View Full Version : Some questions about re-conditioning my acoustic.

So I have an old acoustic i want to fix up as a random project.
I plan on removing all frets, sanding the whole thing down. Replacing the tuning machines, painting or staining a design onto the body, and customising the inlays.
THe thing is I want to make a fretless acoustic, just to see what happens. Will it work? I was thinking i could fill the fret slots with some kind of liquid wood then flattening it off.
Then I would re-coat it, not too sure what to use for this though. Do I need anything special?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

You could use wood filler for the fret slots. I'm not sure if theres something special that you're gonna have to get for the bridge and/or nut though.

yeah thats what i figured i would have a problem with, i may actually have to get a whole new bridge all together for it, because the last one broke off.
Also would having a fretless make bends fucking hard?

In regard to the fretboard,i would rip the old one off,and get a fretboard blank and attach it.

I dont really want to spent much money, im really doing this for the hell of it. Its not a good enough guitar to begin with to bother with replacing anything more than the basics.
You could just file the fuck outa the frets, may cost you alot of time and blisters though..

I removed the frets just then with some pliers, they came out so easily. Now i need to get a whole lotta sand paper and get rid of all the coat and blemishes ect.

If its got nylon strings then it'll make bends harder but not impossible. But really you don't really need bends when you've got a fretless.

Fill the fret slots with some black dyed epoxy and youll have some markers for you to follow and I would recommend coating the fretboard in a layer of epoxy else your going to ruin the wood.
