What's the deal with there vocals? I'm curious as to how he makes his voice like that. Does he use distortion? It sounds awesome and was always something I wanted to try. Help?

I'm not sure if he uses distortion effects. From watching him sing, I think the way he does it is hold the mic so close to his mouth that a lot of static/breath gets in there and distorts it. Just turn the mic level down some, and scream high with the microphone practically in your mouth. That usually gives off that effect.
As far as how to get the high-pitched shit...I have no idea. If you don't mind the sting, I'd recommend testicular clamps. But they can be quite uncomfortable and cost approximately 60% of your manhood.
Anywho, that's all I can think of to help. There's been at least one other thread about JR's vocals, and it got flamed then closed. Hope this one can remain open and you don't get your balls smashed by Mr. Rezendes. Or even worse, FarBeyondSane (the most lethal of all ball-smashers), TheDoctor (closing power for this forum), Def (eh, he's somewhat of a softy lately), or Andrewc's angry ghost! *shimbolla trembles in fear*

From what I've heard off Terrifyer I'd say he uses distortion. Haven't heard anything from any other albums though...

its hollering and distortion. without a doubt, cheap lousy thin distortion. but i saw a video of him playing a song without a mic and he did OK
Take a look at the pig destroyer website, there's a video of him, and the mic breaks and he just continues screaming, i'd hate to be that guys vocals chords, lol i think he lost his voice at the end of their last uk tour or somethin

As with, well, all metal singers?
EDIT: sorry i forgot teh growlzorz
I used to like that song Dark Sattelites

JR's voice is more prominently distorted on Terrifyer. He uses several effects for his vocals such as reverb and delay (1st scream of Scatology Homework, Strangled With A Halo) and phaser (Body Scout), as well as lots of wierd shit on Tickets To The Car Crash.
JR doesn't just scream but also does some throaty growls in many songs (Deflower, Flag Burner, Heart And Crossbones for a few examples)
A few song suggestions include:
Flesh Upon Gear
Mapplethrope Grey
Naked Trees
and of coarse Piss Angel

I don't know.... But the idea of effects on vocals(other than echo) sounds a bit gay to me.
Any way havent heard that band and dont know what you people think bout fx on vocals.

I love real vocals. Only some goregrind I like has completely fake vocals.
He does use distortion, and what he does on some songs is he'll have the vocals panned and copied with one side set slightly off, or two different vocal tracks (although same lyrics) panned. It makes it sound more "full".
I saw PD live awhile back and he didn't have any effect on his voice. He didn't sound distorted like he normally does - although I have seen videos where he does. Possibly the venue.
I don't think distortion should be considered bad. All it does is give an extra "edge" to the sound.
