My first improvisation recording

Wooooo. About 6 weeks ago I realised I couldn't improvise whatsoever. It was poorly played, sloppy, and most of the times the same lick. I've put time in every now and then to just sit and imrpovise over some excessively cliché backing tracks. Here's the first imrpovising I've recorded, the backing is from racer X's Y.R.O. (Yngwei Rip Off... Mine's Yngwie Rip Off Rip Off)NB I'm not trying to play the song, just it made a nice basis on which to play.



Shitty sound and tone sorry, my bastarding 5150 really doesn't like effect pedals unless they're through a loop... Being a poor bastard I need another cable. Gah.

It's not brilliant, but it's definately shown me how much putting a bit of time in can soon make a huge improvement in both tecnical and creative aspects, so I recomend anyone who wants to know how to imrpovise to try this. Hopefully this thread can inspire one person or something. Getguitar pro and mute the lead stuff for example.

Most is in C# Harmonic minor (my axe is tuned to C#... never got a feel for E). My next goal is to try out riffs with key changes and stuff. Cheers for any feedback

You need to stay in key. Learn about that first, that will make your improv's correct 100% of the time, you wont have sour notes, etc.

Ooops sorry I forgot to add that, a couple fo slip ups and shit picking the right notes... It's really obvious with a lot of the higher bends. I appreciate that though! A few weeks back it was absolutely horrendous with that problem, but it's definately something I need to work on.

No problem man, and i wasnt trying to be blunt or rude saying that, i just know i rather have people honestly critque my work than just being like yeah thats fine. There were some catchy parts to it, and a few of the runs were nice though.

Yeah I totally understand, it's also something I'm very aware of but never really make an issue to set it right. It makes me cringe when I hear my playing and there's a big ol' nasty out of key bend, a lot of the time it's a bend of fret 22 instead of 23 or 24 etc. I need to work on the smoothness of hand transitions between lower areas then high notes, and to start paying attention to little aspects like which note I'm hitting and how far it's being bent etc:P

and like you said, be more precise with your bends, it seems like you're not pressing them 'up' enough, I usually bend with my pinky so I can use the rest of the fingers to play and add force to the bend. Bending up higher notes can be a bitch and takes a lot of practise to get that down perfectly.

Pretty good, sound quality was bad on my PC, had to turn the volume up to 7 to even hear it, but that's probably just me. Sounds pretty good except for those few minor things already mentioned, how long have you been playing? Sounds a little like some of the stuff Batio played at an in-store clinic in NYC last year that I was lucky enough to be in town for. Keep at it, good work so far.

Chers for the comments:) Yeah the tone does suck and it is way too quiet... Think I need a new microphone, the one I currently have is a free one from my brother but it's really unresponsive, and with 'microphone boost' in the sound options (XP) it just hisses like a motherfucker. The tone is sterile though, no effects at all as my pedal won't work with it, not to mention my guitar (Maverick F-1) is having it's bimonthly bustup, where the jack input has become loose and needs wiring up tightly again. It's a pain in the arse as it often means the gain just randomly cuts out and the pickup signal becomes very weak, but it didn't happen in the recording.

Will have been playing for four years soon. Had to take my third year out of playing though due to really bad RSI. I played too much back in the early days as well as internet abuse, and as a result my left hand randomly comes out of joint, so does the elbow. A neatparty trick though. It resulted in many X-rays and doctors appointments as it got to the point where I couldn'tsit in classes without my joints wrecking. Some shit about poor cartilage and tendon formation around the joints, but my granny had something like that so I guess I'm destined to become a select species of vegetable with time. I actually got into the ':stoned:' as a way of dealing with RSI pains etc, but eventually juststopped entirely. Took up guitar again last Christmas or so and the problem still exists but I've learnt to cope with it.

I'm glad for those comments, as they're thigns I'd noticed but just didn't consider them signifigant enough to work on. Thanks guys :beer:

Cheers! Still a lot to work on though. I have a maverick F-1. I'd strongly recomend you to trythem, especially as I notice you like jackson guitars. Just make sure it's one of the newer models as the older ones (whichI have) have relatively bad wiring and trem systems. The newer model saw a lot of amendments to the first model's problems, but it I don't think it was released when I got mine.
