I've noticed that, especially on Cowboys from Hell, Phil does high singing like Rob Halford (and a bit like Bruce Dickinson). Out of the two I prefer Phil because he has a wide range and I like Pantera more than Judas Priest, but it's probably not the case with alot of you. I also think that, when singing clean, Phil produces a nicer sound; he can also shout well. So who do you think is the best?

phil defenetly.
Just listen to TGSTK (album), fucking great screams with nice whiskey clean vocals.
Damn, he's my god.

I'm not into pantera much but I'd say phil too.
useless thread, phil by far
Rob..
Rob obvously influences Phil, and Phil cant sing for shit now.
His lyrics are sub par.. and he coughs up a storm after he screams...
hes just a worthless heroin addicted frontman for a band that servers no purpuse but to waits 30min of my time at ozzfest.

^yea, Phil WAS real good, but Rob is the fucking metal vocals king, alongside Bruce. And Joe Bellardini, in my opinion.

Right on. I'm pretty much anti-Pantera, so this says it all for me.

Phil's really gone to hell. I'd thought that before, then Down released their second album and he seemed to be back in form, but it sounds like he's got very little to offer anymore. Rob, on the other hand, always sounds great. He sounded great with Judas Priest, he sounded great with Fight, he sounded great with Two, he sounded great with Halford, and now he presumably sounds great with Judas Priest again. It's hard to beat the classics.
As I think about it, I'm really not sure why this is a thread. Aside from the one Pantera song with Halford on it, there's very little that invites comparison, as they have very different styles. Falsetto is not and should not be synonymous with Rob Halford. Having to choose between these is like being asked to choose between Matt Barlow and Barney Greenway.
Right on. I'm pretty much anti-Pantera, so this says it all for me.
Im talking about SJR... god they suck.
But Rob's voice was AMAZING at ozzfest. He hasent lost his touch.

Yes, I know, but if I'm anti-Pantera, naturally I'd be anti-Phil.
ive never been a priest/halford fan (due to a certain arrogant person that tried to get me into all their stuff too fast and it got quite annoying).
and phil was fantastic until reinventing (i think his new vocal attack really suited the GSTK) so he gets my vote in spite of the crap that hes putting out now with superdope ritual.
apperently I'm the only one that doesn't give a rat's ass about halford?

I'm not saying its bad, I think that guitars/drums have been better in other places, in other albums ex. Painkiller.
And if you mean vocals, I still think SFV rules.

I don't know who has the TGSTK album, but if you read through all the credits, Phil has a substitute vocalist do some of the screams. I don't have the album right next to me right now but I remember his name's Seth. However, Phil is my favorite metal vocalist, but he has gone to hell now that they've broken up.
I think some of the longer screams are seth.

Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt screams on a few songs, but he doesn't do 'substitute screams.' It's just like a guest vocalist thing. Phil guested on an Anal Cunt song too, if I recall correctly.
He also got Anal Cunt back together to tour with SJR and Morbid Angel a year or two back.
So obviously he finds humor in their music and must find Seth's scream intriguing so he had him guest on TGST

Morbid Angel toured with Superjoint Ritual and Anal Cunt? Jeeeeeesus.

And Strapping Young Lad did a couple shows as well.. a fucked up tour indeed..

ROB.
Anyone have the live Halford CD? Into the pit is the best song for the example he starts off with the deep voice: "Are you mother fuckers ready!?!?!? BECAUSE WERE GOING INTO THE FUCKING PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!", and then the highs...
And when I saw Priest live Halford puts you into a trance, when he starts singing all that goes thru your head is "MY GOD!!!".
Phil is more of a front man, never a great singer, he can write good lyrics, but the last SJR CD SUCKED! His voice sounded like a crack head being anal raped in jail, and how long has he been singing? not too long, halford has been singing for 30+ fucking years, and he still sounds great.

just opinion
cock rock vocals
rob
growling phil
singing
neither
Right on fear..
Seeing both Pantera and Priest live i can say that Halfords voice is MUCH better live than Phils. Halford is fucking amazing, hes in his 50's and he still sounds like hes in his mid 20's.

Phil Alsemo with all due respest was great on the first pantera albums was a great vocalist,.. but unfortunatley he lost his voice for bieng a dumbass and singing with his throaght. Halford is the king of metal vocals,... and he has been singing for more than 20 ye4ars and he still has a badass voice and vocal range. <<<< view the Halford recurection album

PHIL
:drunk:  :stoned:
DEFINETLY ROB. He just has one of those voices that are golden. Phil...I guess he is ok sometimes, but I cant stand it when he strains his voice.
Fucking Phil Anselmo man!!! He went from Rob Halford highs to a deeper scream, and then the rest was just brutal lows and growls that made Chris Barnes sound like a chick. Go to youtube.com and look at the Phil Anselmo & Morbid Angel video for Day of Suffering. He was so good, he sounded just like David Vincent on Domination.

Way to kick up an old one, man, but being a big Anselmo and Morbid Angel fan, I'm glad you did. Off to youtube I go.
Oh, and Anselmo if anyone cares anymore. I don't like Rob Halford.

Oh shut the hell up, you have no idea what you are talking about.
Ripper's pretty good, but mostly in a technical sense. He's got very good range. Bruce and Rob have Voices. With capital Vs. Skill without personality doesn't matter much.
Check out Phil singing parts of Victim Of Changes http://youtube.com/watch?v=OfXuHny6iWA
I think his doing it awesome even if its just a simple rehearsal from 1989.

Im gonna have to say Phil on this one. He can (or at least while he is sober) do some really aggressive singing, lighter-raising ballad vocals, and cat-in-acid shrieks. Plus he sang that one morbid angel song really well. I cant remember which one it is right now but it was on youtube. Killer shit. However, Halford still can do most of the songs form their large back catalouge. Phil sems to have lost some of his range.
I particularly care for either but no one can deny that Rob is a far superior vocalist.

I liked Anselmo back in the days [early 90's] before he decided to go for the street bum look. I saw the 'Cemetary Gates' video tonight and had to do a double-take : I was so used to seeing Anselmo with the full beard and flannels I didn't even recognize it was the same dude. He had a better voice too.
That video of the Pantera practice with Kerry King is badass.
Phil vs. Rob = pointless. Halford vs. Dickinson is a better battle. To which my vote goes with Halford all the way.

i dont really like priest... they arent very heavy to me, the falsetto thing just kinda kills the "i am man, hear me roar" mentality of metal hahahah.
phil... i quite like its vocals... but i only listen to superjoint, i really dont like pantera... For superjoint, hes clean vocals are more like yells than anything, but the screams are sooo gooooood... definately better than rob in my eyes.
I would say Rob, buts thats probably beacause im a fan of Priest.
But both singers are talented, but they're not the same style, so i think its kinda pointless to compare them...
Anyways, Rob is the king
