What do you think is the coolest bass riff, ever? and by whom?
walpurgis
2002-07-28, 10:42
I don't know if it's my absolute favorite, but if you crank a distortion pedal onto a bass and play the main parts to Motorhead's Orgasmatron, it's just purely fucking sweet, even as simple as it is :D
Mainly they are on Swervedriver's Raise album...
Adi Vines knew how to control those four stings... Too bad he don't play in a band anymore :(
Iron Maiden - Wrathchild
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the opera
Racer X - scarified (in a moment has an incredible bass solo)

Shouldn't be hard to find...Motorhead is awesome :)

You do know that Lemmy uses distortion right? Motorhead's version starts with him just playing it on bass...
Tattered
2002-08-08, 13:02
Oh right..
shouldnt be hard to work out i guess..but yeah its quite a cool riff
they havent got any motorhead tabs on here which im dissapointed at
they have some at mxtabs but they only have ace of spades and play the game
walpurgis

I don't know if they have the bass tabs, but you can just basically copy the guitar part, I think that's what Lemmy does.

On the word of ''Fun to play'' i can play basically all of Anesthesia by metallica now..and the pedal makes it sound even more beastly, its just it gets harder when the drums enter, on the last part of the solo..but through pain and agony im gonna finish it no-matter what:D
walpurgis
2002-08-08, 14:01
I envy you. Anasthesia is fuckin sweet. I'd be able to play the whole thing, I know I physically could do it, I just don't have the patience to sit and try the same parts over and over again then remember it all in order. A fatal musician's flaw :(
Tattered
2002-08-09, 11:25
I know what you mean..it does get annoying..when u learn a new part of the song, and then you have to go through it again to remember that part included in the bits of the song u already knew..but yeah, u need a lot of patience..and skill;)

dude that was un-called for, i never said u werent skilled..i was just mentioniong stuff..yah?
yeah, I'm back from a 3 week holiday and my fingers hurt like hell after playing my bass for a couple of hours, DAMN! I gotta get used to it again.
ohyeah, about anesthesia, the "storm" kinda part before the drums is the shitty-est part... the beginning is easy and the second part is also pretty easy, when the drums come in its hard to hear on the cd if your playing it right, but I got there...
I used a boss odb3 bassoverdrive and a morley wah... I also used a compressor but you don't really need it for anesthesia.
ohyeah, it's good to be back on metaltabs after 3 weeks of holiday!!

G|---------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------|

etc etc..

yeah i figured it out on the guitar, cuz i dont have a bass, but its still an awesome riff.
Tattered
2002-08-18, 13:33
sweet could u send it to me (PM) cos i dont know if the one i have is the correct one or the same version as yours?...
I played it for a guitarschool show, a long time ago, on bass, the riff is almost
E|---0-0-0----0-0-0-0-3-0-5--| repeat x2
but, the really correct version should be,
E|---0-0-0----0-0-0-0-3-0-5--5-3--0-0-0----0-0-0-0-3-0-5
the 5-3 is played is played fast/bluntly, uhm, ah well, play it and you'll hear it!

Stu Hamm shit is cool to play on bass though, ever heard of that fucker?
Tattered
2002-08-20, 11:02
no i havent, who is he?
he's one of the worlds most talented bassist, in the line of Doug Wimblish and Gary Willis and Pastorius....
check www.tabcrawler.com for tabs, go to bass/s/stu_ham or something...
these tabs are fun and take a lot of pratice (well most of them..)
check him out, it's worth the effort!
walpurgis
2002-08-20, 12:48
Stu Hamm kicks fucking ass! He's Satriani's bass player but also does solo stuff.
If you want to hear an amazing solo of his download a track called Bass Solo off of Satriani's Live in San Francisco album.

a cool riff is "dope sick girl" by rancid, good use of scales, and if you play the "slaughter of the soul" guitar verse riff on bass , you'll get addicted
yeah, rancid has some pretty neat bass riffs, but Operation Ivy (former rancid) has even neater bass riffs, but it's difficult to find Operation Ivy basstabs.
but the coolest stuff to play is still the virtuoso shit.. like stu hamm, gary willis, pastorius, john myung, and the guy from "Sade"
Tattered
2002-08-26, 11:16
Yeah i can play most of rancids stuff, but im still working on the ''Maxwell Murder'' bass solo, its fucking hard, and the riff from ''Journey to the end Of the east bay'' is cool

NIN's Into The Void, Piggy and Suck are pretty cool, plus their easy to learn and fun to play. Same goes for Manson's Tourniquet, The Reflecting God and President Dead, again all pretty stuff, but it still sounds cool. Some other riffs that sound awesome are Outshined, and Somewhere by Soundgarden, as well as Calm Like A Bomb by RATM, Difficult to learn at first but after a while it's easy to play. Mudvayne's Death Blooms has alot of cool riffs in it, Tool's Pushit and Schism are awesome but alas I do not have the proper distortions to pull off some the parts to them.
yeah, basically all the ratm riffs are cool on bass... especially the old stuff from the self titled, like bombtrack etc.. the evil empire cd is also pretty fun to play but the battle of LA cd is too easy...
however, the "renegades" cd is really cool! (especially I'm housin and how could I just kill a man)
Tattered
2002-09-02, 12:47
Im not really a big fan of RATM but ''Bullet in the head'' has got a cool bass intro riff:D
seabasacidtrip
2002-09-02, 13:02
yeah that's a cool song, I find the first album to have the coolest bass riffs on it as oppose to their other stuff, especially Take The Power Back that's probably one of my favorite songs of that album wicked bass, I have yet to master it, I can play the first riff off of it but I thinking of building up my skills a bit more b4 I try to take it on again.
rehearsal rehearsal, rehearsal!
timmy C's stuff is all in the same style, well kinda.
just find all the tabs you can get and master every song, that's what I've did and I can play along with any song without the tabs now. but sometimes I forget something ;)
ehhe, but it's not all too difficult to play but the riffs are always catchy and funky, so it stays fun to play!

what song are you on about dude? a RATM song?
about all the cool songs on the oldest and newest cd...
but it's hard to explain, not all songs are cool..
buuuut, if you want, I can pick my favorites for you.. they are not to easy to play and not really to hard, so it stays fun to play them...

timmy c is a badass, too bad they broke up
another fun song to play is dazed and confused by led zeppelin, i can't get the solo down though, hard as a motherfucker
another easy but cool song is money by pink floyd
hey I know that zepplin song, it's pretty cool
ehm, rage against the machine didn't broke up, they continued with that chris cornell dude and made one cd with that guy, after that the fucker left and now they're still searching for another vocalist.
it's not gonna sound like ra/tm anymore, that's for sure.

Yeah heres the Intro riff for Around the world by the chili's the hammer on pluck is quite hard to master, if you havent used that in any piece of music yet
G|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--12h14-14-12h14-14-12h14-14-12h14-12------------------|
A|-----------------------------------------------------14-13-12-10--|
E|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
and then the second riff goes
G|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
|D|-12h14-14-12h14-14-12h14-14-12---------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------14-13-12-10----------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------12-10-|
check it out!
around the world isn't that hard, only the part where the bass plays the intro again in the middle of the song, where it goes even faster, that's the hard part.
the verse is also pretty cool, it sounds really funky.
I had to play it for music school when the cd came out, pretty neat :D
but now everybody can play it :(
the speed is the only big difficulty in this song though, if you want a challenge, seach for stu hamm shit.

anathesia is wicked. i'm not a bass player, but i do like to fuck around with it once and a while. my friend left his bass at my house one day and i tried to learn it. i got the first little part down, but before i could get the rest of it, he took back his bass. damn.
i also think the intro to g'n'r's sweet child o mine is a cool riff to play, on bass, not so much on guitar though. i think it kinda sounds gay on the guitar.
more things sound gay on guitar :D

if you can play this song using your fingers, you rule!!!!!!!
Amazing punk song, very hard bass intro and solo, i have been picking with my fingers for about 6 months flat, and havent used a pick, but this song is so cool, i wanna pick up the plectrum again to learn this. As the bassist uses a plec, to get the cool clinky sound, can anyone tip me on how to get some plectrum speed?
Like exercises, and stuff..cheers

The first thing is, to get a good bass plec. Years ago there were real bass-plecs, but nowadays it's hard to get them.
So take a thick one.
technique: Just turn your wrist and not your whole arm. I f you do it this way it is easy to gain speed.

i did used heavy pics..but have moved to light because it seemed that the heavy pics were messing up my strings.

The plecs were quite huge and were covered with filth (?).

You don't need to misuse your strings. ;) Just hardly touching them is enough on an e-bass.

At the end of Savatage's 24 Hours A Day there's a very very cool riff...sounds divine....I love it...the only problem is my fretting hand gets really tired after 1 minute of continous playing of this riff :bawling:
Crass' I Know There's Love uses it's bass riffs really groovy, and cool.
It isn't that hard to play, but it has recognizable technical parts.

No problem, and it is a damn good song, I'm just not sure how good of a bassline it has, per se. I don't remember a lot of Metallica's bass lines standing out too much, aside from Orion and a couple others.
The intro has a technical feel to it, providing the oppurtunity to show the higher notes, the follow up has a good eighth note steady rythm, and the verse and chorus riffs leave room for improvisation. One of my favorite songs to play. Cliff is bass god!

Yeah, it's a nice song but I don't think the bass is that special, I started playing a lot of pantera shit lately, and they actually have killer bass lines (check 5 minutes alone! etc...) Orion has some cool bass stuff, but it's one of the only songs where the bass stands out, which sucks, after cliff died the bass parts got less cool if you ask me, I did never like jason that much.

Yeah, I agree, the live solo's on the live shit binge and purge (or something like that) video where pretty neat, but still it sounded a bit more like guitar shit played on a guitar, Cliff allways kept the funky-ness of the bass in it in a way.

About 25, they're releasing their next one soon. They are original proggy kind of metal/rock. If you get some of their albums get the earlier stuff such as '2112', 'Permanent waves', 'Moving pictures' and 'All the Worlds a Stage' is a cool live album. Some of their stuff is dodgy so you may not like it but keep listening and if all goes well you'll have a new bassist to look up to:cool:

Anesthesia by metallica definately is the best bass riff. i need to give props though.
in the words of tattered "its just it gets harder when the drums enter, on the last part of the solo..but through pain and agony im gonna finish it no-matter what" you are f*ckin awesome if u can play Anesthesia all the way through. i just started tryin today, and i can play all the individual parts, but it is really hard to do all together. and you definately need a metronome to play it.

Alot of the bass riffs on Steve Vai's Freak Show Excess, and alot of Atheist riffs- especially the peaceful bass interlude on their song Mother Man (with the birds in the background) and Cryptopsy's Orgiastic Disembowelment
Aye, Atheist had an ace bassist. Also, the guy from Pavor
