Go on then, you rabble. Vote.

The Best
Opeth - Blackwater Park

Close runners up:

Soilwork - A Predator's Portrait
Darkane - Insanity
Dragonlord - Rapture
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper (2001 in Australia, may be different elsewhere)

Honourable mention for not being shit and rocking out at old age:

Slayer - God Hates Us All (nice one guys)
Alice Cooper - Brutal Planet (nice one Alice!)

Dishonourable mentions for being shit and falling over at old age:

Ozzy - Down To Earth (Sorry Ozzy. It's shite. Retire.)
Judas Priest - I forget the name. I got some mp3's and I binned them.

Totally disappointed and disillusioned without listening to it:

Machine Head - Supercharger

GO! GO! POST!

Best overall-

Slayer - God Hates Us All

Opeth - Blackwater Park

Could've been better -

Six Feet Under - True Carnage

Number 1 album of the year would have to be:

Enter My Silence - Remotecontrolled Scythe

Close runners up:

Slayer - God Hates Us All (not as good as other Slayer albums, but it still kicks ass)

Dragonlord - (very nice debut album)

Shit that i didn't bother even listening to:

Ozzy - Whatever it's called...i dont really care.

Machine Head - Garbage shit. Too many bad reviews, can't bring myself to listen to it.

Forgot one for the garbage pile:

Slipknot - Iowa

I listened to maybe 3/4 of the album, forcing myself to listen to song after song of shit. They would have been better off to break up and never write any music again after the first album.

Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper

Absolutely no questions or comments from me on this one! :)

Runner up would be Moonspell with Darkness and Hope, simply because of that cover of Ozzy's Mr. Crowley. I've been a big fan of this band ever since I saw the video for Magdalene on MuchMusic's LOUD a few years ago. I'm glad they're getting a little more exposure.

BTW, I'll have to check out Blackwater park for sure now, after all the rave reviews here. ;)

hey guys, here's top metal album of the year:

Iced Earth - Horror Show

Jon Schaffer fucking rules! I saw them with megadeath and when Tarnowski was doing a solo, they didnt even put the spotlight on him it was just on Schaffer the whole time....ha funny stuff.

It is just that Memnoch was putting them down when there was no need for it at all!

memnoch
2002-01-07, 17:05
Sure there was need....they suck. The first album had some good stuff on it, but the second is pure shit right out of a dog's ass. They've sold out too....well i think they always were from the start. They "claim" to be true to their music and not follow other bands' path and the media and such......but look at them? Every interview they won't shut up about "FUCK EVERYONE MAN!! WE'RE TRUE TO OUR FANS AND SHIT!! THIS IS TRUE MUSIC!! YEAH YEAH WE RULE MAN!!?! YEAH!! BUY OUR STUFF!!! YEAH!!"

I mean....if they wanted to sound a little more sophisticated, and not like 5 year olds with a sugar high, then they could at least have had a conversation with whoever's interviewing them and tell them the true meaning to their songs. Not just "YEAH!!! YEAH!!!" and such.

It doesn't matter if a band sells out! It is the fucking music that counts!......If you had a band that you really like you would want to see them as much as you could then right?

...Any way this is about best albums, not who sells out....
...not about who you don't like but who you do like!

..anyway I don't care any more!

lol, i'm not pissed off at all. And i know they have a lot of fans....how else would their music stay on MTV and shit like that? MTV and radio stations play only what is popular, Slipknot is very popular, that's why they're played a lot.

And Slay, the music does count. That's why i don't like Slipknot anymore, cause since IOWA came out, i don't like their music. IOWA is too similar to their first album....to me it's like they ripped off their own album. If i want to listen to songs which remind me of their first album....then i'll listen to the first album. They didn't change anything from the first to the second. That is why i don't like them anymore.

Hypocrisy: Ten Years of Chaos and Confusion.

This is one great album! If you don't listen to Hypocrisy and you'd like to then start off with this one.

The new Slayer was up to expectation too.

slayme_returns
2002-01-08, 10:13
Yeah, I forgot to mention the new Deicide as one of the year's worst. In Torment In Hell is awful, mediocre death metal. I'm pretty sure it sucked so bad because its basically a burn off album to get done with their deal with Roadrunner. Deicide has been descending in quality since Once Upon the Cross in my opinion though...

RideDaLightning
2002-01-08, 17:27
I still say Iced Earth had the best by far......even their most mellow song is fucking awesome "ghost of freedom" and it goes along with songs like "damien" that just blow ya mind.

Slipknot - Iowa!

Just kidding, lol...

Godflesh - Hymns
Definetly...! Neurosis - A Sun What Never Sets is far away from that one...

Defiled Soul

CoF - BStS

Disciple
2002-01-09, 18:05
1.Devin Townsend - Terria
2.Testament - First Strike still Deadly
3.Slayer - God Hates Us All
4.Fear Factory - Digimortal
5.Annihilator - Carnival Diablos
6.Emperor - Prometheus
7.Ozzy Osbourne - Down to Earth (nobody likes it but me...sniff:( )
8.Bolt Thrower - Honour Valour Pride
9.Iced Earth - Horror Show
10.Aborted - Engineering the Dead

Records that were REALLY disappointing this year:

-Megadeth - The World Needs a Hero (I tried to like it,I really did... somebody needs to kick Mustaine's born-again christian ass)
-Sepultura - Nation (what was that?? They don't seem to know which musical direction to take)
-Machinehead - Supercharger (isn't this a side-project featuring members of Korn and Linkin Park?)
-Deicide - In torment In hell (the songs are fine but please when you record a whole album in 2 days, please don't make it sound like you recorded it in 2 days)
-The usual crap I don't listen to from bands not even worth mentioning.

Well i'm disapointed in myself and in all of you.......throughout all these cds we've mentionned, some which deserved to be mentionned and others not......nobody bothered to mention Dimmu Borgir's "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"?!?! Unless i missed it and i'm too lazy to read through everything again.

But yeah......that album fucking rules.....it's the album which got me listening to Black metal. It's definitely one of the best of the year.

Disciple
2002-01-10, 13:36
Opeth - mmm I don't know...I thought they were special when I first heard the record but then I saw them live and in my eyes they miss something. To me they sound like a blend of Radiohead and My Dying Bride. I can't stand the Radiohead element.
If I liked that kind of music (doom metal) My Dying Bride would score high on my list.

far_beyond_sane
2002-01-10, 20:16
For all their brilliance, I can't imagine Opeth doing a live show. It's not particularly aggressive or showy, and the quiet parts would look really weird in a line-up with other bands of the genre who just rock out.

Still - best CD of the year, no questions.

Here's a short article about Down, with mention of the upcoming record:

From http://www.elektra.com

New Album - comin' soon!

DOWN REUNITES WITH SOPHOMORE EFFORT IN 2002
Downtime between albums has taken on a whole new meaning for rock’s premier underground supergroup… Down. Pantera’s Philip Anselmo and Corrosion Of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan, along with Jimmy Bower of Eye Hate God, Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, and Pantera’s Rex Brown are readying the new Down album, scheduled to hits stores March 26, 2002.

The Louisiana natives (except for Brown) have once again buried themselves in their New Orleans roots - taking a leave of absence from their day jobs to crank out the kind of rock that only Down knows how to cook up.

The group originally formed - sans Brown - as a relaxed free-for-all – just a few close, lifelong friends, all hailing from the true capital of the dirty South – New Orleans - cutting it up with all the southern flair they could muster. What was originally regarded as a pleasurable little side project ultimately surprised the rock world, with Down’s 1995 debut album, NOLA, garnering rave reviews and shipping more than 300,000 units.

The ebullient album struck a chord in rock fans hungry for a no frills, bayou-baked throw down, with one critic colorfully describing the results as: “A rabid Sabbath-on-Moonshine extravaganza.” This time around, Pantera bass player Rex Brown adds even more bottom to Down’s alluvial sound. “I love playing with these guys,” says Philip Anselmo. “We go so far back the music is almost second nature to us.” Recorded in Nodferatu’s Lair somewhere in the swamps of south Louisiana, you can almost hear the bamboo rustling, as well as the no-holds barred camaraderie between each member. “We do this shit for fun,” says Phil. “Down is about the pure love of playing the kind of music that is imbedded in our souls.”

For more info, visit http://www.down-nola.com

I like some of the material off the first Down record; "Stone the Crow" comes to mind instantly. Great song.

I don't think so. How could they be ripping off themselves when their newer stuff is much deeper and heavier than their earlier stuff?

Also i doubt their ripping slipknot off....usually when people copy another band, it turns out worse than ever....but Slayer's new stuff sounds way better than anything Slipknot ever wrote.

I never follow the actual releases, so now I can make a clear list...

Top-5 of the best:
1. Godflesh - Hymns
2. Atomsmasher - s/t
3. Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets
4. Carcass Grinder/Hashdum - Split
5. Godflesh - In All Languages DVD

3 Biggest disappointments:
1. Napalm Death - Enemy of the Music Business
It's utter shit. Completely sucks. Even worse than Utopia Banished...
2. Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets
I expected more for them, but anyways, it's still on my list. The worst about it - Dave didn't do any vocals on that. I feel Neurosis didn't do it's 100% on this one...
3. Napalm Death - DVD
It was hard to decide, what was better the Godflesh or the Napalm DVD... I liked the Godflesh better - Napalm Death shows both might had Mick on the drums, but there were mainly dull tracks on them, and on the prev. unreleased gig there wasn't Mitch, only Jesse.

What I missed from the year:
Mick Harris didn't do shit. No Scorn, no Lull, no EOE, no Painkiller, no Defecation, no nothing...

What I get annoyed of mostly:
Nickelback - Silver Side Up
Damn... I'll have to listen to that crap everytime I turn on my radio...

No, I know that is not right!

..Slipknot is ripping SLAYER off!.........((that is if anyone is getting ripped off))

..Slipknot's song "heretic anthem".....rips off SLAYER's song "Angel of Death"!!!
((especially since the slipknot song came out over ten years after the SLAYER album"Reign in Blood"))

..in the slipknot song, the bass drums are doing that double roll when all the music stops, then while the bass drums are still going the music kicks back in..............
...just like in SLAYER's "Angel of Death"!!!!!

Correct me if I fuck up the releaseyears, I'm really not sure. Here goes:

2. CoB - Follow the Reaper (I don't give a fuck if you HATE ME!!!)
3. Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin (I think it was 2001 in Japan......not sure)
4. Borknagar - Empiricism (or however you spell it. Kick-ass-album)
5. Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical bla bla (It is quite good)

Disappointments:

probably more, I forget bad releases
