklist for the new opeth DVD is as follows:
01 - intro
02 - windowpane
03 - in my time of need
04 - death whispered a lullaby
05 - closure
06 - hope leaves
07 - to rid the disease
08 - ending credits
09 - harvest
10 - weakness
11 - masters apprentices
12 - the drapery falls
13 - deliverance
14 - the leper affinity
15 - a fair judgement
it doesnt seem much for just over 2 hours of playing time
and it doesnt have much in the way of older heavy stuff either, seems mainly orientated on the last 2 albums, which is a pity
it sucks that they weren't allowed to play old songs at that gig
heres what mikael had to say about it on their forum:
I know guys it's a little bit wierd this.
Reason is publishing rights...we have, I don't know 3 different publishers so it's gonna be a problem....I don't know exactly why really. We're only allowed to play songs from our MFN catalogue.
Thing is that Shepards bush is not a super excusive gig, other than it's set up for the DVD. We'll be on tour for "Damnation" playting only soft songs but for that show we'll pull out a few heavy numbers as it's "a night of Deliverance and Damnation". Basically it's done to promote the albums, not some night of ol' favourites. I totally understand what you mean and I do agree it's a little fukked up. The company have been on our backs for a DVD for a long time, but I reckon the real reason for this DVD is promotion.
Cheers
Mike
i read that they did play demon of the fall for the encore, but they stopped the cameras during that :(

Fuck publishers suck.... first Dimmu Borgir are considering re-recording Stormblast and now this disappointment of a DVD. I saw the concert posters in mags, and saw that it was being recorded for a DVD, this made me very over-fucking-joyed. But to find out that 70% of it is all their soft stuff is a huge let-down.

Opeth are God. I say that the DVD should be great, they put on a good show regardless of the situations, but nevertheless I shall buy it. My fav album so far would be Blackwater Park but I only have that one and My Armes, Youre Hearse.

'Bout a year ago, an angry bald man told me that not listening to Opeth was pretty much a capital offense & that by not doing so I was inferior both as a human & as a metal head. Well, words to that effect anyway.
He was so very fucking right. They're probably the greatest band of the last 10 years & should be global ambassadors for metal. I don't know anyone who doesn't like at least some of their stuff (& I know some fairly awful teeny-bopping tards). The last album ('Deliverance', is it called?) more-or-less shows that they're capable of doing anything dark. It's seriously moody stuff & while not exactly the heaviest or even the most exciting thing they've done, it's certainly very fucking accomplished stuff.
If my housemate likes it & it's metal then they MUST be doing something well...

I totally hear what your sayin man. Most poeple who havent heard opeth and say they suck probably argue that it isnt brutal enough. Yeah fuckin right, I woulndt consider them the most brutal or even close to the top of the list but they are still on there. They are geniuses.

yeah, but it's not their best one.... well, to get a good impressoin of Opeth you should start out with blackwater park, though there are some (not too much i would think) clean vocals (doesn't sound bad by the way)...
if you don't like that, try deliverance, but i think that if you don't like blackwater park, opeth wouldn't be your thing
