I was just thinking how awesome Framk Mullen (suffocation) is and how his vocals have changed over the years. Which album do you think was his best work?

Breeding the Spawn.

Even though it isn't on your list, Souls To Deny is his best vocal performance in my opinion.

hrmmm
his vocals on STD (teehee) are acutally awesome, i just noticed the other day. the only problem is that they are too loud and panned real hard into the left ear. i always thought his performance was think and weak, but its just that its so high up it sounds lame. and he still has his voice, i just saw him live and he sounded perfect
effigy was brutal but too monotonous
chris why did you like breeding the spawn? he sounds pretty hardcore on that album, and way too monotone... i dont know how youd like that performance
anyways
despise the sun is the perfect mix
i chose effigy because, despite the monotony, its fucking brutal

Breeding the Spawn.
I hope you are kidding. Breeding The Spawn had sub-Black Metal production, and the vocals were no different.

BtS producion does stand in the way a bit, but its not that bad. i just dont like the music as a whole
and the vocals are just lame, i thought

No, he's right, the production was fucking terrible. I'm looking past the production, his vox are nice on this album and sound more natural than they do on Effigy. Breeding the Spawn is probably my favorite album. It's like a child that goes unloved... his brilliance shines only to those who can look past his dirty face, matted hair, and tattered clothes. Underneath that unsightly being is raw fucking genius.

I left Breeding and Souls out because I thought they were worse than these four by a long run, but I guess you guys think different. My bad.

I couldn't say which was his best work. Then again, I never really got into Suffocation.
i think hvit lyset tar oss is frank mullen's best vocal effort to date, although aske came very close.

and chris , that was a clever post, but i still say he sounds tired and weak on BTS.i bought that album purely on yuour recommendation and cant sit through the basketball drums and kitchen sink guitar tone
edit:
ive been pondering this. BTS actually doesnt have THAT bad of production. everythigns clear enough to be enjoyed. i think the problem is that its suffocation , and so anything less than perfect dissapoints us fans
its kind of insulting to think they had to listen to that at a roadrunner release party, isnt it ?
for gods sake. it was a disappointing attempt at humour. i posted it because MTM is the most anti-burzum person i knows and will bleat at other people for liking burzum in their own threads, so i simply thought i'd get one back on him as, like i said, a poor attempt at humour.
frank and varg sound NOTHING LIKE EACH OTHER.

i dunno. they both fit their own place though
picture the vocals on the heavy part of liege (a new race...)
that fits SO well with that albums sound and riffage
then picture the vocals on devoid of truth (writhing in ...)
that fits perfectly too
frank knows how to sound, and when :P so it basically comes to the whole SOUND of suffo you prefer
i still say despise, though

Actually, no, they were rushed into recording it. The producer was a fucking idiot. Its a fact, not just sticking up for Suffocation. I like the music, but the production just kills it.

Varg is an idiot. Thats why. I don't MIND Burzum, but I just can't believe anyone is a true fan.
Here is "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss."
"AAAAAAAAHHHH. EEEH, OHHH AAAAHHHHH, YAAAAAAAAA"
Yup, thats the whole song. Plus 7 minutes of the same riff.
HOW CAN ANYONE BE ANTI-BURZUM?!?!?
i know how they can, the music just is not for them. the same problem lies with COF, the music's good but people get put off by dani filth. i for one, quite love both these bands.
"det som engang var" is one of the greatest songs of all time. not on technicality, but on atmosphere. anyway, this is a suffo thread, so i won't hijack it.

Yep. The producer had absolutely no fucking idea what he was doing. He had never produced a single metal album before, his experience was in producing jazz records. So we can thank him for the fact that the whole album is drowning in mids and it sounds like they were playing in a cardboard box. I'm sure we can also thank Roadrunner for financing this junk. I can't believe such brilliance could be so sorely neglected and overlooked.
Oh, yeah, and whoever said Pierced from Within is the perfect record, I agree with you.

Yup. I read that before I listened to the album, but after I bought it. I should've saved my money, although "Beginning of Sorrow" is a great song.

What I'd really like to know is, who the fuck was doing vocals anything like what Frank did on Effigy back in '91? Probably noone, but let me know if you can think of anyone, seriously.
I love all of Frank's vocals, but Effigy gets my vote.

Well, just a year after Effigy came out, Matti Way was doing his still insane gutterals for disgorge on the demo "Cognitive Lust Of Mutilation".
Well it ain't 1991, but I'll give you points for it.

I'm sure his vocals on Effigy were processed, I remember someone (probably Jarrod!) stating it as fact in a thread not so long back.
Effigy Of The Forgotten is, quite rightly, held in the highest of esteems and it gives the phrase 'genre defining' it's definitive meaning. You like brutal death only because Suffocation invented it. Nobody has even got close to sounding like Suffocation, they never have and they never will.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Cannibal Corpse's "Butchered at Birth" come out in 91? If so, then Chris was doing some gutteral shit back then too. Not as GOOD as Frank. I doubt anyone can hold Frank's vocals these days.
Yeah Butchered was '91. Just a year later TOTM came out and that had more gutteraler vocals.. But I dont think it really matches any Suffocation stuff.
Exactly. Barnes wasn't as nearly as brutal as Frank on the mic.

I think Matti Way is the most gutteral/brutal vocalist I've heard.
