Now heavy can interpreted different ways. Some think of "sonically heavy", which is loud recording and the gain turned up. Nu-metal is more infamous for that. Then there is "grind-death-metal heavy", which is the kind you guys talk about. That's what I want to know. Overall, what band do you guys think, cuts the mustard. I'm interested in opinions here. Let's open the floor.

I think Morbid Angel is probably one of the heaviest.

Anyone who says Mortician will die a slow detah. :)

Decapitated! :behead: :behead: :behead: :behead:

is the fucking heavist band ever. Talk about extreme power of 2 guitarists. You listen to one song and its so heavy it will torture your speakers :) You have to check out their cover of Slayer's song "Mandatory Suicide" IT MAKES SLAYER SOUND SO FUCKING WEAK compared to the power of Decapitated. By the way, they are Polish and definately are the best band from Poland

:uzi: :flame:

FUCK VADER, THEY SUCK COMPARED THE DECAPITATED!!!

Also..
Disgorge
Devourment

Hm theres something with heaviness and the bands starting with 'd'

Old Cannibal Corpse such as Tomb of The Mutilated is pretty heavy for old shit you know!

Dying Fetus is also around there too! Now beats it with the hard palm mute hardcore riffs THEY RULE!

Morbid Angel isn't that heavy you know... Only til their recent albums have they come a little "heavy", but they are still a good death metal band. Their old shit sounds weak to cannibal corpse's old shit :D

I'd say Morbid Angel is one of the heaviest sounding bands i know....but probably not the heaviest. I don't know for sure which one would be the all time heaviest, but i have some bands in mind:
Incantation (mostly The Infernal Storm)
Immolation (heavy sound, i love em! :) )
Nile (they've got some fast riffs, but it's all heavy deep sounding everything, the singer rules too)

yeah.....that's all i can think of right now.

What is of course hilarious about this statement is that Decapitated only has one guitarist. Live, they have a session guy (who plays guitar in Sceptic), but for recording it's just the one guy. It doesn't have to take two guitarists to sound heavy on a studio recording. You just need one guy who is very tight and patient enough to record multiple tracks.

FUCK VADER, THEY SUCK COMPARED THE DECAPITATED!!!

Vader play a different style of death metal. Comparing them is not exactly fair in this context.

heavy?

Immolation
Carcass (on Heartwork, they sound fat)
Nevermore (on "The Politics of Ecstasy")

I'll think of some more when I get back home and check out my CDs.

FINALLY!!!!!!! RECOGNITION FOR IMMOLATION OTHER THAN ME AND FD!!!!!!!!! W00!!! I LOVE YOU LAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Immolation has a very VERY heavy sound.....and it's not just heavy, the music is amazing and it sounds awesome, like nothing i've ever heard before. Definitely one of the best and heaviest bands i know of.

Another band i recently discovered which i consider to be probably one of or maybe even the heaviest band i know, is Crowbar. Every song by this band is heavy shit. It's awesome. Most of it are slow riffs, with heavy slow drumming, and low chords with nice riffs and shit, it's sweet stuff.

For a new metalhead you're doing fucking well for yourself. Those are some top discs there. Dream Theater is amazing.

The vocals are black metal style (so yes, the odd bit of screaming), but they're completely coherent... and they're a lot more interesting than traditional black metal cliche shit vocals! You shouldn't have to read the liner notes to find out the words.

They also never mention the phrase "Cookie cookie cookie!" so they're not very cookie-monster at all :p

Hey, Nuge. Listen to your old pal here. Yes they have those vocals you don't like. But Sane is right. Mikael is a whole lot better singer than most death/black metalists (and that does include Dani Filth! For Christ's sakes, he's not that good. He uses a bleamin' pedal!). But he also is a really good (real) singer. He has a pretty voice. He switches from "good voice" to "understandable" voice. I think you would grow to like it.

Vortigern
2002-01-15, 07:04
Is there actually ever somebody that really cares? I mean, what does it matter which band is the heaviest? If you like 'm, that's enough. And heaviness can be seen in many different ways, either in guitar-tuning, or speed, or whatever.
And of course Cradle Of Filth is cool, but I wouldn't immediately call them the best band in the world. There are still a lot of bands that I don't know well enough to be able to judge this. If it's black or death metal, I'll try it.:uzi:

far_beyond_sane
2002-01-15, 07:32
Of course it matters, it makes for pretty interesting conversation. Heaviest does not equal best, even the retards here know that.

You see how grumpy comments like Wannabe's original one are the genesis of completely off-topic stuff? Being nice is so much better for the economy, too.

Vortigern
2002-01-16, 07:09
I was trying not to state the bleeding obvious. Next time I'll do it anyway. Let me rephrase what I meant:
Morbid Angel is heavy, and so is Avulsed and about 666 other bands. Bands that are definetely NOT heavy are crap like Limp Bizkit. Last week I tried to explain this to some friends who presumed that Limp Bizkit kicked arse. Grinning obtrusely in the background I decided that they didn't know heavy when it got up and bit them. But instead of making snipe comments and entering an argument that would know no progress, I simply walked up to my record-collection and put 'Human' (Death) in the recordplayer. They were quiet pretty fast. And to think I could have made it worse by playing Deranged.
But how the fuck can you determine which of the extreme bands is heavier than the other? Dark Funeral is heavy in an other sense than Dismembered.
But if you really want to know, for me Centurian is the heaviest, combining the skill of Morbid Angel, the drive of Dismembered and the power of Marduk.

well, actually that guy is my best friend that i've known for 6 years. He is a real metalhead, believe me! I mean, listening to korn, really doesn't make you less of a metallhead. I listen to lots of non-metal music......just hardly ever is it nu-metal. I like classical a lot, and i like some rock/contemporary music that's soft sounding.

The reason i don't like nu-metal crap like Korn, limp bizkit and whoever is cause they all don't have talent.....and if you argue that they do, they don't fucking use their talent. Why have a whole 6 minute song, with 2 riffs? A verse with 3 high pitched notes, and a chorus with 4 Power Chords??? I mean, come on, that style gets old fast......get some variation going!!! u know?!??! (for those of you who are ignorant, my little example of shit was Korn.)

but they sometimes make nice tunes for paties where you're the only metalhead around and the fuckin' dj doesn't want to play something that you like. then again, why should anyone want to go to such a party anyway?

I can honestly say that Mortician is physically impossible to beat. but I think I prefer Impetigo and Exhumed. one time I say Mortician perform on a small festival near where I live and the cool thing was that they were the only band to play 30+ songs in their set. try beating that one!

I have a statement...of use...

Wannabe = metalhead (for the most part)

Wannabe listens to:

Jazz
Blues
Punk
Classical
Big Band
Singers & Standards
Singers & Songwriters
Folk
Rhythm & Blues (I'm talkin' T-bone Walker and Muddy Waters)
Surf Music
Acid Rock
Indie Rock
Alt. Rock (which encompasses 30 billion types)
Pop Rock
(some) Rap
Old Country
METAL

And I love every sub-genre of each. Each one has so many break-offs...we'd be here all day. And that's about HALF of the main genres I listen to.

Korn is metal. It's called Nu (or Alt.) metal, for those of you who don't know. Sometimes sub-categorized as Rapcore. It's not rap. It's not supposed to be brutal fucking thrash death metal. Korn is pretty heavy, as well as talented.

Yes....we know Korn is nu-metal. And rapcore isn't supposed to be brutal fucking thrash death metal......because brutal fucking thrash death metal, is really, DEATH METAL. So no rapcore band goes under this category either.

But nonetheless, korn is nu-metal....and i don't like em. I only like about 0.01% of all songs ever written in the nu-metal genre...and it so happens none of those are Korns.

RomikQ
2002-02-12, 22:21
korn's not as bad as Limp Bizkit (or Linkin Park, or etc..), but I really don't consider it metal. Not even nu-metal. Nu-metal is like Static-x (which i also hate) or smthng... i think... well anyway, korn is average, compared to some other shit out there.

All bands mentioned are Nu-metal...everyone followed korn, and korn started the whole Nu-metal thing (at least commercially)...static-x is an example of your really obvious nu-metal lack of talent, of which every song has starts as either crappy muting over and over, or a high note followed by a low note over and over again.

also the point of "korn is rock w/downtuned guitars"...do you even listen to rock? korn never has made a single song sounding anything like rock...listen to creed, silverchair, 3 doors down etc...thats rock...korn is nu-metal, and always were.

and on the palm muting point...yes all metal bands use it, as some point...even rock bands use it, hell punks bands use it, palm muting is just an extra u can put into a song to try and make it better

I'm gonna have to take a whole new aproach and say a band like Soilent Green or Lamb of God would be the heaviest, because the beats are maddening. It's not just one straight forward double bass drum line. Maybe death and doom metal LYRICS are heavier, but I still think overall something as driving as Soilent Green or Lamb of God has to be heavier. My other take on it would be that something like The Haunted would be up there, because of pretty much the same reason, but with the addition of violent lyrics and speed.

Henry Wolfe

I do listen to Grind, The Berzerker kicks ass. But I just think Lamb of God and Soilent Green are heavier. There's not much drive to Grind. It's hell of chaotic, but that's not what I consider "heavy".:vampire:

Vortigern
2002-02-26, 03:46
it depends a little. some grindbands do know how to play a non-chaotic song. abaddon incarnate do rule. nasum? hell yeah! i'm a little partial to exhumed as well. soilent green is ok, but it tends to get on my nerves after a couple of songs. not really my cup of something.

i'm a little lost here Henry Wolfe (are u Wolfe from the Opeth forum?) because i always thought heavy generally meant low, loud, brutal 'n' fast (well musicly anyway lol). Alternatively you could look at say erm Katatonia as heavy due to the heavy weight felt through the pain in his lyrics and vocal expression of them.... but thats not heavy music, grindcore i still think is the heaviest.

Vortigern
2002-02-28, 06:07
not too sure about that one. grindcore is pretty fast and mostly chaotic, but i feel that some bands that play slow (and i do mean slow) ca

Vortigern

not too sure about that one. grindcore is pretty fast and mostly chaotic, but i feel that some bands that play slow (and i do mean slow) can be a lot heavier than a lot of grindcore bands who think that 'let's play some fast notes in random order for thirty seconds and call them songs'. but here you'sve got the question again whether heavy equals extreme. (don't think so, by the way)

1. Sinister (especially there new album because a chick sings)
2. Old man's child (some of there stuff is very extreme)

But that band that i say takes the fucking cake, and always leaves my ears ringing after i listen to them is:

Naglfar? I don't know if you're living in the same world as me, the stuff I have is just solid ole Dissection-ish death/black metal. Nile, for example, is noticably more brutal.

I think I like Naglfar better though. The cover of The Evil That Men Do just fucking rules. ALL Iron Maiden covers rule.

Now don't get me wrong, death and black metal is great but heaviness does not only depend on speed, harshness and how low you tune. It's gotta be a full sound - a total aural explosion. I think Strapping Young Lad (SYL) is one of the heaviest bands I've heard. You black metalers probabaly won't like it at all because it is "sonic", electronic and not very evil... but god damn it! It's a huge fucking sound! Try Underneath the Waves... it's great. I think lyrical content adds to it too - SYL lyrics are some of the most pissed off fucking lyrics... it's not whinging shit you hear from nu-metal. It's fuck everything and fuck u all!

I guess that is to deep for you to understand.

Anyway, Exhumed, how could I forget them?

whoever said Dillinger Escape plan was on the right track, there are some heavy hardcore bands. Just not in the "i'm gonna play me a real high gained guitar while my drummer blasts your balls with his double bass blast beats that he plays in every song" heavy.

Every Time I Die, Converge, Caliban, December, Norma Jean, Evergreen Terrace, A Jealousy Issue, all some good hardcore bands that are heavy in that hardcore way.

agrophic nosebleed are pretty heavy

I could never get into Agoraphobic Nosebleed. I think Anal Cunt is much beter, faster, and heavier. Agoraphobic Nosebleed even stole teh whole idea of putting a bunch of songs on a small format for Anal Cunt. AxCx did it with the 6854 song e.p. where there really where that many songs. See they studio had a 16 track recorder. So tehy recorded a song on each track. So you are hearing 16 songs at once through teh whoplerecord. Well that is if you ever had the pleasure to hear it. The guitar player for Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Pigdestroyer(his name slips me) was in AxCx duringh the recording of "40 More Reasons To Hate Us" but only wrote and rcorded afew of teh songs. He also did a few shows. Anal Cunt is better.

Im not a fan of either of them but ne ofthe guys from anal cunt helped with the drm machine on the Alterted States of America. ANB has 100 beats a second, AC dosent...whos faster? Anyway this is about heavyness so don't anwser this.

Why didn't you reply to my post bones?

Agoraphobic Nosebleed (in my opinion) isnt the heaviest, by BY FAR the fastest. Now if it not for there drummachine I think it might be a diffrent story. They said they are getting the drummer from Burnt by the Sun who is said to be extremly fast (even though it seems to lack on his records) but im looking forword to seeing that. I haven't been online for a while, where did you post?

Speaking of which, does anyone know where that intro to that song is from? I think I've heard it before....but I cant recall where.

Well, i think the whole deathmetal/goregrind sene is fucking heavy. such as:
-Cannibal Corpse.
-Severe Torture (very good band from holland)
-Dead Infection.
- Sikfuk.

But also some blackmetal is heavy:
-Enthroned.
-Marduk.
-Immortal.
-Burzum.

But i don't think that there's a band thats much better/heavyr than another. A band such as Immortal has very intense black metal (diabolical fullmoon mytsicim), but also less heavy (damned in black)

After a gig or concert?
I never had a chance to start a conversation with em'.
But I came up to one of em and told them that they fuckin kick ass.
And thats all because I was helping my grandmother to get inside my car.
But I would see the members smoking outside on their staircase.

Ps. Did you know that Rafi is armenian? Haha, I thought I was the
only armenian into Death Metal. Guess not...

RUSSIANROULETTE

I didn't know any of them were armenian I though they were hispanic, they look it. Man, some times i feel like i'm the only Puerto Rican into Deathmetal.

You're family seems to know a lot of good bands man, I remember you said your mom works with a guy from Spawn too, is that right?

I don't know too many signed artists except Daddy Longlegs from Wolfpac and ex Blood Hound Gang. He's not what I would call a good musician but he's a cool guy.

Heavy?

Crowbar. On there videos, they have two huge guys in the band alone.

The band must weigh over 1000 lbs.

Chad
2003-08-14, 08:22
Type O Negative are pretty heavy as well. Not as fat as Crowbar, but not one is under 6 feet tall, or under 200 lbs.:p

Seriously, here are my picks:

1. Black Sabbath
2. Old Paradise Lost
3. Old My Dying Bride
4. Black Sabbath
5. 80's Napalm Death
6. Morbid Angel
7. Black Sabbath
8. Black Sabbath

I'm not into the heaviest of heavy but from what i've heard of it, Vader and Crytopsy seem to be pretty damn brutal without being stupidly heavy. I cant listen to grind or death for too long, i need some clear classic melody in there somewhere but i can see why people like it.

As for nu metal i've grown out of Korn but i like slipknots Iowa album. The first two were wank tho. Limp Bizkit are crap cos they wear socks on their heads .... LMFAO

i listen to doom metal radio sometimes (available via http://www.live365.com), and most of the bands they play are heavy in my opinion. not in the brutal type heavy, but just so slow and massive, it's like a wall of sound pours out of my little crappy desktop speakers :) hierophant, for example, how slow it is possible to play...so a lot of doom bands are heavy. i like my dying bride and old paradise lost.

but heavy and brutal, for me it'd be morbid angel, cannibal corpse, behemoth and bloodbath (as i look my record collection and winamp playlist). kinda typical answer i guess.

Morbid is hell not the heaviest band, there 1000 bands more heavier then that!!
