hi, i need some help on my guitar skills. right now im pretty much in to slayer and can play songs like angel of death but i'm no where near being able to play for instance the verse riff in silent scream. It may be faster, but i cant even play it slowly. im reffering to this tab:
http://www.metaltabs.com/tab/841/

The tab seems pretty correct, from what i can hear in the recording. My problem is the string skipping.

-9-8---------9------------|
-7-7-----------10---------|
-----0-0-0-0------0-0-0-0-|

now because (atleast in my browser) of the font it looks screwed up but u get the picture. how in hell do i jump to the D string and play that '9' note? ive just played four '0's fast as hell and if im gonna hit the D string i cant avoid E and A. Ive all the time thought muting them by holding my left "pointing finger" (sorry english isnt my native language) loosely on E and A was the solution, but it doesnt seem to work very well and still E and A are going to make some noise, on the album u cant even sense that. also, what do i preferrably down-pick and what do i up-pick?

This riff is just an example, i have trouble with all songs that have this string skipping. sorry for bugging you with so much but here is a riff wich i can half manage, verse riff of song: necrophiliac
|--4-------4-------5-------5-------2-------2---------
|----222222--222222--222222--222222--222222--222222-- ETC
again the font screws it, the A string notes should of course be between the "222222" sets. This i play by hitting both E and A strings when i come to the '4', '5' and '2's, but muting the E string with my finger. it sounds pretty good but still the E string makes some noise (not much though but i cant hear any on the recording). after the part i have here, instead of one of the '4's its a '4' on the D string as a variation, and thats really hard to get to sound good.

So what am i doing wrong. have i been approaching this in a totally wrong way or what? please need help!!! I would really appriciate it since i feel its a barrier in my development ( or something^.^)
Thanks / Pillows

with a little practice.

to slash down to the 9th note, don't seem that difficult.

what you can do is refer that 9th note to another note , probably the 3rd note on the 3rd string, maybe that's easier for you to play.

but I think how it stands there, is the easiest way.

why starting all those difficult songs, when you're just beginning with playing rhytm?

referring to the last riff you wrote,

maybe you can listen to Dark Tranquillity - Zodijackal Light (if i spelled it right)
goes almost the same.

maybe i just suck but the problem is its so damn fast i cant "lift" my hand above E and A strings, i have to hit them too. the loose E notes are up and down strokes at a sick tempo (atleast compared to what i know), and when the fourth one is hit with an upstroke theres no time to lift your hand and such. or? do you know the song, to me im not that much of a beginner but i find this hard. u mean im a beginner cause i cant play that or what

i dunno if im tired or what but somehow i cant make my self clear in what im trying to say :p the problem is NOT the speed, i can manage that and even if i play it at HALF speed i cant manage the string skipping! is muting the other strings anything near what i should do? thx again

p.m. p.m. p.m.

try to play it like this first, slow, then pump up the speed bit by bit,
then put a little more notes (0-0-0 , i think there only 2 or 3 notes instead of 4) on the E string .

(0-0-0 , i think there only 2 or 3 notes instead of 4) on the E string .
i think your right. i play it with triplet and when it comes to the 9th and 10th on the
D and A string respectively i play it up stroke on the two string (kind of a sweep picking on two string).

To my ear it really sound like triplet....But i'll try tonight with 4 notes and i'll listen
to the song and tell you what it is.
Pretty sure it's triplet...

thanks for your help (both). i listened to it and atleast at the beginning where drums arent so dominant ;) it sounds like triplets but sometimes 4. triplets make it a lot easier since ive got time to jump then :). still the problem remains in other songs such as altar of sacrifice... BTW THAT IS A RAW SONG!! grrr!!

You just have to practice string skipping man. I had that problem when i first started playing guitar and i couldn't understand how you could simply "skip" a bunch of strings without hitting any others.

With practice though, it comes to you and right now i don't even think about string skipping, it's second nature. Just keep practicing skipping the E and A strings.

on the riff here:
-9-8---------9------------|
-7-7-----------10---------|
-----0-0-0-0------0-0-0-0-|

I would do a downstroke on the "9", then upstroke on the "10" just so have less picking hand movements. Your hand will already be moving downwards to hit the 9, so just hit it as your going down.....then naturally you'll have to come "up" to hit the A string, so just hit it on your way up, and resume your position on the E string and continue doing open E notes.
