holy crap these guys are good. i bought "V-the new mythology suite", it kicks ass.
these guys are the closest i can find to Dream Theater.
they've got excellent keyboard use and catchy choruses.
i gotta stop listening to "Remember Yesturday" by hammerfall so i can here more of Symphony X.
any other SX fans here?
if you like dream theater you really should check thses guys out....

That's why I've always said symphony x has a better guitarist than dream theater dude, I've never heard john petrucci palm mute as fast as symphony X's guitarist. I also think Michael Romeo just flat out owns petrucci. If you like symphony x u must get "Divine Wings Of Tragedy " It is a must among symphony x fans.

To each his own, i suppose.
romeo only plays classical shite, while petrucci can not only play classical, but jazz, blues, and probably other shat.

 No. Romeo can play tons more cool stuff. I'm sick of hearing how everyone thinks DT's john petrucci is the greatest, He's not. I'm not saying Romeo is, but John is far from it.

As far as overall technical talent, Dream Theater is.

no matter what you think, it seems like LaBrie practiced a lot to get that voice. i think pasi from amorphis is really good, but he cant get the depth like labrie. labrie can sing with a really girly voice which i think really fits. if you wanna here him at his best, listen to Strange Deja Vu, Losing Time( the last track of Six Degrees), and A Change of Seasons at about the 13 minute mark.
i dont think hetfield has that great of a voice. i like mustaine better
theatre of tragedy has good vocalists. i love assembly!

Actually if u wanna ask me who has the best voice IMO it would be jon bon jovi and steve perry. Those guys voices are really really strong.

Yes, and I still stand by my statement.
There are about 5 Symthony-X songs that kick ass, easily up to DT level, like:
Accolade and Accolade II
Communion and the Oracle
The Odyssey
Egypt
the rest really don't do that much for me. about 90% of DT songs are some of the best songs ever written IMHO!
I dig Symphony X, saw them with Blind Guardian and Onward in L.A. a couple years back. Very good live band.

ive heard these guys, but the vocals throw me off, i like the music very much though
I have Symphony X's self titled album and I have The Divine Wings of Tragedy which I both like.

well theres only one guitarist better (i think) thats Yngwie. i learn of him after symphony X.... Clearly Yngwie is Michael's indspiration... but who gives a F**k, cool music

In my "top 10 people i dont know but hate anyway" bon jovi is number 1.
i love dream theater, not heard SX but i think i will now that i know theyre good.
no, in truth there are hundreds of better guitarists than michael romeo, and even a few better than malmsteen, for example paul gilbert, rusty cooley, rafael bittencourt etc etc, romeo is good buthis technique and shape are too simply structured and slow
but symphony x are an amazing band fair due's
labrie's vocals are a lot better than allen's.........then again, labrie's vocals are better than anyone's.......
Except maybe Bruce Dickinson. This guy sings like no other. Literally the most epic voice I've ever heard. Iron Maiden is just that good. I'm not sure if Dickinson took singing lessons though...I know Dream Theater's LaBrie did.

This thread is pretty old, but whatever.
I get annoyed with Labrie, because his voice is quite gay. I don't care if he took lessons, that doesn't help him. If you want good prog vocals, pretty much search anywhere else.
Halford sings better..
oh...
DONT DIG UP OLD USELESS THREADS TO START A DISCUSSION WITH A MEMBER THAT HAS LONG LEFT THE METALTABS COMMUNITY!

Romeo is a good guitarist but The band sucks as a whole. Prog sucks as a whole. James Labrie is a hole.
Too fucking cheesy for me.

Prog does not suck, Labrie just sucks. What are you basing this "prog sucks" on? Symphony X's cheese and Dream Theater's vocals/cheese? I notice you are voting in the song survivors, and Opeth is technically progressive metal.

I know Opeth is progressive Death Metal. But for me every single prog band I have heard has sucked, everygrey, sonata artica, this one band that starts with a k, dream theater, symphony X. I have a friend who used to like prog and the way everything is put together just for me makes me want to go out and listen to rap music.

well thats the way it usually works, you want good guitaring and the music ends up cheesy as shite

First, Sonata is power metal. Nevermore is prog, do you like them? Check out Pain of Salvation:
http://www.painofsalvation.com/band.htm
Follow that link and then click on samples on the left. The thing with this band is that it takes a while to sink in...so you'll probably just dismiss it as crap on the first listen. Listen to "Used" and "! (Foreword)" a few times at least.
