I was just wondering what you all think of Iron Maiden. They're a HUGE influence on mostof today's metal bands. Have you listened to much of their material?? If so, do you like them?? Any favorite Maiden songs??
I love Maiden. Bruce Dickinson is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. The guitar harmonies are just perfect, too.
My favorite Maiden songs are:
5. Number of the Beast
4. Ghost of the Navigator
3. The Trooper
2. Hallowed be thy Name
1. The Evil that Men Do
I encourage anyone who hasn't heard much Maiden to check them out. "Best of the Beast" (greatest hits collection) is a great place to start. Trust me, you'll see why they have been such a huge influence, and probably hear some of the same musical elements as many of your other favorite bands.
I haven't listened to them much, but i like these songs:
Wasted years
Hallowed by thy name (although the CoF cover is better than the original)
and ummmm that's it i guess:p
The number of the beast is a good song, but it has like 2 minutes of bullshitting before the actual music, so i don't like it
I bought one of their CDs which was a tribute to some other band and it was kinda cool, too bad I gave it away to my friend or I'd be listening to it right now.
I hate my friends, soooo, I've made my life goal to be friendless.

Afraid to shoot strangers!
I've never been a real big Iron Maiden fan, but I've always loved that song.

SINCE I'M INTO METAL, iVE ALWAYS HEARD PEOPLES TALKING GOOD ABOUT THEM HOW GREAT THEY ARE AND SUCH THING....
I DECIDED TO BUY AN ALBUM ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. I WENT TO A USED CD STORE AND ASK A GUY WHO WAS LOOKING AT SOME MAIDEN'S ALBUM'S "WICH ALBUM SHOULD I GET? I'VE NEVER HEARD THEM BEFORE" HE TOLD ME TO BUY "POWERSLAVE".
I BOUGHT IT AND I'VE BEEN REALLY DISAPOINTED.
SURE THEY ARE GREAT MUSICIAN "ESPECIALLY THE GUTARIST"
BUT I REALLY DONT GET INTO THEIRS SONG'S. NOT THAT THEY ARE BAD I WOULD TAKE THAT ALBUM OVER MANY OTHER METAL BAND ALBUM. MAYBE I DIDN'T BUY THE RIGHT ALBUM TO START WITH. I THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE HEAVY METAL BUT THEY AIN'T. THEY ARE A METAL BAND BUT DEFINATELY NOT HEAVY AND I THINK THAT'S WHY I DIDN'T REALLY LIKE IT.
MAYBE ANY OF YOU CAN SUGGEST ME I BETTER ALBUM.

CAPS!! My eyes are sore!!! :bawling:
Anyway, Powerslave is a decent album... "Number of the Beast" is by far their best.
But it's important to understand that they were as heavy as HELL when those albums were released (early 80s), by music standards at the time. They're not heavy, when compared to today's music.
But overall, I think that they derserve more credit than any other metal band in history, in terms of inspiration.

Powerslave is my fave Maiden album.
They're as heavy metal as it gets. By heavy metal I mean heavy metal as in Judas Priest, Gamma Ray, Iced Earth, Manowar, Hammerfall, ... If you don't like it ,stick to thrash and death.

That's a very good point. They really can't be compared to any death/thrash metal bands, because it's a different style. I think that people have a fractured definition of "heavy metal." The only thing I could compare it to for the new metal fans is power metal.
Iron Maiden are a heavy metal band in the truest sense of the word, and they deserve every accolade ever thrown their way.

I thing Maiden are the best metal band from the 80s by a long long way, I agree that heavy metal has changed loads and too many ppl say its not heavy enough and others say its too heavy, I think the main point is if it rocks it rocks wheter its heavy or not.
My fave maiden songs.
1 - 7th son of a 7th son
2 - Hallowed be thy name
3 - Phantom of the opera
4 - Blood Brothers
5 - Killers

I don't know, It's been awhile since I truely listened to them. But the newest albums OK. It's got decent guitar stuff, but I like the really old guitar parts. Like on Killers, or Iron Maiden (Self titled) when they had the british guitar sound.

Their new stuff is awesome too.....Brave New World Rocks!
OK, Iron Maiden rocks, thats clear to almost everybody! It's going to be fun to see what DerMeister has to write in this tread, if you ask him, he can tell you Iron Maidens lifestory. The best Iron Maiden song is: Afraid to shoot strangers, or Fear of the dark. I could listend to those two songs for a fucking long time! Ghost of the Navigator is also good, and The number of the beast, The loneliness of the long distance runner, The Clansman, 2 minutes to midnight, and so on and so on.

Thanx, Nemo.
Yes, the best Maiden album must be Somewhere in Time. ALL tracks are very good.
Also Number of the Beast, Seventh Son, and Fear of the dark are really good ones. But it depends on taste, as always.
Powerslave opens strong, but I don't think it is a good first album. The really big classics off of that CD is Aces High and Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Best song?
errrr.........right now it's Flight of Icarus, but a week ago it was Ghost of the Navigator, and next week probably Caught Somewhere in Time.
Check out Nodding Donkey Blues, a B-side, I think.
Steer clear of the X-Factor stuff, only Man on the Edge are REALLY worthy. And never listen to Blaze Bayley live..........Check out Afraid to Shoot Strangers (live) ,track 4 on CD 1 of The Best of the Beast 2CD-compilation. That's raping.
