Or, you might say, which metal band or bands were the earliest influences of the metal of today that you listen to?

Pantera, and later on some metallica

Yes, Pantera has always been a 'staple' of metal. I read that Zeppelin has a DVD set of live shows and a 3-disc CD set of live shows too (http://www.ledzeppelin.com) coming out. I've never seen a live show by Zeppelin - they're one of my favorite bands and I've always thought of them as one of the pioneering bands of rock, but I can't decide if they could be considered 'metal' though - or even an early prototype of metal. What do you guys think? Could Zeppelin have ever been considered metal?

nah, i dont think they are metal, just the hippie rock of back then, like Hendrix and Jethro Tull (sp?)

it's actually hard to say what was the first metal band i heard...because my older sister was listening to bands like iron maiden, helloween, judas priest, manowar etc all the time. well she says that i used to like maiden the most. can't really remember.

but the first metal bands i listened to were guns n' roses and metallica. then came theatre of tragedy.

Do you think they had any influence on metal at all?

I was reading about the Clear Channel radio promotion to win VIP passes to the screening of the DVD at Loews theater in New York. The winner will actually get to party with Led Zeppelin, whatever that entails. I always wondered what goes into those "party-with-the-band" kind of things. I mean, do you actually get to sit and have drinks and talk with these guys? It says that Led Zeppelin is the biggest selling rock group in history. I did not know that.

One day I bought Vulgar Display of Power because the cover was cool. The rest is history.

The band that defined genuinely heavy music for me was Dying Fetus. I know that's strange, but I started listening to them farking ages ago. (By the way, their recent album with a completely new line-up STILL kicks fucking ass all over town. It must be something about the name.)

What got me into metal - Slayer, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Iron Maiden...I used to listen to a lot of punk years ago(DK, Black Flag, Misfits, the real shit) and eventually I moved on to metal and then thrash/death as it was ultra fast and technical.(Which helped me become a better bassist in the process)

i started off with metallica, then i have to admit that i went into slipknot / mudvayne type music for a little while:( then a friend of mine who was a real metalhead saved my ass and showed me dying fetus, and i fell in love. he got me into some nile as well, and from then on i've been a metalhead.

I always had a huge obsession with the master of puppets cd by metallica when i was like 10, then around 12 i got sum pantera. At first i hated how it didnt stay the same through the whole song.... then later that night i was humming the song cowboys from hell lol. So it was Metallica that got into the heavy stuff, but Pantera that kept me coming back for more.

Heard 'The End Complete' by Obituary & just about blew my load. But being the lazy, uninspired fuck that I am, I began listening to Metallica 2 years later in high school :(

Finally, many moons later, I've basically utilised Slayer as a base camp to get into crazier & crazier stuff. Cannibal Corpse defined horrible, then Satyricon defined psychotic, raw musical horrible.

Good news for all :D

Back in the day, i could say that it was STP and Soundgarden that initiated my transition into music. Fear Factory was the first metal band to rock my socks off. They stuck around for a while, then i discovered Dillinger.

well to think of it, we all diss metallica's new stuff...but then all of us also respect metallica for the stuff they pulled off in the beginning...that way yeah they ARE one of the greatest bands ever.

and speaking of maiden, well they make the most repititive of progressions sound kickass !!! the only word that comes to my mind when i think of maiden is RESPECT !!!

Stuff is Great
2003-10-21, 18:55
Wow...

...no Iron Maiden...

...odd....

Anyway, yes, Metallica deserve nought but cred for being the awesome, ground-breaking champs they were. However, I think it's still fair to call them complete cunts because of the way they've completely fucked over anyone who began listening to them between 'Kill 'Em All' & the black album.

Kind of like the way George Lucas is arsing all Star Wars fans with his shite new movies. The old stuff still rocks, but you've still got a picture of 'modern them' stuck to your dart board.

I started out with Ride Lightning as my first album. Then my friend got me into Pantera, Megadeth, Testament. I loved Metallica preload. After Load all i got was their Garage Inc. I still think there best album was Kill'em All because of its speed and inovative guitar, which might i add was part the brain child of Dave Mustaine and not Kirk.
But any way those are the guys who started me off and after that came a huge obsession with Maiden, AC/DC, and others.
