hey, Im learning Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee from Nuno Bettencourt, and at this part:
--5-8--4-7--5-8--4-7--5-8--6-9--5-8--4-7-----
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
I cant hit the second notes of the pairs because I fling my pinky to far from the fretboard. My question: What exercises are there to keep me from doing that?

Just practice your chromatic scale very carefully and pay great attention to the posture of your pinky. Some people just naturally do that and it doesn't affect the way they play, such as Laiho. His pinky flies wildly a lot during faster runs but it doesn't seem to affect his playing.

Go look at buckethead play--his left hand barely moves. Try to have: 4 nicely curved fingers, your hand perpendicular to the guitar neck (of course this doesn't really apply near the guitar headstock, cause that would be too much strain), and your fingers look like they're not moving.
When practicing, try keeping all fingers on the fretboard. Example, when you press 3rd finger down, fingers 1 & 2 should also be down.

Fuck around with that (diminished 5th?). Its awesome for pinky co-ordination and strength building. Plus it sounds uber grim.

I already do that. And I know what you mean about Buckethead. Thats what im trying to do. Less distance equals more speed :vampire:
ILikeRiffs - Ya, i do a bunch of legoto/trill exersises with it.
OpethFan- Thanks for the scale, il try it. (Edit) Haha, wait, thats a part of the song :p
