replacing nut

I have a gibson, special with a standard nut that needs to be replaced. I was thinking, just run down to the local guitar center and pick one up. My question is how to clamp it down or whatever until the glue hardens? Elmers wood glue is cool right? Should I look for any special type of nut?

Also curious, about how much does a nut and set of machine heads cost?

"a set of machineheads" can cost you $10-$1000. Why do you need them anyway? As for the nut, i replaced mine last summer because i cracked it. I bought some crap called "guitar glue" and used a mahogany shim to slightly raise the new nut to where i want the action. To hold it down, i just reinstalled my guitar strings and tightened them down.

^^ A couple of the machine heads are loose, though not nearly as bad when strings are installed, but I think its contributing to the buzzing. How much was the guitar glue? Yeah, I was thinking about just installing the strings. I'll probably end up doing that unless someone at guitar center has a better idea.......

get one of those cool roller nuts. i broke the nut on my old yamaha and when i replaced it i just sanded it down to the desired hight. i ruined one by sandin it too much though. too lazy to glue it so i just let the strings hold it in. cant bend though haha :p

$1000 :eek: What kind of tuners cost that much? The most I have ever seen them sell for were $200 for a set for LSR. I had them on a Jackson KV-1 years ago and they were pretty nice.

So, should I be looking for any particular kind as far as the nut goes: material, size, etc. I bought a pair a string from GC, zack wylder strings like 10, 13, 17 and bigger 456 strings 38 4X anf 60 I think and the string didn't even fit in the nut? is that something idle, thicker top strings, I'm guessing it would obvioiusly have a thicker sound.

Also with the machine heads, it doesn't matter? can I just get the whatever cheapest ones they have? recommendations?

i dont think a guitar would like to have a 60 tuned to E
