The game series were called Ninja Gaiden. HARD. I could NEVER beat them as a kid, even though I might try them again in a bit. Just switched from Silver Surfer to Karnov right now, by the way.

- Ghosts n Goblins
I got strokes playing that as a child on NES...upper levels were very hard.
However I kicked ass on Sega Mortal Kombat & SNES MK2 when I was 10ish

Operation Wolf and Ultimate Air Combat, both for NES. I loved both of those games and would play despite the fact that I knew I wouldn't win.

Is Ghosts and Goblins the game where you are a knight and start out fighting a bunch of ghouls in a cemetary or something? If I remember correctly, there was a part where you had to fight some bosses inside of a body, near the heart. I never beat that game.
This is funny, because I was looking at my Super NES games today and thinking how easy contemporary games are. Particularly, I found those games where you are in a spaceship or something and moving up, down, and across the screen while the screen moves ever forward to always be pretty hard.

yea those were a bitch once you got to higher levels. same with those games where you have to guard the towns from these 'missles' coming towards them by blowing up the missles in the air. easy at first till you get to the higher levels then its damn near immpossable

Believe it or not, I DID beat Morrowind. I played for enough hours to fill up a few days in total, until I finally said, "Hey, I should try beating it."
The only thing is, I used cheats :p I SWEAR IT'S IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT CHEATING! Therfore, Morrowind is the hardest game(In my opinion) EVER created. Fun game, but damn... Bethesda... please touch it up a little.
Well, anybody getting XBox 360? Oblivion(the sequel to Morrowind) is coming out on it, and I bet it will be just as hard.
EDIT: Err... nobody cares, but it's actually not the sequel, just the fourth game of the Elder Scrolls series...

but seriously, those are hard as fuck. Hard games are better if you like "replay" value. I thought zelda two, links adventure was challenging. I beat it, 12 years after I first played it. 8-bit nintendo rules over any 128 bit snowboarding wank factory game. I hate new video games, so gay.

I would have never beaten Dracula The Last Sanctuary if it weren't for the walk-through cheat codes. It would've been practically impossible. Same goes for Sanitarium. Sanitarium is one awesome game -- I've played it through and beat it twice already. But without cheats it'd take quite a while.
(I have PC, no consols) :(
Playing Doom in Nightmare mode is fucking insane.
Damn straight....Also I found Quake II nightmare mode quite an adrenaline rush.
I played it so much....I'd often dream about it.
At the end though...I could walk through subtly and waste everything there....but that's simply from repetition and efficient game play.

Yeah, I got so confused while playing it. You need a guide of some sort. But now, since I beat it, I'll never play it again. My character is so powerful, that I can use the weapons you get at the end to increase all my stats as high as I want, and then just kill people. No where near as fun as GTA.
That reminds me, getting 100% in any of the last three GTA games would be really hard. I'd NEVER have the time for that.

So true. These days everything is about graphics and realism, fuck gameplay. The morons who make these games don't realize that if people wanted reality, they could just walk outside.
One game I could never beat was WWF Smackdown, one of 'em, don't know exactly which one, since there's like 15 of 'em out now. I think first or second one.
That shit was hard, annoying, and fucking stupid. I skipped school one day just to play that shit, and man, was that a stupid fucking ddecision. I spent like six fucking hours being the no. 1 contender for the heavyweight title, and never got a title shot, only to lose it all in a stupid exibition match. That game gave me such a headache, I wanted to break everything around me.
On a side note, has anyone played Fight Club? I played it the other night, and it had some pretty cool stuff, but it got old and boring really quick. I do like the slow motion close ups of bones breaking, though, that was pretty brutal. They give you like an X-ray vision type of view. That was cool and original.

i strongly disagree. i love my old NES, SNES and Megadrive like every other gamer but, just to give an example, GTA: San Andreas is more fun to play than 90% of all games ever released on those systems.
by visiting some gaming sites, i realize it's becoming a trend to "hate" new games just because they don't have simplistic graphics and primitive gameplay.
but on-topic, i've never crossed paths with any game i would consider hard and i always do my best to finish them. if i get really stuck for more than 2 or 3 days, i simply go to GameFaqs to find the solution.

I have postal 2. It's a fun game to play but there's a point you can't master. I still can't now and i have that game for like a year now :p. Plus it runs on the unreal 2 engine so graphic wise it's very different from postal 1.

I see my brother and sister play it all the time. I always thought it was an open ended game. The little hymns that the villagers would chant and pound cracked me up.

ive been struggling with mrs. pacman, i can only get to the blue screen
i swear around the early 90's nintendo games were made to be impossible to beat unless you knew the codes and still it was tough, i think it had to do with code books being an additional sell, more money for them. one day i'll buy super-nintendo, its the best 2 dimensional graphic game console, i cant hang with the 3d games and the new consoles<with the exception of grand theft auto> especially if they come with a 300 page book and take 2 years to beat
theres a flea market below where i live that sells arkaniod 2, the arcade game, 200$, its been there for 3 years and i want it, i always wanted to own atari-era arcade games

You have a point about the GTA series games. Every one of 'em, including the first one were very fun to play. Bloodshed, violence, and mayhem just never get old. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with good graphics, and I am certainly following no trend. Hell, the only gaming site I go to is ign.com, and the only reason I go there is for cheats. I don't really know what is popular and what isn't in the world of video games today.
Soul Calibur 2 was a very sweet looking game, and very fun to play. I spent countless hours playing it. Halo and Halo 2, as well. However, many fighting games today, I just can't get into them. I still have to come across a game that can offer the fast paced badass gameplay of Mortal Kombat 3. Man, I've spent nights upon nights playing that game with my friends and it never fucking got old. I think MK3 was the pinacle of the Mortal Kombat series.

Oh its WAY too much in one game... when you get to a certain point in the game and explored a cretain amount of the map, it takes like a full hour to load... and no ive never beaten it... that ritual leader for the Ashlanders told me to find the "Cavern of the Incarnate" that would only appear at 6 or 7 am and pm in this certain chasm with big pointed teeth-like rocks... i wondered around for like, 4 hours everyday for a week trying to find it but i couldnt so i just gave up and never picked the game up since... sad really, it was a good game...
another game i never beat was Bloodwake... i got to the last mission no problem, but then i beat my evil brother and my gay ass defected XBox frose on me... it still does that everytime...
another was Halo 2 on lengendary mode... ouch... tough shit
especially with a partner cause if one of you dies then you lose the mission... brings a new meaning to cooperative... we used to be able to have one of us hid behind a big box or something and shoot the hell oput of then then revive him by going in a door or in a past room, it never failed ;)

That bit was an absolute PAIN IN THE ASS. Maybe thats becasue they can release it quickly, only encompassing the low end stuff, and then build on it over time (paying their nerdy level designers with the money from the monthly access fee) so by the time it is shiped, there is already a 10mb patch that has the next 10 character levels worth of stuff on it. Its a decent marketing thing - though personally I don't think much of the monthly access fee that you would have to pay to play.
I've never beaten Ruby Weapon on FF7...75+ hours into it, only side quest I can't beat. That and the Excalibur 2 sidequest on FF9...beat the game in 2 hours my ass...

Zelda 2 - Links adventure: This game just had really stiff controls. Link was ridiculously hard to control and the enemies just sucked. For some reason I played this game alot and eventually beat it.
Castlevania - The original Castlevania...damn, Death was fucking tough in this game, and Dracula's final transformation was not very impressive. He looked like an evil Michelin man.
Ghouls and Goblins - I think that's what that game was called. Anyways, this game was hard for the sake of being impossible to beat. It just kind of sucked, it was the kind of game that made you want to piss all over your nintendo, then light it on fire.

i got a theory that since nintendo cornered the market for a while the companies allowed to make the games started producing completely unbeatable, shitty games that solely relied on you getting the dumb magazines that told you the cheat codes, then still you couldnt beat them. it kinda sucks looking back at the hours wasted on some of that shit. huge corporations orchestrating a cabal on the average 12 year old to buy more shit after he gets the game. i guess its the same nowadays, but the newer systems games actually seem interesting and somewhat beatable. i got some super nes and nes games on the computer tho, some of them rule

Hands down Silver Surfer for me. I am attempting to beat the first level right now. Other games that killed me were...
- Ghosts n Goblins
- Trojan
- Time Lord
- Battletoads
- Last boss car on Ridge Racer
I beat GnG years ago as a kid. Maybe I'm thinking of a different game, though. Videogames don't challenge me like they used to. I'm content with a great storyline, and some good action (Grand Theft Auto, MGS, etc.). The last game that I remember giving me a problem (as a kid, that is) is this Sega game B.O.B. Loved it, but I couldn't get that far in it.
I keep meaning to dig up the game Shadowrun, but I can't find it incredibly cheap and working.

I personally thought Halo 2 legendary was WAY harder than Halo 3 legendary. I think in Halo 3 they just decided to increase the number of difficult enemies (brutes) in any one area. Great game though BTW, took me about 8 hours (solid) to beat.

I'm playing Ninja Gaiden Xbox now... it is pretty difficult in that you must fight fluidly and efficiently in every single fight, or you will lose a lot of health. There are no weak enemies besides maybe the bats, no fights where you can take a breather and hammer some buttons for awhile. Also sometimes there's a couple of tricky segments or boss battles without an intermittent save point. I don't like backtracking to save after a battle, why not have some autosaves or something. I believe the boss Doku is right after an annoying platform segment, so instead of fighting him well I just spammed fireballs and junk, chugging on those potions. I got no skills...

I have the original 3 games (on my NES emulator i mean).. I would like to unlock that on xbox though. But hell.. maybe on a TV it would be easier for me to play.

im at the end of ninja gaiden... a long series of tough fights interspersed with runs through ghost fish, with no more Murasama stores. Then a save point, then 3 straight boss fights, then a save point, then the insane final bosses, with no chance to buy items again. I want potions :(
edit: i've just learned that there is another boss at the end, jeez. I've also learned that you can backtrack all the way to the previous item shop, so I guess i'm going to have to do that if I want to survive.
edit 2: that worked well... with a full supply of items, the end wasn't so bad. Now I replay, and try out some different weapons... I can't believe I never used the nunchaku or Vigoorian Flail, those are pretty badass.. i'm not much for ridiculous big swords though.
