Singing like Children of Bodom?

Hey guys, I am 15 years old... I play Bass, Keyboards, and I sing. Unfortuantly my clean normal vocals are not the greatest, so I decided I wanted to learn how to sing like Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom. (My Real goal is Mikael from Opeth but I find this an impossible Task).

Can someone please supply me with tips on how to sound anything REMOTLEY like Alexi, then that would be awesome.

I try to sing like him, it doesnt come out right.. and my throat hurts directly after so I know I am doing SOMTHING wrong.

i dont think you can do anything to make your voice sound any different. but no offense man but why would you want to sound like him, he sucks...

Well, Thats not exactly easy... I am kind of in a band who plays a bunch of live shows, and I am taking the vocal spot now, and I am expected to live up to it.

I just need a way to sound remotley similar.

as sir cat pointed out, Alexi sucks, so just go out there are fart into the mic. should be decently similar

Alexi's nothing special, he just has his own voice and puts it to work. If you don't sound like him, that's just too bad for you.

Just trying to get your voice sound like someone else's won't work. Try to mature your own voice instead. Thats easier and sounds better.

I dont mean sound like him as being mimicking, or itenditical tone..

I mean the sound he creates, its that scratchy kind of vocals.

Hey man, I know what you mean since I have come very close to sounding like Alexi. I'm going to bring some bad news to the table right away, Alexi Laiho uses a lot of voice mods. Among the mods are vocal compression, which most bands use anyways, i do, and some distortion (this is the case of some of the newer stuff, especialy the new album).

Yea the voice mods are apparent, trust me I did try layering two compressors, a tiny bit of distortion, and reverb of course, and I could get a similar effect to his. Obviously i didn't sound exactly like him, I have my own voice, but I could get pretty close.

My advise, don't copy him exactly, find your nich. I found it a bit hard to sing like him, since my band covers one or two Children of Bodom songs, because I have a deaper voice than him. But realy, effects that he uses on his voice do help, and I've been using some ever since I tried them, but do try to find your nich and then just go with it and make your own adjustments.

go for the mikael voice, growl from your chest and not your throat, thats how you get that deeper growl, and practice your ass off, cus after a full set, your throat will be shot if you dont
