I am sure everyone has seen Zakk Wylde play.... In Guitar World magazine, he mentions some, uh for lack of better word, tricks he does (fake trem stuff, crossing his arms and doing weird shit) that look bad as hell... I know that is just him trying to hurt my feelings by doing that shit in the first place, but do any of yall do anything like that?

i do the technique mr vai practically invented
when i do a whole bunch of hammer on's with my left hand and
put my right hand holding the neck and all that does is mute the strings
so you dont get any horrible buzzing or any feedback
which makes the notes more clearer so i wouldnt class it as showing off
but when you see vai do it it looks like he is.

Kinda funny how Zakk said he hates all that whammy and trickery stuff, and he goes and gets a guitar with a Floyd Rose and does a video of him doing all that stuff . :p

I play alot of my solos inverted. I spent hours, upon hours, upon months practicing and perfecting inverted solos and sweeps. I can now do them like it is nothing. I like playing overhand for alot of riffs too, just to show off. Pure showboating. It is not like "look how good I am!" it is more like "look how much I fucking love the guitar!"

I show off a bit when playing For Whom The Bell Tolls. I play rhythm and by friend plays lead. There are a bunch of breaks or pauses for the lack of a better word in that song, so I'll do the metal horns with my right hand and then continue playing. I also fill in the gaps with a bunch of palm muted E notes.
However, I've never really played this song in front of anybody else but my guitarist friend, so you can't really call that showing off, per se. And it's impossible for me to show off in front of this guy considering he practically taught me how to play the guitar and knows exactly just how bad I suck.
Headbanging while you play works too.
And of course, there's always Angus Young with the duck walk and spinning on his back while playing a ripping solo. He's got to be the most animated guitar player I've ever seen. I also heard of this one guy who was playing a small club, and he had a wireless guitar rig. Like I said, he was playing some small club, and there was a Dunkin Donuts across the street. This dude walked out, went to Dunkin Donuts, bought a donut, and came back eating it, all while still playing. My guitar teacher told me this story. He was there.

If I really feel like being a show-off wanker I play Michael Angelo's over-under shit or just do runs whilst playing over the neck.

If find the first half of Chris Impellitteri's Spanish Fire main melody the best opportunity to do over-under.

i've done that before, just not from disney world cuz im poor. anyways u need to file it down a bit other wise everything will come out like natural and artifical harmonics. besides its looks cool if u have every thing filed and leave "in god we trust." another fun trick to do is play with ur teeth.

During last Christmas season, Wal Mart started selling the "First Act" guitars, and the employees set up a public display so that kids could come and experience the power of rock 'n' roll under parental supervision. I, of course, grabbed one of the guitars and you know what happened after that. In James Dio voice : "Do you kids wanna rock!? I can't hear you !"

I have no specific moves.....but suppose I could always use my ASSets to show off a little....

Oh man...you are so correct about that.
Our local mega super levithan Wal-Mart has all of those "First Act" cheapy guitars up front.....I always stop and throw a little Type O into the store and get dirty and approving looks. But I never can get that Metal crunch going as the crappy amp have no ass behind them......I could bring my Boss distortion pedal I suppose....heh

Of course, most of the show-off shit just makes you look like an ass. I love Vai and all but show-off's are show-off's no matter how good. I do a little bit of the palm muting with the pick hand or I just basically "hand capo" it to do certain hammer-ons and pull-offs. Other than that people consider pitch harmonics as show-off things and I'm sure plenty of you do those. Other than that sometimes I refuse to use my pickhand. . . I just do complete hammer-ons throughout a piece. Behind the neck bends, playing with the guitar body behind your head. . . laying on the ground and spinning on your back. I do shit like that when I'm totally plastered, it's kind of entertaining to make an ass of yourself on stage. Other than that, pick scrapes classify. Tremolo arms aren't really my thing any more but when I had one I loved to do dive bombs then pull it up as far as I could. Switching your pick-ups mid-solo tends to throw people off occasionally. Playing amazing grace in natural harmonics. . . that will definitely impress if the people are slightly musical, not cuz its too hard. . . just neato.

I was surprised when I found out First Act makes actualy expensive guitars. . . I thought they only made crappy guitars then I bought a Guitar World or One and I say one of their guitars that looked really nice and it was like 1,500 or some shit. I'd so tape their logo if I got one 'cuz their logo is just too shitty, same as the company name.

I wouldn't say what I do is to show-off, cause the tricks I try still sound like shit when I do em. I would say when improvising, legato, taps, double taps, sweeps, pinch harmonics. It's crazy... some might say one is showing off, when another feels it's style. Look at jason becker, ... One might say his sweeps are for show-off purposes cause the man can sweep at blistering speeds, but if you ask a well enthused guitarist, they'll say the sweep gives the music it's key characteristic sound. So personally, all these "show-off" tricks to me help define the sound of the music in their context. Hrmm.. not sure if that makes a goddamn bit of sense.

Most show off with SOUND.....not "look"

Concern for a bands looks is massively retarded.
If my guitar heros wore pink leotards and all looked like Dee Snider.....I could care less.
There is no visual comming from a stereo speaker.....unless you just popped several hits of really good LSD
;)

i think showing off is important... not the visual part of it but the musical part of it... like, where would we be without Eddie Van Halen saying "look at me!" and taping, or Jimi Hendrix going "look im on acid!" and making weird bar noises?
