You seemed a tad vehement about your dislike towards them.
I'm a little confused on how I feel about the RIAA. On one hand, if everyone's downloading music for nothing, artists aren't going to get money, but on the bigger hand, music (along with art, literature, the water in your house, the cable on your TV, the GROUND YOU LIVE ON) should be absolutely free. Of course, this will never happen.
Property is based on theft, the idea that the first "landowners" used swords and guns instead of deeds and paper money.
I've been thinking hevily about this subject a lot lately. What the hell is the difference between a 100 dollar bill and a 1 dollar bill? They're both paper, they're just representing how much gold/precious stones/land/whatever the country has. Of course, I told my history teacher this and he said "Ok, then give me all your hundreds and I'll give you all my ones."
But thats how people think, they don't understand that all this "money" is only worth the markings people put on them. When banks make loans, they can loan up to something like 8 times what those people actually have. Where does that "money" come from? We live in a society where people either go insane/kill others/kill themselves over these tickets we call collateral.
This relates back to music being free because, with something like oil, or land, you can supposedly put "prices" on them. But with things like music or art, different things are worth different prices to different people.
We can't generalize someones emotions into the price of something. A therapist or just one CD could, and has been known to, save peoples lives. The only difference is the price.

Well whats bullshit is RIAA acually gets like 2 cents from every cd-r sold.... And they sue 7 year old kids and 76 year old men. And all this because they dont know what music to market and what price to sell it for. I no longer Buy Metal Blade CD's becuase MetalBlade is a part of riaa, yeh it sounds dumb but im not gonna give riaa mroe money so they can sue 7 year old kids, and the artist see no money from sales until after they sell about 500,000 CD's which is pretty damn hard to due, exspecially cause metal gets very little exposure. So instead of buying CD's i just goto nearly every concert that comes through here, that where the artist acually make money.

But yeah, its like, either I buy this CD I really want, and the artist gets a little money, or I download it all and burn it on to cd, and the artist gets nothing. There are actually some bigger artists that put their whole records online because they don't support the RIAA. I think REM was one of them.
But yeah, the only good way to support the bands is to buy a ticket to their show and spend your money on their merch.......Or just send them money.....

Im surprised REM was able to do that, most bands dont even own the right to there songs... yeh pretty fuckin sad. They put there hard work into the music and they dont even own it anymore. They could probably be sued for downloading their own songs lmao

It all depends on their publishing situation and the deals they agree to, you'll find that most artists who wish to retain the rights to their own songs are able to if they go the right way about it.

I really don't see the problem with the RIAA, I don't know why so many of you hate it. You get to listen to your favourite music and can buy their cd's, does it really matter if its not on the radio?

I just dont like RIAA because they blame file sharing on their losses, maybe if they marketed mroe than just the same b/s music then they would see a sales increase just maybe, and im also not in agreement with suing 7 year old kids

I could care less about the radio. I just think that conditions could be improved for musicians. I mean, I want to see the bands I like get all the respect they deserve, and for our generation to get the same, for the few that go on to be in bands.
But ultimatley.......I guess I really don't care about the RIAA.

Yeah it is a nice thought, but the reality is that companies are interested only in money, therefore they need only to market the music with the most mainstream appeal. It is called the music "business" after all.
