What is your guys opinion on doing this? Is it fake and pointless, or just another way to get the vocals you want for the overall expression of the song? Im saying this in basically like distortion pedals that make significant change in your vocals.

Speaking personally, I think it's a load of bullshit. You shouldn't have to use effects and shit just to get a sound out of yourself.

If you're using effects for the sake of getting inhumanly silly sounding and obviously effected vocals like Cock And Ball Torture or something then fair enough. If you're using effects to cover up the fact that you're a bit shit in the hope that you'll be able to pass it off as real then forshame.

OR you could just practice until you're good at what you're doing. Rather than being a pussy and taking the easy way.

Some people man theres just no hope for in a singing career. Only thing i hate is when someone uses a synthesizer for their voice on their bands demo. But when they hit the stage they don't have access to a synthesizer and sound like complete shit so it ends up being a waste of money and time to see a shit band and you just end up getting completely smashed at the bar trying to drown/mute them out. It least this kid could bring his distortion pedal up on stage.

Well,

Scott Weiland from velvet revolver / STP uses a megaphone.

He sings into the megaphone and then mics the megaphone.

What about talk boxes?

best vocal effects i've heard were from Satyricon.

For certain lines, he would distort his already scratchy black metal vocals... made for serious eardrum vibrations at the concert.
He also used a flanger or a phaser or soemthing over it for a cool effect... immortal has done this too.
Best part was when he used a speaker rotator so it sounded like his vouce was circling the audience, it was SOOOOO sweet.

I'd like to use a ring mod with vocals once... it might get some crazy stuff goin... and a random arpeggiator...

I also agree but using an echo is cool thats about it though.

I use a vocal pedal every now and then... I don't do it to cover up for the fact that I can't scream/sing... I can do both... I can scream VERY well.

I use the pedal to get a low demonic type of voice effect... plus I will use delays and weird distortions every now and then.

On top of that, right now we run our vocals through the same amp that our bass player runs through (so poor we all are), and the vocal pedal kind of powers the mic, so it doesn't drain from the bass as much... I have pretty demanding vocals. It also effects the volume of my mic... I can turn the mic input on the amp down to cut back on feedback and turn the volume on the pedal up...

Just in general it has proven to be very useful. It cleaned up the sound a little too.

I don't use it to make a yell sound like a growl by any means...I can naturally reach the the deep lows and the screeching highs. I have practiced for a whole lot of years... Now the pedal basically does what I would do with a mixer... on top of giving me the demonic style voice and echoes and trippy effects.

I Am: a vocal pedal user.
