I AM in a damn rut

Im in a rut. wat do I do, I cant out of it. I tried figuring stuff out, learning stuff, and doing fingering excercises. ITS NOT WORKING!!!!

the easiest way to get out of a rut is to do something weird with the guitar, if your a metal fan stop listening to metal for 2 weeks or so promise yourself you wont play metal, now go and listen to dance music or something and jam with and play that, youll learn much more then just learning a new slayer lick, youll learn a whole new approach to music both in structure and note choice.
Youll begin to have it rub off in your playing and start to use different intervals then what metal uses, youll also start to play happier music and youll bring those ideas to your playing and then back to metal.

On another note dont try too hard to be a great guitarist, playing guitar too much to the point of being sick of it can cause a rut and make you lose interest in music altogether. I can play most Yngwie and that stuff and theres still times I feel like Im not advancing and Im rehashing the same old stuff over again when I practice. so I go on a non metal diet, last time I bught a Pink album put it in my comp ripped the tracks and recorded solos over them its fun and youll grow to like other music making yourself a better musician.

sometimes not playing for a while can rilly rilly help
go climb a hill and enjoy some nature
that sometimes works for me

don't force anything, ideas come naturally and when they're good and ready.


there are no drugs that can make you write a good song.
there is no alcohol that can make you write good lyrics.


reason is, if you're drinkin or on drugs then an idea will naturally come to you if it wants to. if you're drinking or on drugs with the intention of milking a song/riff/lyric out of it you aint gonna get shit.


stop thinking about it. sit down with the guitar, close your eyes and it'll come out.

it'll happen when you're eatin dinner

Its not really about writing stuff, its more about being able to rip through solos.
Im just not as good as I use to be. I figured out the gets me through solo, but I cant play it perfect. Oh well,

If its that bad, go and buy a good guitar video. Someone who you dont know TOO much about, but are interested in. Sure, itll cost ya some, but it will be worth it if it kickstarts your guitar playing again!

heres an idea, smash your guitar up, when your done. sit down and dont move. wait until you start to twitch. make sure its at the point where your whole body is squirming. then go to a guitar shop and play.

Here is the best thing you can do: Just sinply take a break. Take a couple of weeks off. Trust me, I just did and I came back a much happier and better player.

DON'T GO AND LISTEN TO DANCE MUSIC OR ANYTHING, THAT SUCKS, INSTEAD, TRY PLAYING SOMETHING THAT IS AT A DIFFERENT TEMPO THAN THAT, IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, THAN KEEP LISTENING TO METAL, BUT FOR A DAY OR TWO DON'T PLAY, WRITE LYRICS, THEN GO BACK WITH THE THOUGHTS IN MIND OF WHAT THE LYRICS WOULD BE LIKE WITH A GOOD RIFF AND JUST PLAY IMPROV FOR A FEW MOMENTS, THEN YOU'LL PROBABLY BE OUT OF YOUR RUT!
