I think they sound too different. Obviously, when most bands get a new singer, they always say they don't want a replacement, but someone different with their own style. Owens is way to whiney. Barlow had power behind his voice.

I think it's funny how whenever Jon Shaffer writes a song title, he has the credits next to it (his name, basically).

On the back of "The Reckoning" single, was it necessary to put (Shaffer) next to every song? I'd like to see an Iced Earth album, where the only credits are at the very end of the booklet, and all it would say would be "Songs written by J. Shaffer". Instead of 'Music and Lyrics by Jon Shaffer" written 1000 times.

Oh well, I've ranted on stupid stuff for long enough.

He deserves credit. The man is getting grey hairs from writing so much. Yet these retarded artists today are singing about "da club" or "tha holiday inn" or "i like tha way u work it right thurr" and getting paid millions...the world sucks. They probobly write a hit song on their hand before a show.

The sad thing is I can see that actually happening.....

Anyways to stay on topic, I like the new Iced Earth material with Tim Owens. It still stays true to their older style and with Ripper on vocals he brings new life to the band.

When I first heard that Barlow was leaving, I was like "Shit. It's over. It's f*cking over. [Endless repeat...]". He was a truly great singer, who's voice really did fit the rest of the band. What I've heard so far of the new stuff with Ripper, is good (it's Iced Earth, duuuh!!), but it's kinda back to the old days. I never *liked* the singers before Barlow, and I really don't *like* Ripper in this type of music either, but it's certainly good enough. So, I'm not complaining, only mourning the passing of another great metal vocalist. (Yeah, I know he's not dead, but he's gone....)

The new album is pretty good, but Barlow was more fit probably. Owens, (Not Ripper, can't have that...) is an incredible singer. Some of his screams, shit, they put Halford to shame. Barlow though, was a more emotional and powerful singer, and for me at least, was and is the definitive voice for Iced Earth. The new style overall is, or so it seems to me, to be more power metal than previous efforts. That, however, is not necessarily a bad thing, as Iced Earth have always combined influences of power and thrash. If you listen to the new album, Barlow is still on it at some points. There is a moment in Gettysburg where Barlow and Owens are both singing, and that was all but orgasmic. I dig the new style, it's really epic, but my favorite album will porbably always be Burnt Offerings.
