View Full Version : Death Metal Vocals.
Hello. I'm new to these forums, as well as new to death metal vocals. I recently started screaming/growling, but I can't scream at all and while attempting to growl, I cannot get that gurgling, rough sound. I decided to find out more before I hurt my chords trying. I'm 16, but my voice is quite deep already, so I don't think voice maturity is the problem. I'm not going to give up this early. I barely know what the hell I'm doing. Tips? Advice? Is there another thread for this kidn of thing?
With the gutterals, what you need to do is kind of tense your throat. This is how i got to do my shitty gutterals...
Make a chewbacka sound, making it rough by tensing your throat, then with your mouth/tongue slowly work your way down in pitch to as low as you can while holding it for a few seconds. Then rinse and repeat whenever you can.
The chewbacca vocals are basicly the "shape" your throat should take.
You will sound like a retard at first (i did anyway) but it will get better in a couple of weeks or so.
Also, just sing along to tracks you like, remembering to stop when your throat starts to hurt. Just have fun with it.
It would probably help if someone did a recording of chewbacca - death vocals, just to give this fellow a good idea of what it should sound like. I have a cold so, i wont today :(
Anyway, this is how I developed my vocals, and it took maybe a month and a bit to get it to the sound i wanted to. From there its just about how long you can do it for without hurting your throat. Remember to drink water :)

Thanks, Hez. I won't be so concerned with how stupid I sound now. Like with anything, this is gonna take practice I guess. A recording would be helpful, though... if someone could take the time
:D
Iam also having some problems i cant really scream for that long my screams/growls sound like Circle of Dead Children..Any Tips would be aprrecaited
il post a recording as soon as this cold is over. Probably tommorow :)

um, you said about growling. there was a topic ( named '101 screaming/growling advices' or so). thats topic where i learned how to growl. anyway, my advice is like in that post - try moving your voice box up and grunt while its in that position. should work :P
ok, i dont really care...

all in all..it just takes lots of practice...but at the same time don't overdo it. Build up on it slowly . Give your Vocal cords time to adapt to the extreme pressure being put on them.

That was extremely lame, no offense.

Sounds like I'm doing the right sound, though. Mine is alot deeper.
i was just trying to show you how to do it, some people cant do chewbacca impersonations.
Ive posted this already ages ago, but this is my vox + bass on some teamspeak server, i wasnt recovering from a cold here (which i still am now), so it should sound a bit better.

Yo. I've been doing vocals for about 14 years now. I'm currently in a band and do vocals and guitar. Just do like the one guy said above, tensing your throat for chewbacca like sounds, etc. I would listen to several death metal bands for influence as well,..eg..Obituary, Deicide, Napalm death. Those bands gave me great influence as far as that goes. If you experience problems, try some green tea and hot chocolate for soothing your throat. Also, as you do your vocals, breath deep and try to use your stomach/diaphragm if possible. You'll get used to after a while. Like before, practice makes perfect. I suggest not going more than 30 minutes at a time for first starters. You'll wear out your vocal chords. Also, avoid smoking(in case you do). These factors will help you out considerably...

I looked through the thread search thing and this seems to be the best place to put this question. You see I can do growls ok, not too great or anything, but they arent gutteral enough. not brutal enough. I would like to do my growls like Muhammed Suiçmez from necrophagist, how does he get that insanly brutal sound in his while still maintaining the deep guteralness? any tips or advice would be greatly apriciated, thank you.
Metal fucking rules :vampire:
its basicly been covered above us dude, the gutteral sound comes from the tensing of your throat and the shaping of your tongue/mouth for different sounds or whatever.

What volume would you say his are?
I can get the tone, but I'm unsure of the volume. I can't imagine it being that loud.

Guys here's a video I made some time ago, and I just uploaded it. It ain't super, but turn up your volume and listen carefully to my voice (don't mind the sometimes skipping of the voice, I was sick at the time). These kind of vocals don't hurt at all and all you do is make a O shape with your mouth breathe with your diaphragm, DONT CLOSE ANYTHING in your throat, and just let the air rip out with your adams apple low. (sorry for my bad english, but I'm trying to point out that this way will néver éver hurt you in anyway and can still sound brutal.) Corpsegrinder uses the same technique.

(PS I'll make a better vid later on, I've improved since this vid ;-) )

You mean, you do it like regular growl but you just make your throat tighter (like letting less air come through it) ?
PS. Bones98, where are you when i need you? :D

And that's also a great way to destroy your voice and throat. Have you heard CG now? He sounds like a dying horse.

Sing from ya gut. If it hurts ya throat ya doing it wrong. I was singing dominate by Morbid Angel today and i pretty much nailed it and my throat felt fine afterwards. it sounds weird and its hard to learn but if you tense ya gut and growl from below ya throat you'll find that you can hold growls for longer and it doesn't hurt.
