View Full Version : How readily available is metal where you are from?
I'm in the north of England and it's so shit. All the music shops over here have the smallest metal sections that are just full of Kerrang's latest fads. Sometimes though I'll be surprised by a few of the albums like when I bought 1349 form Music Zone once.
Is it different for other countries or are we all forced to use the internet for all our metal needs like I am?

The media play over here (before it closed down) had decapitated, Iced earth, and nevermore CDs readily available. They even had Cannibal corpse which is sorta amazing considering the gruesome nature of their cover art and how mainstream the store was. But tower records is where i get most of my shit. They have all of Immortal's albums, starting with pure holocaust and every album since then. They even have a few obscure black metal/death metal bands I have never heard of.

here in upstate new york we have a branch of retail stores called FYE that have a pretty big selection of stuff, pretty much everything on metal blade and other large labels. but the cds are usually 18.99. otherwise theres a local used shop that sometimes gets rare stuff....
so its not very available here. certainly nothing old is easy to get

I usually go to HMV which is just downtown from where I live. They have everything from Iced Earth to Anal Blast. But for some hard to find stuff like Ghoul, Impaled, Lord Gore and what not I usually just order online.

Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Immortal, Nile, Strapping Young Lad.
If it isn't on the shelves, it's out of stock.

Yeah, HMV sometimes has good shit..but I usually order online as well(usually saving $10-20 on each cd) and obviously because of the selection online.
Usually dm/bm/thrash albums can only be found used at smaller record stores(cdplus, cdheaven, randomplay), most of the time used...even then it's usually a bitch to find something.

i just found a metal store down here in texas with a section devoted to metal. they had quite the collection and shit load of cool shirts (all in black. whowouldathunk it?). on a scale from puritan (0) to norway (10), we are about a 6 or so. if i want something pretty rare, i usually have to order it online (like drudkh and most nsbm).
however, the store i previously mentioned did have some nokturnal mortum and leviathan. that was a nice suprise.
This should be in Chit Chat.
The major cities in California are covered by major and independent record shops. Around me theres about 2 shops, Bionic Records (its a local chain), with the majority of the stock being metal, and one shop, Dark Realm, that only sells metal, although its mostly Black Metal. Theres also Ameoba Records which is the biggest fucking music store I've ever been in. They have three locations (LA, Berkeley, San Fran.)and two of them are two stories. I rarely buy CDs from stores anymore unless its something I need immediately. Buying online or at shows is more convenient and cheaper.
I have to buy everything from the internet

?? Your location says Finland...I don't understand.
Well I know one shop in my town that sells some death metal but thats about it. There are free record shops everywhere, you can get the mainstream metal there. Of course I could order the cds through them, but I'm not paying 20€ each.

The north of England is the home of doom! When i've been in York i haven't had too much trouble getting ahold of some titles, granted not the extreme brutal death metal stuff, but not too bad a selection :)

I think the only places in town that sell cd's now besides walmart and Kmart is Slappy's Liquor and Music and I've heard their selection is pretty crap and Music N Games which sells used stuff. There's nothing here really.

Four or five good record stores in Sydney.
That being said, if you're posting on THE INTERNET about how you can't get any music, then you're probably ignoring a really simple solution to your problem.

cdplus is in Quebec, I presume? It's not very good, some alright stuff. However, not many "underground" bands.

theres a place on guadalupe st in austin that was one of the most impressive music stores ive seen period, they also do shows, dont they? i forget the name of the joint. i havent been there in like 3 years.
providence has a place that specializes in hardcore, noise, grind and all metal. i can special order anything thru them if they dont have what i need.
singer of my band works at the local newbury comics, which is decent because the employees are all into similiar stuff im into.
EDIT: nevermind the place in texas im refering to closed down 3 years ago, i just looked it up. it was called sound exchange, i believe

Four or five good record stores in Sydney.
JB Hifi...Post-Mortem Records...Utopia?...Beatdisc?...HMV?...
I'd say the first 2 are the only decent ones.
Utopia is remarkably dystopian, with all the emo's and other pretentious fags running around and hanging out the front, and the ridiculously high prices...
Beatdisc has good prices, and never what I want,
HMV is about as metal as Cradle of Filth.
So then FBS, I'd say only 2 decent record stores, possibly 3... Unless you know any more?
Metal in Sydney is good i'd say.

we usually have a few shops with readily available mainsteam shit, like In Flames, Lamb of God, etc, however because Hardcore is such a huge fucking scene out here, you see more screamo/emo/hardcore bullshit CD's than any metal.
I will say I found some Krisiun CD's at the local CD shop which made me happy.
I know they carry metal at the CD warehouse a few miles away...the guy that runs the shop is a metal head...His car is plastured with band stickers :P

The nearest cd store (I mean the good cd store) is about 25 km away. :p But that's not a problem, because they're are pretty close to the train station. Metal is actually very easy to get here. I've never had to order any metal cd's. (though I ordered one because I was too lazy to go somewhere for just one cd, but you could have find it easily from normal cd store) There is one cd store that is only for metal. There is almost everything. Some very old metal cd's too.
There is a local shop here run by a couple, oh, well into their fifties. They keep I think at least a fifth of the store floor for metal.
Because it's a local shop, and the couple are nice and cool, I prefer to make my CD purchases there and the majority of my metal collection comes from there; including bands like Nightwish, Black Sabbath, Amorphis, Dio, Iron Maiden, Kreator, Opeth, Judas Priest, Guns'n'roses and Megadeth. So yea, if you ever happen to pass by Ängelholm in north western Skåne, your're in luck. They keep it cheap too, compared to many others, and will also order CDs for you, if you can overcome their many warnings of the extra cost.
Oh yea...
Megadeth, Sabbath and Dio have their very own slot
Korn and Slipknot very simply put do not

The metal departments of the stores I used to frequent are shrinking and are being moved to the back. There are 2 alternative music stores and one mainstream music store where I get metal (the mainstream store has more metal than the other ones and more bands because the bassist of one of the more prominent metal bands works there). There is also a small secondhand store I go to which has some rare metal sometimes. Overall, semi-rare bands tend to be available but certain bands I love are almost impossible to find (Kalmah, Insomnium, etc).

maybe it would be surprising, but my local hastings carries lots of good stuff. ive found these and more at hastings: Kalmah, Dragonlord, Wintersun, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Astarte, Graveworm, Asguard, The Crown, all Dark Tranquillity, FALKENBACH!!!, Einherjer, Thy Serpent, Cadacross, Norther, Agathodaimon, Naglfar, Siebenburgen. I was most surprised by the appearance of Falkenbach and Einherjer. At first i was surprised to see Wintersun, but then, it is quite renowned, so maybe its not a shock. anyway ive had many happy trips back from that store. also, ive seen lots of the heavier death metal bands you guys talk about at that store.
EDIT: oh yes, for whoever doesnt know, I live at the bottom of Texas. I heard there is a better selection upstate, but i dont really believe the person who told me that, and ive been there too and found less.
