I got their album Synergy about a year ago...I kinda like it at some points...but for the most part...I dont really think of " metal " when I hear them, but their complicated guitar work or whatever kinda reminds me of what dillinger escape plan would do...but I dont like DEP at all, but my question is, I heard their earlier work was black metal and they weren't a christian metal band in their early shit, is that true?
I dont really like this album too much. and I wouldn't go out and buy another of theirs based on what i've heard so far, but if they were black metal before I might reconsider.
The other band that was like that was Anathema, they were black and now they do Damnation-esque stuff.
bah. they're christian metal I guess.
they don't remind me of DEP at all though, they don't even come close...

bah, you're probably right, i'm talking out of my ass, lol. I can't remember the last time I heard DEP, which was a while ago.
I'm just making sure i'm not lied to again...I made two mistakes in the past listening to some idiot kid...that Nightwish was awesome death metal, and that Into Eternity was new black metal....I think someone was out to fuck me over though, i've learned to only value the opinions of people on this board and I dont go anywhere else for my info.

christian music imo always sucks
they started out playing music to spread the word of christ, not to make good metal.

Top Ten Alien: i've said it before but, I'm not too up to date with the genre's of metal...I classify everything either under Death, Gore Thrash Power and Black...which is probably not so effective, but they just get too varied for me....but as best I can guess, their older stuff was somewhere between black and doom....but you're right, probably more doom cause they have a slower more ambient feel.
As far as Extol go..Metal-wise, they are kind weak, I only like two songs on the album I bought, and normally I buy metal cd's which all the songs are awesome. thats one of the main reasons I love metal. I can buy a Korn cd, and maybe like 2 songs, but feel like i've wasted my money, but if I go andbuy something like Dechristianize, then I know every song was worth every penny, and I just sorta dont feel that way about Extol.
but like I said, is their earlier stuff any better? if anyone even knows?

and how do you know?
maybe they're just a bunch of guys who like making music? ok, so they're christian and decide to take that up in their text. a lot of metalbands do exactly the same with satanism.
jezus, people can be so fucking narrowminded.

music is music, when ti comes down to it....I didn't really know they were a christian band until my friend told me, but that didn't really change my mind or anything.
I'm happy that when the singer screams, he sounds like he is a thrash singer, and not one of those nu-metal like....fucking bands....you know, where the boner is singing clean like " Ohhhh my god a girl touched my legggg " and then some linkin park sounding dude comes in and he screams all stupid high pitched-like " I TOUCHED HIS LEGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!11 "
so thats automatic points in my book. Theres just something I can't dig about it. I think its the way the whole thing is put together as a whole, thats probably why im curious if their older stuff is any better, cause they have potential. He at least has a decent clean singing voice.

christian music doesnt "always suck", you think it sucks because you dont like the religious overtones, i have heard some pretty fuckin brutal death metal done by christians, does being a christian make them any less talented, does it mean that they cant be just as heavy, FUCK NO. you have to get past the bands religion, because you could pull the same shit with megadeth, mustaine is a christian now, does that mean he will start playing soft rock, i think not.
back on topic, i like extol, i think they have alot of potential. i do remember hearing or reading somewhere that theyre earlier stuff had more of a black metal influence in the vocals, i think.
yeah, i just found it
Formed in 1994, their style mixes black metal (more so on their early releases), melodic death, and (mainly) a highly progressive/technical nature, a style that has mutated and matured with each successive release.

I would say im a pretty good judge of metal music, and im farrr from being christian. dont just write extol off as just some bible band. I bought 'undeceived' in 2001, I didnt know anything about them, I just liked the cover, it was very metal! as musicians they are amazing! that album is heavy as fuck, very black metal at parts but much more melodic and technical. I dont care what what they believe in, I care how it sounds...thats all, and the old albums sound awesome. Christians or not, you cant say a band isnt good because of thier beliefs, Inst necrofagist Muslim? So i shouldnt listen to that too?
Haven't heard this band, but if they're christian metal, they'd have to be as good as Necrophagist before I'd accept them, and even then, I'd be frustrated at the religious overtones. Call me narrow minded, I don't give a fuck in the slightest.
religious overtones can be annoying, I agree. its about the music and not per sé about the religion. if they overdo it, I don't listen to it either because its just not my thing.
but saying 'christian music allways sucks' is just retarded.

Except alot of metal bands who include Satanism in thier theme aren't even Satanist, they just use it as a theme, Unless it's black metal though....

now that i finally know they were more blackish earlier on ( thanks to MoonRaven and 27 frets ) I will check out one of their earlier CD's. I was boarderline before, but now Im willing.
As far as their overtones go...Well, I dont actually hear much. I mean, most of the time he is using higher pitched screaming instead of clean singing, and Its hard to tell what he says unless you focus mainly on him and not the music, and the only line that I hear that even sounds christian is:
The Worship
of all creation
Seemingly endless
but it will end
and every knee shall bow
and that doesn't even seem that bad. Cause for one thing, I dont hear:
Christian god is the only god that is real ( which pisses me off to no end )
and I dont hear: You must believe what we do or you will go to hell..so other then that I couldn't care less.
I love this stuff. everybody has opinion and i like to hear them all. If your a musician and you have ears you have to respect these guys. there first album "Burial" is the best, "Undeceived" wasn't bad but quite abit more technical, and I haven't heard "Synergy". It's good to know that many of you will still listen to a band even though they claim to be christian. I am a christian and i listen to satanic bands and black metal bands and I respect them for what they do not for what they represent. For instance Broken Hope is a damn good band. There lyrics whoa! I like my music dark! Extol is a good band. All christian bands don't suck just many of them. We'll fix that! and yes they are still christians. check out Death List, there not around any longer but they were brutamus maximus!!! and christians at that. cool conversation!

Theyre good but the need a new sound. Theyve had that detuned flat production sound since they started
