I was just restringing my guitar, and I was wondering what tunings you guys have a special attachment to, like ones that you usually leave your guitar in. I have my Gibson tuned to C# right now, that's probably my complete favorite tuning, and I just restrung my other guitar to B flat, Morbid Angel style for when I feel like jammin out some death metal sounding stuff.
So just let me know what the tunings you guys like the best are, and tell me why.
I like D very much.
This is a custom tunning (the numbes are showing how much does it needs to be up/downtoned)
E -4
A -4
D -3
G -5
H -4
E -4
It has got a sounding like you are playing on a very downtoned 7-strings without the E.

Seems decent, but what is an H?
walpurgis
2001-08-05, 11:21
Actually, with logic, H would be the A, since H comes after G in the alphabet, and A comes after G in the musical alphabet. :p
So is it B or A?
Alright, the scale of musical alphabet is normally
'CDFEGAH'
If it has got one (or more) bass modifiers in it, the H is changes into B. Just like C changes into 'C sharp'.
'CsharpDFEGAB'

Hmmm, never heard about an H in music.......
Perhaps they teach it different way in the US and in Europe.

Probably man.....
here the C scale, the major scale with no sharps or flats runs as CDEFGABC for one octave.
Yeah, here the major scale is basicly the same, but there's a H instead of the B.

Ahh, that's what messed me up then...
So how'd you come across that tuning anyway? Does a certain band use it?
Nope... Once my giutar did came out of tune in the way of that tuning. I did precise it, because it was a bit off-key, and it sounded so cool, I kept that tuning, and now Black Section's giutarists uses it.

this is my first time online today
well I only have two guitars with Floyd Rose's so,my favorite tunings are
Eb for one and the other guitar C#
I don't like tuning below that because I hate 7 string tunings, don't ask why,I just do.

i would have to say my favorite tunings are Eb, and C#. the lowest i ever tuned to was B, and i thought it was cool.
i just use regular tunning most of the time, Pantera tunning kicks fucken ass, i fucked around with a baratone guitar , that motherfucker is tuned low, i thought it sounded cool
i dont believe in low tunings for guitar, its stupid,it just reminds me of korn and staind

Low tunings remind me of Tony Iommi, considering he was about the first person to use them, and he actually did that due to losing the tips of two of his fingers...
*shrugs* Oh well.
he tunes to an Eb and a C# to
alot of dumb ass new shit just like really low tunning cuz you cant really hear what the hell they're doing, but you just gotta know how to use it, Pantera tunes down pretty low, so does Slayer, my ass makes better music than korn and Staind
i never said korn and staind were better or even good
Yeah, most of the nu-metal bands tunes just down to 'be heavy'. It is undignified.

Damn nu-metal...
yeah well its taking over so forget it.....

Doesn't mean we have to like it or even recognize it...
I hate seeing 12-14 years old boys wearing red baseball caps, baggy jeans and wu-tang clan shirts. It's pissing me off.

Those kinds of people usually try to avoid me, so it's not a problem, merely an inconvenience :) :) :)

I've got my V tuned down to B cause i was jammin along with some Hypocrisy songs....the strings are just kinda flappin there lol...and yes, it sounds all muddy. :vampire:
i got my warlock tuned to D (not fucking goddamn stupid ass muhfuckin drop d!)
or Obituary tuning or far beyond driven tuning....thats really as low as i tuned and actually played it for more than a day
Yeah, closed D kicks ass!
walpurgis
2001-08-12, 09:24
So it's called closed D when all the strings are dropped 1 step?
walpurgis
2001-08-12, 09:35
ok, thanks
Whats a 'irrevocably'?
no one stays on topics here do they?
my fav. tunings are
Eb
D (not drop d bullshit,i hate that)
C#
B (only for Morbid songs)
walpurgis
2001-08-16, 20:29
First off, Dude, we didn't go far off topic.
Irrevocably, Katham, means that something is done and cannot be undone, or taken back,a nd such...know what I meant now?
Haha, Bob! Caught you on that! I were only bullshitting/joking :p. :D

I didn't want to be rude to Katham, when he asked what irrevocably means, but I have a feeling these most recent posts will be gone by tomorrow...

My favorite tunings I guess would have to be
Eb (for Slayer, Cannibal Corpse)
closed D (Death, Sepultura, Hate Eternal)
C# (Gorguts)
B (At The Gates)
Bb (Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse)
and that's it I guess.
:flame:
i like tuning to a Gb so i can play mortician
Hehe, looks like you're looking for forum troubles... No problem with it, tho, until you're getting into provoking... ;)
why the hell would i be in trouble for posting one of my favorite tunings? seriously?

Anyway back to the subject how some of you said low tuning is stupid. It might sound stupid if you just play the same two chords over and over and over again like Korn does. If you want to here how a seven string is played right then I would recomend listening to some Hypocrisy. I don't think that anybody can say that Peter Tagtgren isn't a bad ass mother fucker. And if your worried about floppy strings then i'd recomend getting a seven sting with some flatwound 14's slaped on it.
Anyway I don't own a seven string . My fovorite tunins are:
EB: for Slayer and Deicde
D : for Obituary, Six Feet Under and Death
C, C# ,B and A: for Hypocrisy
 :bawling:

C# & Closed D for Pantera
C for Cryptopsy
and Bb for Morbid Angel
I only tuned to Eb...mainly cause i have a floyd rose, and one of my locking nuts is loose, i don't tune down low, cause i have a hard time with it. If i have fixed bridge, i'd go to B and C# and whatever tunnings i'd have to to play some Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Carcass and so forth....

Damn that sucks.
I have 6 or so guitars all with Floyd's just for that reason. All with Alternate tunings & settings.:p
Jesus, the mother fuckers from Morbid Angel tune that shit low, don't they?
Are the strings falling off of the fretboard?
I am pure standard babay! Of course I don't play metal music though :D

2001-09-16, 14:45
Yeah they drop that shit down there (Morbid Angel)
Sounds fucking awesome when you just want to riff someone's fucking head off :p

That's monstrously low! It's almost impossible to play shit that low. Early Staind, Mike Mushok tuned down to B I believe. Heavy shit!

B isnt low.
I tune to a Gb sometimes.

I like tuning to Eb not only because it's tuning Slayer, Alice in Chains, and Van Halen play in, but it just feels better. I can get a broader vibrato and I can get whole-tone bends more easily.
There's an Alice in Chains song that uses an open D (I think) tuning. It's from their self-titled album, but I can't remember the name of it. Pretty cool tune though.
Oh, and on tuning to Gb for Sandblasted Skin, isn't that just Pantera's normal D tuning with the low D string dropped down to Gb?
Gb seems fucking low man....ive never heard of sandlbasted whatever, but to me that seems a little too low.....wouldn't you not hear the notes anymore?? At least not very easily

thats because idiots think tuning to a Bb is low, because they use fucking 9's to tune down.
You have to understand the gauges and which tunings to use.I use 11-56 gauge to tune to a Gb and they already have a lot of tension on them,it doesnt fuck up my floyd rose either,i just had to take a spring out.
and no,its not a closed d,what the fuck, its just straight steps down to Gb why would he just use one string to a whoel song, its not even a dropped d,its so low.so that doesnt make sense.
I do understand gauges, i use 11-56 cause i find 9-42 is too thin and goes out of tune too fast.....and it's harder to down tune.....plus u can't go low with 9-42......but anyways, i don't think i'll ever need to go to Gb, i was just asking.

I know you were just asking.
I just tune down to a Gb for a few bands I play along with.My songs are in Eb C# and Bb.
I'm new to this board..
But i'll throw in my tunings anway..
I'm currently tuned to D , I play a 7 string however, so it's down to A... Normally play in Eb (Bb for the 7th) for Slayer.. but decided to go a bit deeper...

*bumpin up this one for the memory of walpurigs.
I go straight D or B.

My Clapton Strat is tuned in E for shred style songs or some Testament, Iron Maiden, Sonata Arctica, or some blues shit which I rarely play. My Warlock is tuned down a step for Death or the more brutal Testament or Children of Bodom. My Jackson is tuned to Eb for Stratovarius, Iced Earth, and most other bands I jam to.
I can't pick a favorite tuning.
on my Carvin 7 string...
I have a Carvin 7 string too! Nice guitars.
Anyway, I like to tune either E or B.
Eb - speed/thrash 42-9
C# - grind 49-11
drop A or G for death 56-13

i usually just play two guitars, i keep one down a hole step ( D,G,C,F,A,D) and i play this most of the time when recording my own music and with my band. I keep my other guitar standard if i feel like playing some classic shit or somethin.
Jackson SL - Eb with 46-10
BC Rich V - A for my Anal Cunt Worship band and B or Bb for whatever else. 49-11
