what are your favorite tv shows that ended before you even began to appreciate them..............or just fav tv shows.

ha..well, for me:

practically every series on HBO besides sex and the city. so:

entourage (especially earlier seasons)
deadwood
the sopranos
THE FUCKING WIRE (best show currently on television)
mr. show

and few that weren't on HBO:

freaks & geeks (only one season long but ridiculously entertaining. do whatever you can to get a copy of this show)
upright citzens brigade
futurama
wondershowzen
pee-wees playhouse
ren & stimpy

that about does 'er.

(of course the simpsons, but they go without mentioning. and south park)

Mr. Show, South Park, Futurama, The Simpsons, The Singing Detective. That last one shits all over every other TV show, ever. Especially your favorite one. I see I forgot Twin Peaks. That ruled too.

I guess I watch some Venture Bros. these days too. Not having a TV makes it hard for me to watch much. I don't mean that logistically, since I could go to any number of peoples' houses and watch their TVs. I mean that, when I do see a TV show, it's immediately apparent how much damage it's going to do to me to watch it. So I don't.

I keep hearing hype for the Wire, but I don't buy it. I'm not too impressed by HBO's programming; it's above-average TV, but since TV has become a very dumb medium, a 'good' TV show is something like a 'gorgeous' gnat; I haven't seen one and wonder at the people who claim to have done so.

There are some exceptions: The Simpsons, Futurama, and South Park were all part of growing up, and Trey and Matt are masters of satire and of spinning a 30-minute narrative. Lynch tried to break through the medium's limitations by making a show that went as far as possible without anything happening, but because TV audiences want simplicity and clarity, and he couldn't really write and direct it all himself, he lost out to the medium. Still a good show.

The Singing Detective is tops because it takes a TV show's great strength - that it can build up hour upon hour of stuff - and actually uses it, here by building new layers of ambiguity with each episode, rather than doing the usual bit of establishing a pattern and then sticking to it, rewarding those who want some more of the familiar. It effectively showed what a TV show could do if the people behind it were smart enough and the money behind it backed off.

So far this hasn't happened again. HBO shows, and now one or two on most network, ape movies without being willing to deliver the same type of complexity. But The Wire has a good idea at core, so I guess I'll check it out.

Yeah. The only source of laughter in life is sitcoms.

The canned laugh tracks of sitcoms actually kinda disturb me, knowing that many are the same as 50 years or so ago and that much of the laughter you hear is from people long dead. The combination of that with canned laughter's false catharsis (you don't actually have to laugh to to get relieved in the way laughter can relieve you, because somebody else does it for you) and its calculated contagiousness and the whole thing bothers me. Like a mechanical shoulder rub from Frankenstein.

Lost is just a show you can invest a lot of time in.

Yeah. The only source of laughter in life is sitcoms.

Twas a sarcastic joke.

I could seriously careless for any of the "canned" laughter you speak of anyways. I think you're focusing way too hard on the wrong aspects of any of the shows that happen to contain it.

Actually, since those shows all contain canned laughter for some very specific reasons - I gave two, but there are more - and rely on you to believe that it's there for no reason, that it isn't important, that it has no effect on your enjoyment of the show, I'd say you're focusing way too hard on the wrong aspects of the shows that 'happen' to contain it. Canned laughter gets people to laugh at shit that they wouldn't otherwise consider funny; that's the entire reason it's there. And it's still there because most people think they ignore it as they let it work on them.

Keep in mind that, of the over 100 people who are involved in the production of any given sitcom, there are maybe a few members of the crew who don't consider it their job to deliver you a brand. Not to entertain you. Just to get you hooked on a particular product, usually a product with some kind of simplified narrative attached, usually a narrative that plugs neatly into some prefab political message (this in ways different from those we consider obvious, since, again, the effect is ruined if we realize what's being done to us). I can never understand why people can be cynical about politicians only to turn around and let TV folks do the same damage to them. Maybe if politicians were funnier.

I really don't watch a great deal of TV. In the UK the quality of telly is shocking, it's cheap reality bollocks featuring either faded z-lister celebs (or ex-boyfriends of faded z-lister celebs) or annoying wastes of sperm and muscle tissue who want to be famous but actually have not dicernable talent or skill other than pinching other people's oxygen and wasting it!

The other thing that clogs the network are soap operas 7 days a week with repeats at the weekend just incase you were lucky enough to be out during the week when they were first on!

Add to that the constant showing of Arnie, Stephen 'fucking' Seagull or Jean Claude films on loop every week(yes channel 5 I'm looking at you) and these constant make over shows called 'Help Me Stop Looking Like a Fat Minger', 'I Can't Sell My House Cause I live In a Dodgy Area', 'Rummage Through My Loft So We Can Have A Car Boot Sale' or 'We Are Shit Parents Who Have No Parenting Skills So Our Children Are Unruly Reprobates And We Should Have Been Castrated So We Couldn't Breed, Quick Call in the Super Nanny' These sort of shows usually involve an 'expert' telling these people in a harsh brutal way that they are ugly or crap and then tries to show them how to change and become a better person!
Even worse are the attempts at emulating successful American shows!
Don't even get me started on Jeremy 'patronising' Kyle, hey Jerry Springer was so last century, we are so behind the times!
And please somebody tell me what the fuck is supposed to be funny about Catherine Tate???

When the adverts are on you don't get a rest bite as the adverts are all for people in debt or falling off ladders and waiting for that cheque for £8000.

Odds are If I watch anything it's usually a documentary of some sort, or a film.
With cable I've been watching old re-runs of 60's and 70's shows as nothing modern really interests me.

God I'm a boring old fart :D

I thought the same thing. then I got hooked. Plots are a little farfetched, but.... it's good tv.

Lately; J.R. falls off the wagon and drinks all the liquor and shit out of Josh's hotel mini-fridge while he waits to kill him for sleeping with Babe (JR's wife). Bianca instead comes in the room, sees JR is drunk, and tries to calm him down. Then her mother Erica comes in the room threatening J.R. to stay away from her family. Bianca and Erica block the door leading out of the room, so J.R. jumps out the window... btw, the room is about 3 stories high.
