Generally speaking, the following is true:

1. Metal musicians who happen to be Christian are fine or not fine in regular proportions.

2. Metal musicians who feel that their job in music is to spread Christianity, and hence make their music a literal salvo in the war on Satan, tend to deform the music in order to strengthen the message, which is almost always not good. Perhaps in even greater proportion than the reverse (Satanists making music as part of their war on God), if only because, for whatever reason, some Satanists innovate, whereas people who decide to proselytize Christianity through metal almost invariably copy (it makes sense to copy when you're spreading the word, since a familiar form is easier to appropriate and cliches are essentially artistic shorthand).

There are, of course, counterexamples (big one is Master of Reality), but that's true of almost anything.

When I was 12 years old, Zao's "Liberate Te Ex Inferis" was the album that got me started on metal. Compared to what I listen to now its relatively tame, but of course when I was 12 I thought it was absolutely the shit. I still listen to it occasionally for the nostalgic effects.

You've never been tortured with sound until you've had to endure Gospel Gangstaz. From my personal experiences of having played with christian musicians, being around bands that were christian, seeing lots of live shows ( I've still seen WAY more christian shows in my life than non-christian shows ), getting to have in-depth conversations with people who were signed, it became blatantly obvious that quality control that is of first concern in the secular arena is basically non-existant in christian metal/rock. Its not there because it does'nt have to be : A great number of people attending the shows and buying the cd's are going to listen to christian music whether it sucks or not. The pressure on christian bands to release quality material is just not there like it is in the secular arena. I remember reading HM Magazine, which never ever gave a bad review of any album, no matter how much they wanted to admit that it sucked. I listened to everything from Bloodgood to Living Sacrifice, and out of it all I can only think of a handful of albums that stick out in my mind ( that Zao disc being one ), and even then, they absolutely fucking pale in comparison to Reign In Blood, Chaosphere, Annihilation Of The Wicked ... the list goes on.

Then again, I have'nt really listened to a lot of christian metal in almost 6 years. Its drastically improved, what with As I Lay Dying and Extol, but I don't think I'll ever take christian metal as a whole seriously.

I know its a long drawn out post, but it really is something I feel strongly about. I've a total disgust for a subculture that absolutely thrives on banality.

all of these bands are just as good as anyone else in their genres if not better (sympathy, extol, and crimson moonlight make albums equal if not two times better than many secular acts!)

and the band im in are completely made up of christian members and we care ALOT about putting out very high quality music with a very high quality message. Take a listen to any of those bands i listed, youll be as surprised as i was when i first started listening to christian metal, considering i was a christian who listened to metal anyway i hadnt heard any metal with the message in it, and ill admit some bands were two or three times worse than their secular counterparts but certain bands were equal if not better...

plus anything HM puts out anymore about metal anymore is metalcore stuff, and telling a band they suck is tough man, instead HM just gave reviews with constructive criticism instead of just dissing the band like many magazines do nowadays.

Someone had mentioned Antestor. They are actually a black metal band from my country (because they didn't want to be confused as a satanic band, they prefer "sorrow metal"). They do sound black metal, but I'm not a big fan of theirs (although some songs are pretty dark and heavy and are ok). I am not a Christian, but I don't think it should matter about whether a band is a certain religion or not because metal is supposed to be about the music. The lyrics don't always make a song good. Not that it's wrong to incorporate your beliefs in it, that's what metal is here for.The guy who said all metal should be satanic is an idiot, but that's his opinion. Christian metal's just one of the many, many, many results of the Church realizing a millenium or so after the death of Christ that the world wasn't really about to end and that power had to be held in this world as well as reserved for the next. So Christianity tried to insinuate itself into all these worldly things and it ended up, trivially enough, with a Christian version of every existing bit of pop culture, co-opted at birth to fight against the forces of hell. Kinda boring to me.

The fascinating bit is that, if they really mean this shit (as opposed to most of our favorite bands, who with some exceptions really don't mean anything they write about), then why the hell are they so devoid of passion, of interest, of anything redeeming their fifth-rate hack jobs after the style of some band supposedly on the 'other side' of a cosmic battle they consider a joke?

Nothing wrong with non-offensive lyrics to great sounding music. However, when the method is to take a pre-packaged message and force it into whatever form happens to be in front of you, the result is often mediocre music. Death metal has some shitty lyrics that really couldn't be out-sucked by uninspired Christian platitudes, but the reason that we'll accept Cannibal Corpse's immature lyrics is that the music, which is the only thing readily digestible anyway in death metal, is actually of inspired, original, and of high quality.

So there's nothing wrong with Christian death metal in the abstract. But the fact is that it's always devised as salvos in the war between God and Satan, aiming to save people like us from the hell we've earned ourselves, and the people who make things in this way don't really care how good it is, because quality is not its reason to exist. This is why a lot of explicitly Christian films (The Omega Code) also suck. Not because it's impossible to have a good Christian film or good Christian music (we tend to forget that, for example, all of Bach is Christian music) - it's just that these people, rather than wanting to make something good to the glory of God, as Bach or the architects of cathedrals or any number of Christian artists have done, want to make something that proselytizes to adherents of this or that worldly popular art form as its reason to exist.

Of course, the reason that all sorts of thoroughly mediocre death metal bands are still praised while equally bad Christian ones are reviled has to do with prejudice. But there really aren't any excellent Christian death metal bands (there are very few excellent death metal bands to begin with), and that is at least in part due to the fact that being a good band has nothing to do with why these bands exist.

And most regular people will camp up CC lyrics. They're too discomforting not to provoke a laugh.

The lyrics on Master of Reality are pretty clearly the result of the same pressures that changed 'Walpurgis' to 'War Pigs.' But on the very next album we have lines like 'Got no religion' and 'Don't want no Jesus freak to tell me what it's all about.' Another album and we've got devout Christian teachings like 'God knows as sure as your dog knows.' If you're so interested in explanations about Sabbath, explain all that. I don't think they're a Satanic band, but aside from Iommi - who, again, wrote very few of the lyrics - they don't have any other religious affiliation, either.

I consider myself to be christian(not as much of a follower as I should be) and I play in a thrash metal band, we have a song called "Satan's Formation" that my bassist and vocalist wrote, I don't think much of it. We sing about destruction, anti-politics, war, and whatever else is brutal. It doesn't matter much, if I want to reach out to people with my beliefs I will just hang out with some fans after a show and talk to them about it if it gets to that subject.

Ha, Aeon is a very heavy band, but they are lacking in the lyrical department. If you want better anti-christian lyrics then look at some black metal bands. Aeon have a sense of humor about their music (the bluegrass influeced hidden track:love: ). Other than that, they are comparible to Deicide in their caveman-esque verses.

To me Satanism is a bastardized term that can mean way too many fucking things. I know some Satanists, and a few of them are very good people who I respect a lot. The thing is, I don't even think they know what they believe in. Is Satan as actual entity or just something to symbolize an affiliation with the darker side of reality and anti-Christian ideology?

As for the original subject on Christians in metal; I don't think very many Christians gravitate towards metal, and the few that do might eventually see life from a different perspective. I was raised a Christian. If it wasn't for Metal I would probably still be one. Listening to bands like Slayer and Deicide made me question the bible, and eventually I became a Nihilistic Atheist.

All metal bands bite other bands' style except the bands that created the style. Musical statements can't really be made anymore unless you get really far out there and wrtite extremely progressive material, but even then it has already been done. And I would say 50% of Christian metal bands I have talked to personally take the music just as seriously as the lyrics. I saw a technical death metal band this summer with Christian lyrics and they were super tight musically. One of the best bands I have ever heard. And your face is a load of incoherent bs, because you dismiss ideas without even considering them. If lyrics were all that mattered music in the instrumental form would either fail to exist or be extremely minimalistic in order to hear the lyrics correct?

I don't think you get what im saying. Most christian metal bands (at least the good ones), take the music equally as seriously if not more seriously than the lyrics. I remember extol saying they wanted people to listen to the music and dig that before they read the lyrics, but even just getting their music out was still important to them. I think you are generalizing all christian metal bands into one mindset.
