View Full Version : What Pick?

Ok, I've been playing guitar for awhile.l... but never really used a pick... Never could use them well when I first started out so I keep using my nail... I couldn't get any speed while using the pick..

But.... Slayer use picks... and if they can play that fast with em.. then it must be possible :)

So what pick do you guys use? (and what do slayer use?!)

I've been using picks since the beginning cause to me picks are the only way to play as fast as slayer or any other fast music like that. I use some Dunlop picks, always heavy....about 1.0 mm thick (don't know what that is in inches). I also use Steve's picks, that's a local music store here, don't know if there's any in the states. I always use heavy picks cause i find they grip and tug at the strings better.......i've tried thin picks, and they flop around too much and bend too easily. I don't like those.

Now, as for Slayer......i'll just takea look at my trusty Slayer tab book.....both Hanneman and King use D'Andrea picks, medium gauge. Also, King uses .009-.042 strings, while Hanneman uses .009-.046 strings. I thought they'd use thicker strings for their speed and shit, but i guess they both like the thin ones. Ah well......there you have it!

I use Jim Dunlop Tortex Medium (75mm) pics,or other words Dime's picks.
And I use 54-12 gauge strings for my Bb and Fb tunings.

I use the same pics for my 9-46 gauge strings tuned to Eb and C#

these pics never break at the tip,you all should try them the only thing that wears out is the logo on it.;)

6MORBID......the picks you use, do they have like a soft feeling to them? Or are they shinny?

Cause i use 2 different Dunlop picks, they both have turtles on them, and one if shinny and kind of purple-y coloured, while the other is soft feeling, not shinny at all, very dull....and it's blue. But my picks are thicker than yours, so they're probably different looking too.

6MORBID6ANGEL6
2001-10-03, 20:44
I dunno why the hell everyone says that!
everyone says those picks feel soft....everyone!
i cant feel the softness in them at all
Actually there a powdery bright neon yellow color.and yes with the turtle on it.

memnoch
2001-10-03, 20:52
They do look powdery. They feel soft compared to the shinny ones. The shinny ones stick more to your fingers.

6MORBID6ANGEL6
2001-10-03, 21:02
hmm, well,i guess that's true, but again, they dont feel all that soft to me.

Father Death

I use yellow Dunlop Tortex picks too. .73mm. I didn't know that's what Dime uses. Interesting. I guess that means I should be able to play just like him, right? :p

Zakk Wylde uses some heavy-ass bastards. I'm not sure of the exact thickness, but they're fat. His pinch harmonics are that much more amazing when you consider the friggin' manhole cover he's using. (I say this because it's been my experience that the lighter the pick, the easier it is to do pinch harmonics).

I us Dunlop tortex .58mm and .60mm in other words the purple ones and the orange ones. Everything I play is extreamly fast mostly "Tromolo picking" so I dont like the heavey picksfor two reasons. First they have no flexibility to them so somtimes you get a litte hung up and secondly its alot easier to snap a string. But I like all picks they just have different uses and believe it or not they accually make different sounds depeding on the thickness.

And a big point to make is the fact that this guy is used to playing finger style and he neads advice on how to get used to picks. I can tell you from my personal experiance that it was alot easier to learn with thiner picks like .50's. Over time increase the guage as you progress. Trust me it will be alot less frustrating.

I use Dunlop's black 1mm picks. They're more solid and hard than the thinner ones which makes fast picking is a lot easier. Thin picks are too soft.

I used to use the Dunlop Tortex 2mm. Those big thick bastards are great if you use mainly down-strokes. These days I use smaller picks for better control and easier alternate picking, the Dunlop Jazz III's.

memnoch

Holy shit that's thick. I think my 1mm's are thick as hell. I couldn't imagine using a 2.

i use the yellow dunlop tortex 73mm, and the black dunlop 1mm, also. i dont like real heavy picks. the medium ones are easier to play fast with, and easier for stuff like alternate picking tremolo picking etc. i think those are good picks ;) it is also hard to keep control of your picking with them i think, and it is easier to snap a string i think. they also feel more comfortable to use. but thats just my opinion.

memnoch
2001-10-09, 10:30
Well, i've always used thick picks and i've never snapped any of my strings.....maybe i don't play as violently as others do, but i've never broken any strings off my guitar. Only once off my sister's, but she had extremely thin and VERY old strings (maybe 4-5 years old).

walpurgis
2001-10-09, 19:33
I've broken strings with all kinds of picks, but I try to use medium to light picks most of the time when I'm playing a six-string. If I'm playing a song that I use a pick for the bass on, I usually try to find the thickest one I can.

death_rattle89
2001-10-13, 00:41
yeah if i was using bass strings i would prolly use real thick picks.

your sisters strings werent changed for 4 or 5 years? thats a real long time to go without changing strings.

memnoch
2001-10-13, 01:15
Yeah, maybe i exagerrated a bit, but it was probably no less than 2 years......which is still a hell of a long time. Although, she never played her guitar, never took care of it either. It was a cheap stratocaster copy by some brand i forget.

death_rattle89
2001-10-13, 01:29
yeah i know a kid that used to own a stratocaster copy.
i dont think its to not take care of your guitar for that long. i also woudnt go that long without playing it.

Hah your little wimpy 2 mm is nothing compared to my Jim Dunlop U.S.A. 3 point Oh mm pick. THough I only use that on occasion I moslty use my black dunlop 2mm the smaalest I'll go is 1mm after that my picking is for shit.

Becker rules
2001-12-03, 17:56
I use 1mm preferably with dimples (not on me on the pick) for easier grip.

Longjocks
2001-12-09, 07:42
My problem with picks is the fact that I get very clammy hands. A mate of mine actually calls me "the string killer". I don't snap 'em but I dirty them up a treat real quick. But to get back on track... I lose grip too easily.

I've tried different plastic. The 2mm ones I used had a good grip for example, but they didn't glide across the string as well as I wanted. My current Jazz III's only have the writing to grip. I've also tried some other Dunlops that have a rough 'grip' in the middle and a nice, smooth-sided tip but because they're a hard textured plastic the grip doesn't do much.

I need a pick that has a firm yet flexible texture and comparible thickness of the Jazz III's (around 1mm). It needs to be of a small design like the Jazz III's as I'm used to them and find them good for accurate picking. And finally I need a center area that has a plastic with plenty of grip.

I guess I'll just have to continue my ongoing quest.

Dunlop Jazz III all the way. I could get harmonics on em best, and soloing is really sweet with em. I have like 3000 of those fuckers, it's all I use.

YES, Jim Dunlop 1mm picks are my favorite! Although I am having some trouble with alternate picking, only on the light speed solo, parts so I might try a thinner pick for that so I can get use to it and then switch back to 1mm!:D

2 mil dunlop stubby's here. i find that my speed increases when i use thicker picks, it takes a bit to get used to it, but afterwards i can do tremolo picking at about 300-350 beats a minute, i think. i'm just guessing, maybe its more

y would u wanna pick "just cause slayer uses em"? anyway....i use jim dunlop tortex's .88mm and 1.0mm......smooth not powdery...and i cut off a little of the pick near the top so i can do fast pick tapping "like in the solo One-by metallica", and i cut up a rubberband and glue it on the pick for grip....MY PICKS WILL DOMINATE!!:p

I use the thick ass tortex 1.5mm that come to a point at the end. These seem to work very well for extreme tremelo picking. Somtimes I use smaller jazz picks - both are good for pinch harmonics.

I figure, the bigger the better as picks go, gives a heavier sound and they don't bend at all so you know where the pick is. I use those purple dunlops with the turtles on them. 2mm. And Never use thin picks. I was playing a misfits song, and the pick just tore in half. Fucking ridiculous.

I use Dunlop purple for electric and acoustic both. If you're are going to be playing drum circle full chord strumming shit for the amusement of stoner philosophers then a really flimsy pick works well.

Mostly I don't bother to pick up my acoustic unless I'm going to work on finger picking or flamenco strumming, etc...

My first few months of playing long ago....I simply used the picks I was given an handfull of when purchasing the guitar.....they were all thick and rigid as nickles......very soon after I was on E-Bay and bought 2 Mick Mars picks...about 3 dollars each.
When they came...they were super thin.....very flexable....I tried one out and everything changed for me....
They didnt last long....cracked....so I found some Nylon Jim Dunlops that were as thin and flexable.......it's all I use now.....they last a really long time.

He uses imprinted 1.5mm Jim Dunlops which are probably worn to hell or smoking after his solos. Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, and Dave Mustaine all seem to use the green .88mm Dunlop Tortex ones.
