for a slide, i tried pocket knives and all that shit. but it didnt do as smothly as i thought it would. so i just bought a dunlop glass slide to put on my finger. it still kinda sux. the only different i think is that i can slide it over my finger. it doesnt go smoothly enought. when it goes over the frets, u can still kinda hear it hitting the frets. not as bad as sliding with yur own bare finger, but not as good as should be. anybody help me with this? is it a thing where i just gotta get better in time? it was 4 bux, so im not like "dammit! waste of money!". yet i would still like to be able to use it. so any explinations/guesses would be cool.:D

And to answer your question, I think there are two options.
1. You have to low action, so you can hardly touch the strings without making them touch the frets.
2. You push the strings down too hard. You're only supposed to touch the strings, not press them against the fretboard.
I have been using bottles for slides, and they work great, except for the size...

If you want do play with slides you have to "lift" your strings.
Most people like low "string-height", so they can play faster with it, because of the less distance between fret and string. Although it's not much, it's enough. And with this small distance it's clear that the strings contact the frets and this slide-feeling gets lost.
When you play the slide with less power, you could get those terrible noises.
So lift your strings. If you've got a trem you've got a small problem, because of the springs in the trem.
Don't forget to rearrange the real intonation of the octaves. If you lift the strings, then they are longer than before and the octaves aren't correct.

about the slide thing, i found out that it was cuz i thought u were supposed to press down on the frets when u just let the slide act like a mute. so that was it:)
