View Full Version : Metaltabs on IRC

an idea that popped into my head just now, since I'm an IRC n3rd. Perhaps, a Metaltabs IRC channel could be created? We could chat in real-time there, an alternative to sharing files via FTP, make e-love, etc. The OP's could be the same people who run the show around here. How many people here use IRC anyway? How many would be WILLING to use IRC and would frequent a Metaltabs room, if created? I have just recently setup a room on an Australian IRC server (austnet) for another forum I mod that has far fewer people on it, that was a stunning success, surprisingly.
It could work out well. Suggestions? Yes? No? Maybe?

For the people that have no idea what I'm on about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC - Explanation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirc - This is the most widely used IRC client for Windows. I suggest you use this, I'll write up a guide on how to set it up and access the room once we have a few more people's opinions - and I'll wait until Alex gives it the go ahead, as it is his site.

Does that mean I can use DC++?

What? No...
Look. I'll show you a basic screenshot of what it is. This is me, using a client called mIRC to connect to IRC. This is my friends channel, or room if you will, on a server called austnet. Rather empty as you can see, as it is 4.30 in the morning. There is a lot more to it than just chat, you can setup scripts that allow you to access other peoples files so you can download off them, rather like DC++ as you mentioned. But in no way can DC++ be used with this, if that is what you're asking.

oh ok, I get it. Ya I'm down with file sharing, I got like 200 gigs worth of music so I'm always up for more.
Sounds like a plan, i'm up for it :)
sounds fun, I would kick virtual ass.
I don't have too much time for chatting these days but I would visit once a week somewhere in the late evening. probably shitfaced. as long as you get me a ban button to go with that chat thingy, I'll use it.
I'de have to install that irc crap first though :)

I use mIRC all the time. I'll swing by and chat/share/idle. What's also cool is you can get scripts for mIRC and dress it all up, make it look badass. Plus, you can code in your client and customize it like hell. I used to run a warez channel on dalnet for years. mIRC is some fun shit.

Cool. I don't use IRC so - and didn't we try this with soulseek?

Sure can.
Dylan: Yeah, we tried it with Soulseek. It worked for a little, but Soulseek doesn't give you much to work with chat room wise.

Why would it not? IRC is a lot more convenient to use than slsk. For the people that use it currently (the general IRC population leave their clients open 24/7), all they have to do is open a new server window and join the channel. slsk has second-rate chat rooms & functionality. Stop being so pessimistic.
Might be cool, or it could be queer bait, we'll see.

Meh, I don't really care. If it does get set up though, I might join.
If there was a chatroom, then no one would come to the forum.

not true at all, i talk to almost everyone on here on aim. first of all, not everyone would go to the chat. people would forget to go on. people can post iwthin five minut and be done where as a chats more involved so people would chose posting over that

Haha, my Grandma got a computer a few years back and my dad made me go over and teach her how to use it. I was telling her how you move the mouse up to make the arrow go up and she was literally lifting the mouse up off the desk.
IRC is cool. I used to be an IRC junkie, on mIRC 24/7. Now I just hop on occasionally with Opera's IRC client. BTW, any progress?

No progress, still waiting.

Sorry, I looked this one over. I don't mind if you open an IRC channel. I'm not using chats myself, "but it depends what flicks your switch, and the light is on and burning brightly for the masses" © :)

Cheers Alex. I'll get right on it.
I don't use Mirc anymore, but it's a good idea for the community. You could also install a chat hack on vBulletin here, but I think it would eat up more resources ...

Fuck the chat hack, you gimp. I'll set up this channel when I get my computer from my old house.
