hello everybody i am new to the forum and i was wondering what everybody's favorite metal scale was; I was reading some of the posts and have seen that people say metal is in minor or harmonic minor, but To make a cool riff I use the diminished scale.

yeah those three are pretty cool to metal...dimished is simply excellent....I also like the hungarian and the japanese scale...it gives some sort of strange feeling....//

hey man, is it possible you could write a breif tab for an iolian????

i havn't been a theory person for very long and i'd love to know the iolian progressions and scales :D

Pentatonic Minor......despite what many guitarists think, this scale goes a long fucking way. It's also been used to death in many blues songs.

u take the notes from the scale...then make em a chord with em...dunno, the common 5th of a note...or 9th or wathever....for example if u have

A---7--8--10---

u can make

D---9-10-12--
A---7--8--10--

and just invent your rythm pattern...and mix em///

every time i try and write a song, it comes out like a rock song...
uhhhh, almost van halen style, but with a fast drum beat. i can't write
any black i don't think...
...so basically, all my songs are like something van halen would write,
with the evil throat of mine. and it sounds really weird.

i don't need a sclate to make a riff based on power chords. i just do what sounds good to me.
I guess using a scale to make a riff is to use only notes from a scale in particular. Is that it?
Where can i find all that scales?
Can i play all the notes in a scale with power chords?

hmmmm... i can see i really nedd to improve on my theory :(

here and thier you can go out of scale to make an odd sound but get that down fast up and down. Please guys seriously, use a metranome!

honestly I'm no expert on this whole thing, but people who say it sounds like a rock song and not death or whatever, don't be afraid to improvise. I like to set a basic precedent for the song but I tend to make up my own scales. I like to think of each note's relationship to the subsequent notes and try to rock out that way. I don't know the name of it, but the one used by a lot of Melodic Death/Swedish bands is pretty good sounding.

thats not a scale, just like a riff piece thats common, sorta like nu metals

6 -0-3-2-1-0-3-2-1 bla bla

they call it a scale because it consists of notes that connect with each other and can be repated, duplicated, and you can switch from a high E to a Low e and it will still sound in key and nice.but the 0 2 3 does sound nice tho

get g major down and rip on that for a while... it will help sooo much and you'll see it used in a lot of songs and i dunno it will be good!

I just got harmonic minor pretty much memorized but I can't flow with it yet.. it sounds really good though for metal!

THe iolian is probbaly the bst to work with because it includes all the kinds of fingering, the triple space (3-5-7), the double to single (4-5-7), and the single to double (5-7-8) and then back workds ect. Sometime today i will just scan like 4 pages of all these scales. probbaly byt later tonight they'll be on.

There are so many great scales to use, I think east-European and neoclassical is the best sound for metal, like the Spanish and Hungarian formula's, but lately I've been very content with the old Phrygian mode:

If you want an overview of nearly all scales and modes try out the program "Guitar Power".
Some of the features are:
Over 3000 chord voicings
Over 500 scales
Over 550 arpeggios
Triads in any inversion
Notes on the fretboard
Chord / Scale relationships

HEY! Look at the top of the guitar forum, scales and sweeps. look at them. IT has all the main scales, and the harmoic scales are METAL SCALES!!!! check it out thats what i posted it for.

My favorite would be the standard scale for all kinds of metal: E Minor :D
Sometimes i use harmonic minor, diminished

Or this scale:

(i don't know what it's called, but it's sounds cool for death metal and Morbid Angel uses this scale sometimes)

i don't think it's used much, but i have a special predilection for the double harmonic scale. it's rare but very interesting. if you don't know it, here is how it is constructed:
