View Full Version : How can I remove this damn subtone in my screaming voice?

Hi, I have a short question, about a problem which really goes on my nerves:
Evertime I sing to DeathMetal, with high screams like Children of Bodom or newer In Flames, I have a few subtones in my voice which really get on my nerves.
You should use much air, which comes from your diaphragm, yes? But then my voice sounds really "windy", as if I would use really much or nearly only air and it's kinda scratchy. I think I use "vocal fry" in falsetto.
And I can't scream, when I use less air, because then my voice totally throaty.
any ideas?

I doubt that. It's probably cause you didn't focus.

I have a similar problem when I try it, maybe I should wait until my voice matures 100% (I am 16 now)

That could be it. My midsy main vocal just sounded flat and undynamic today, when its supposed to be really clear and articulate.

if you sing through a mike try putting something between you and the mike so you are not litterally bretheing on it.
or you coud just not sing

Wow, nice to see, that I am not the only one who has this problem...
Thanks for you tips. Maybe it's really my age, I'm just 17...
With the windy sound, I didn't mean the sound, when you blow into mic, but that you can hear that I use much air... I GUESS it would be the same, when I say my voice is thin...
I will have to experiment a bit...
One more question about the singer of children of bodom:
I think, he doesn't use vocal fry, does he? At least, i can't hear that he uses much air... But how does he scream, then?

does it hurt your vocal chords to do? isnt it just a really low mumble type croak? because thats how i talk....

no. It's like when you get up in the morning and say something while you are really tired. Really silent but not whispering, you should feel your vocal chords vibrating

Alexi sings by hacking a loogie. A big wad of phlegm. I bet he used to have a really girly voice.
