It depends on the pickups. If they are exposed coil pups, you should be able to remove the casings and paint them. Obviosly don't paint over the coils! If they are elcosed like EMG's dont do it.

As far as paint I have used acrylic artist paints and they work pretty well.

If I were you I would just buy new one's its a waste to paint them it will just come off again. It will probably be cheaper than to get the paint to buy them and plus you wont have to worry about messing your pickup's or anyhting up. Go buy new ones!!! Or if you want just steal them!!

painting the single coil casings shouldn't affect the tone adversely in any way. i'd recommend you paint them with acrylic paint / spray paint, and cover the paint with some spray acrylic lacquer for protection.

Doesn't kirk hammet have painted EMG's on his mummy guitar?

I rarely deliberately act like an ass....but shit guys.
This thread is years old...I'm SURE the author has figured it out now.

And as far as Hammets pickups...I seriously doubt he's painting them....he makes a call and says,
I want bla bla color pickups and a few days later he has whatever he wants from the manufacturer installed on whatever he desires.

FUCKING DUHHHHHHHHHHH

You can paint a pup with no problem at all as long as it is permiable(sp) to magnetic flux fields. Most paint is but some paints can contain metals that can be magnetized. Paints with aluminum are fine as aluminum allows magnetic fields to pass without the aluminum becoming polarized oxer time.

Bottom line is painting a pup will not affect a thing as long as it does not contain any metals other then aluminum.
