I haven't encountered many death bands that I don't like.
Six Feet Under seems to be a popular one to hate. Yet I find them to be alright. They just aren't purely death metal.
Mortician is a favorite of mine. Some say they're "too brutal". Others say they're "untalented". I can agree they are pretty brutal (yet in a good way) and somewhat untalented. But it's not about the technical shit. They just kick ass with extremely heavy music. Although I must say, at times, my musical skills may be stupified by their music. Still, I love 'em.
If a band is truly a death metal band and not just posers who steal the name, then I think I can enjoy them one way or another.
My conclusive answer: I don't know.

I don't particuarly care for Incantation either - though admittedly I have not listened to them all that much. Afet hering lots about how fantastic they are I downloaded their last album to check them out.

As bad as all the bands mentioned are, we haven't even scratched the surface of atrocious death metal. The worst dm bands are so bad they'd be booed off the stage at a Mortician show. They're so bad that I'd rather be locked up in a room continually playing Graveyard Classics II rather than listen to a single song by them. Death metal seems to be as capable of execrable bands as of fantastic ones.

As someone said on some other board, on every album they put 1 or 2 extremely good songs, and the rest is +/-(it gets repetitive and annoying)... but because of these good songs I wouldn't consider it a BAD death metal band. Someone should define what is BAD death metal...

think of Cenotaph (Turk) a bunch of armenian and turkish decent people spazzing out.. Alot of their stuff is blast/stop/blast/stop/breakdown/blast/stop.. Their songs do get very repititive but their guitar riffs are technical as fuck. Check them out.. Cool guys, I met them in armenia when they were on vacation.

The most 'mainstream' death metal band is easily Cannibal Corpse. They've been featured in more than one movie directed at a general rather than niche audience and they're the only death metal band whose entire catalogue of CDs I owned were lent out to non-metal-listening friends in high school. They were also the only death metal band I can recall being targeted by the PMRC and similar morality police, and the only death metal band ever to debut in the Billboard top 200. Since Cannibal Corpse are about as metal and accessible as a steel door, welded shut, we can now conclude that 'mainstream' means very little and agree to shut the fuck up and stop bandying the word about unless in a non-serious context.

Morbid Angel's Heretic was 80% boring, but now that they have Vincent again I'm hopeful of what the next stuff will sound like. Gateways was kind of boring but not as bad as Heretic, and I never liked Domination cuz it was too slow. Everything else they've done rules though.

Oh yeah, and Six Feet Under suck ass. Christ Denied are a side-project from Avulsed. Really bad stuff but it's funny as hell.
